Alt-Pop Jam From ICHIWAWA

Traditional, sort of radio ready pop music is something we have always steered clear of and leave it to the big boys to cover for the most part. Chances are, you already read about it or heard it elsewhere. Worcester, MA based ICHIWAWA delivers an alternative style of pop music that resonates with me and fits roughly into a sort of bedroom or DIY genre within the genre. The single “Slow Down, My Guy,” should serve as a great introduction to this artist with a DIY beat and hints of shoegaze and dream as well. More to come.

Ichiwawa Share Short Stories

Somewhere between the land of Elvis Depressedly and Elf Power lives the work of Ichiwawa; it’s pop music for the warped, the weird and the weary. Clearly written from a pop perspective, it’s the aesthetic approach that leaves the work left-of-center; it almost feels warped as it makes its way through your speakers, like you’ve got an unbalanced turntable. That’s party of the majesty here, however, since you can still feel that emotional connection in the vocals and the melody, despite the existence of that other-worldly warp-zone. So, if you’re game for welcoming a little weird into your pop tradition, give his new single a spin now.

Stream A New LP From Bedroom Eyes

While you’re looking for more tunes to enjoy this weekend, might I suggest this new, 9 song, full length album from Boston based group Bedroom Eyes. Having honed their craft for over 10 years now, new album Turned Away, shows a band leaning heavily into the noise of shoegaze with driving bass lines and rapidly paced drum beats. This is well worth a weekend listen. If you’re into it, consider a purchase over on bandcamp for either streaming or physical consumption.

Plane Color Share Little One

I was seeking out something that set up Friday perfectly, something that felt like summer, but still kept me on my toes, which is where I landed with this new Plane Color tune. There’s a lot of that silky guitar work on the surface, which creates this natural warm swing to it; it feels like something that would be considered Captured Tracks adjacent. Still, the thing that kept my interest piqued was those deep-throated vocals; I love the deepness and how its works when juxtaposed with the melody. Throwing a late night pool party? Try this one on your playlist!

Sailor Down Shares I Get It

Our friends over at Relief Map Records have quickly jumped into the fold with releases, announcing a new EP from Sailor Down, the project of Chloe Deeley. There’s something familiar in her songwriting, particularly on this single; I feel like that light strum is just a little voice in my head reminding me how much I love a simple pop ballad. Chloe’s voice has this distinct fragility, like it could shatter into a million melodic shards as soon as it hits your ears. It’s one of those tunes that maximizes emotions while stripping things down to their barest form…which I’m always drawn towards. She will release her Skip the Line EP on May 14th.

Yet Another Gem From Paul Bergmann

Leeds, Massachusetts based songwriter Paul Bergmann has received an enormous amount of praise on our website over the last few years. Seriously, Nathan and I love this guy’s music. After releasing his Night, Unfold EP last February, Bergmann is treating us fans with this new one off single called “Death of Me”. In simplest of terms, this song is absolutely beautiful.

A Quick Hit From Art Thieves

Those in the mood for a quick hitting, in your face punk rock number need look no further than this 1 minute track from Quincy, MA based band Art Thieves. You surely don’t want to hit the restroom or take a coffee break when hitting play or you’ll miss this short and ferocious number called “Proxies”. It’s about as punk as you can get nowadays. Looking forward to hearing more tracks as they come in.

Art Thieves will release the Russian Rats LP on September 14th via State Line Records.

New Music from Orange Blossom Flyover

Ryan Scally is the man behind Orange Blossom Flyover, a Massachusetts bedroom recording project, except the thing is, it seems to have blossomed into something much more than just a bedroom recording project, even adding some members.  Sure, Ryan’s got an infatuation with using beats, but he’s also coating those beats in buzzsaw guitars and heavily drenched vocals.  It makes for some magical blend that really stumps me for a comparison; I’m thinking throw War on Drugs in with some collection of 90s house beat samples and then politely throw in the term gaze at the end.  Whatever it is, it’s really keeping it real on my stereo right now.
