The EXBATS Announce Now Where Were We

The EXBATS are a dream for any father/daughter rock n’ roller; the band is made up of Kenny McClain and his daughter Inez, rounded out with Bobby Carlson on bass. But, I have no talent, musically, so my daughter is out of luck. Regardless, the EXBATS have just announced a new album for Goner Records, and dammit if you’re not going to fall for it in the biggest way. On the surface, you do get that sort of classic 60s sugar-pop, but beneath that, there are hints at sort of early 80s punk (thinking Blondie here), not to mention the jangles that swept overseas from Flying Nun; its a huge sound, no doubt aided by recording with Matt Rendon of the Resonars. Now Where Were We will be out on October 22nd!

Did You Know the Resonars Have a New Album

I’ve always been a big Resonars fan, as this site can surely attest. I’m a little late to this, but wanted to make sure you all knew that you can listen to an entire new album from the band fronted by Matt Rendon. I think it would be easy to lump the band with the reemergence of psychedelia over the last decade, but Disappear really offers the perfect blend of what really seems to drive Rendon’s songwriting. For me, it feels more like the pop side of the British Invasion, though I’ll admit there’s some thunderous drumming throughout the record’s entirety. This whole record is like that perfect sunny day album you and your friends horde and pass around, like the best kept secret you don’t want anyone to know about because its so entirely special. Personally, I want you to listen to it; I’ll even tell you to listen to my favorite track “You Were There!” There will be a vinyl version of this coming out in the Winter, so keep an eye, but just enjoy Disappear now!

Pleased to Meet You: The Butterscotch Cathedral

Over the last several years I’ve been fortunate enough to get into the music of The Resonars, who’ve released several great LPs. Matt Rendon is stepping away from the project to work on his new act, The Butterscotch Cathedral. It’s rumored to be Matt’s homage to the great works of the 60s, with some noting that the album might only have three exploratory tracks (whilst there seems to be some unconfirmed mentions of more than just those three tunes). One thing I’m assured of, Rendon still has his finger on the pulse of my music listening, making nostalgic nods to his own influences while still caring enough to leave some pop sensibility. Look for the s/t album from TBC on Trouble in Mind Records come October 2nd.
