Groovy New Tune From Jesse Kivel

While Nathan was holding down the fort for us and keeping it straight real, I of course missed a few hits over the last week. One such jam, comes by way of the Maine based artist Jesse Kivel and his new single “Overgrown Ocean.” This think packs a big punch of soul with a heavy groove paired with some slight hints of twang and delicate pop. It’s a jam.

This track is part of a new album entitled Death at Party Rock due out on November 11th via New Feelings. Pre-orders are live now.

An Overnight Low Share Step Into the Light

The pop hits are out in full force today, that’s for sure. Maine’s An Overnight Low might have quietly sent us the nicest surprise in our pop gift bag though. They’re new EP dropped today, and the title track is a nice power-pop number to introduce you to what’s in store. Heavy riffs ring melodically, matched by vocal harmonizing, feeling like an added instrument in its own right. Honestly, this track wouldn’t be out of place on a Teenage Fanclub LP, as its got just enough stomp to keep rock fans, though definitely leaning into the group’s pop inclinations. If you’re willing to take a risk on something new, give the band’s Step Into the Light EP a listen! All of this is a tease from Holyhead, the record that we’ll tell you more about when we’re in the know!

Big Blood Deliver First Aid Kit

A family band often gets treated as if its kitschy, but I don’t think that’ll be a word anyone uses when they listen to Big Blood‘s first single from their forthcoming album. Sure, the band’s teenage daughter is rocking the vocals, but that performance alone sounds like a kid wise beyond their years; she belts out notes with such power and strength that you’d hardly harp on it had I not brought it to your attention. Just take one moment to bathe in the chorus and you’ll ultimately come to the agreement that everyone likely needs to listen to this track. It’s powerful and moving, and I can’t wait to see where the rest of their new record leads me. First Aid Kit will be released by Ba Da Bing/Feeding Tube on June 9th.

That Hideous Sound Release Wasted Life

The Internet age makes it nearly impossible to cover all the great music out there, but this new record from That Hideous Sound finally made its way over to me this past weekend. Another great group from the current Maine scene, and this one’s for all you fans of heavy riffs spun through the bedroom wash cycle. What I mean by that is you get this intimacy and recording vibe that makes it seem like its been honed and polished in solitary, though the riff works and musicianship allows every song to loom larger than life. “I Feel Better” is an obvious hit, but as I keep going through, I tend to gravitate towards the title track, “Wasted Life;” there’s something about that tune that just gets me. Wasted Life just dropped via Repeating Cloud Records, so get at it!

Weakened Friends Share Tunnels Lyric Video

With Weakened Friends new record Quitter on the horizon in a few weeks, I just can’t get enough of the band’s new single; I’m pretty sure I’m responsible for half the plays today alone. I hate to use the cliche language of timelessness, but everything about this track is just the perfect dose of pop rock, seeming like it might just be one of the best jams to come out this year. There’s something about Sonia’s delivery of her vocals that’s effortlessly distinctive; it seems biting yet somehow punches you with this melodic hook. I mean, I dare you turn away from this chorus and not fall absolutely in love. This is how all pop rock should be written. Definitely ready to be the old guy at the show full of youngsters screaming along at the top of their lungs to this jam! Quitter is out November 19th via Don Giovanni/Big Scary Monsters.

Get On the Tancred Hype Train

It seems that the hype train for Maine based artist Tancred is leaving the station so I better get on board before it’s too late. For me, it’s easy to like an artist who combines pieces of straight forward grunge rock with gritty, yet still refined vocals. Imagine if bands like Joy Formidable and Garbage blended only their best qualities equally to create a female fronted rock opus. That’s what you’ll find with this new single called “Something Else”. Seriously, what’s not to like about this?

Tancred will release new album Nightstand on June 1st via Polyvinyl.

New Music from Lady Lamb the Beekeeper

It’s that time of year when we start to get a sneak peak at how our 2013 is going to shape up, and it’s looking like a good year already.  Aly Spaltro and her project Lady Lamb the Beekeeper are definitely on my list, especially now that Ba Da Bing have announced the release of her album, Ripley Pine, which comes out on February 19th.  In a short time she’s garnered a lot of praise for her intimate performances, and her background story of a video store clerk turned songstress is sure to play into the narrative of her record.  Enjoy the sample of good things to come.
