Great show going down Wednesday night on the inside stage at Mohawk featuring up and coming indie band Gardens and Villa.  Opening support is also legit with Motopony and Invisible Inks both on hand for live sets.  It should be a good one.

Show Preview: Weird Weeds @ the Mohawk (7/30)

Date Saturday, July 30th
Location Mohawk
Doors 900p
Tickets $6 at the Door

Austin’s Weird Weeds have been knocking around our town for quite some time, and they’ve built up a pretty decent following.  This means you’ll be in for some good times, along with some great music at the Mohawk on Saturday evening.  Also, you have to get their early to catch one of our favorite acts Sleep Good, still riding high after the release of their latest album, Skyclimber. Lean Hounds will be the first act of the evening; another good act.  With a slew of shows going down over the weekend like Iron and Wine and Joanna Newsom, you’ll get more bang for your buck by ending up over at Mohawk.

Show Preview: Mission of Burma @ Mohawk (7/22)

Date Friday, July 22nd
Location Mohawk
Doors 800pm
Tickets $15 @ Frontgate

One of the great acts that made a musical resurgence during the 00s is Mission of Burma, and since returning to the fold, they’ve kept it going.  Their musical catalog is extremely song, and they’ve written perhaps one of the greatest songs ever in “(That’s When I Reach for My) Revolver.”  I could play that song again and again, and it’s still brilliant.  If you dig the song, and aren’t familiar with the band, a great place to start is A Gun to the Head, which is sort of a compilation. Also on the bill at Mohawk are Austinites Ume and Daniel Francis Doyle.  Should be a great place to start your evening.

One of my favorite discoveries of the year, Nashville based fuzz rockers Paperhead, are making a stop into Austin at the Mohawk tonight.  I’m willing to bet that most of you have nothing better to do on a Monday night and this is a great chance to see an up and coming band on the cheap.  Joining this promising new group on stage are local promising talent Rayon Beach.  Get out there people and discover some new tunes.

Local kids the Strange Boys are about to embark on a cross country tour this summer, but have a show at Mohawk this Friday before they head out.  Opening support is provided by Spiked Punch.  Concert goers should also stick around after the Strange Boys for an inside midnight show by Grand Champeen.  With not a whole lot of solid shows this Friday, sending our Austin friends off in style is a must.

Show Preview: Of Montreal @ The Mohawk

Date Tuesday, May 17th
Location Mohawk
Doors 630 pm
Tickets $22 from Transmission

While praise has been mixed with the last couple of Of Montreal releases, no one will ever argue that the band put on one of the most extravagant, not to mention creative, live shows.  Thus, this is where you should be on Tuesday night when the group rolls into the Mohawk.  I’m thinking that since the Mohawk has a small stage, you’ll get a little bit more of a musically focused production than some might expect, but I promise you, this is a good thing.  Opening up for the group is Painted Palms, and if that’s not enough you can stick around afterwards to catch one of our favorite local acts, One-Hundred Flowers, though we heard Kevin is DJing over at Elysium.  You’ll be happy either way.

Show Preview: Junip @ the Mohawk (5/10)

Date Tuesday, May 10th
Location Mohawk
Doors 630 pm
Tickets $12 from Transmission

Most people might not recognize the name Junip, as it hasn’t quite become a household name, but surely you’ll all recognize one of the principle songwriters in the band, Jose Gonzalez.  The Swedish group is coming to the Mohawk to support the release of their recent Fields LP, a collection of beautiful songs that quietly sank deep into the souls of every listener.  The likelihood of a cool Spring breeze blowing into town as the band takes to the stage only makes this opportunity for music all the more special, matching the music with its seasonal counterpart.  Not only will you fall in love with Junip, but you’ll also have a chance to see Acrylics, the NYC band steadily building themselves their own reputation.  Just another great night of music in Austin.
