Monday is the 3 x 3 @ Mohawk

3for3AugustThere’s been a lot of hubbub about the Austin music dying, so I got together with some friends over at Mohawk to try a different approach.  We scored a sponsorship from Sailor Jerry, and now we’re throwing the 3×3 Series.  It means you pay 3 bucks for 3 bands, and all money made at the door goes directly to the artists.  This week we’ve got a killer line-up to kick it off with Twin Bitches, Rain Collectors and Que Pasa.  Even if you only know one of the bands on the bill, they deserve your three bucks, and you might just find another band to love. Or, come enjoy all the great drinks at Mohawk. Since it’s Monday night, we also wanted to kick off the show semi-early.  Doors are at 8 PM and bands go on at 9.  See you there!

Say Hello To Sidewinder & Graham Williams

Red7It’s well known around these parts that our beloved music scene in Austin is ever changing, and though some may go into panic mode, we here at ATH understand that change is all part of the industry.  With that said, I’m sure many of you have heard the sad news about the closing of prized venue Red 7 come this September.  While we mourn the loss of one of our favorite venues in town, let us rejoice in the news of a new venue in the Red River District.  The newly crowned Sidewinder will open in October, shortly after the closing of Red 7, and will occupy a totally revamped and remodeled space formerly known as Red Eyed Fly.  With all the creative minds on the list of those involved, this is definitely something to be excited about.  The Chronicle was one of the first to break the news.

With all the craziness currently going on in and around Red River (Cheer Ups rock wall, closing of Holy Mountain/Red 7, new venues, etc.) it seemed like a great time to speak with someone in the know.  Step in Transmission Events founder Graham Williams.  We sent Graham a few questions about his new venue and the current state of the live scene in Austin.  He has a lot to say and any real music fan in town should take his thoughts into consideration.  After the jump you can get his thoughts.

Thursday Show Spotlight: Lochness Mobsters vs LVL Up

austinThursday means the weekend is almost here, which means your body can handle hitting up a show, grabbing a drink and testing your body’s limits to get up for work on Friday.  So…here’s two shows that I definitely feel should be on your radar this evening: Lochness Mobsters tour kick off and LVL Up, Whirr.  I’m going to hit up both of these gigs…but here’s a little info to help you pick.  Lochness Mobsters are the late-night stars, closing out over at Hotel Vegas.  Taking off Friday? Spend your evening with us over here rocking the only way we know how.  Looking for an early show with a traveling band? The line-up at Mohawk with Whirr, LVL Up, Basement is killer, but doors are at 6:30, so you can get your rock on, and still make it home in time to sleep off a few Lone Stars.  Sample some tunes from my personal highlights below.

ATH Vinyl Happy Hour @ Mohawk Tonight

Screen Shot 2015-07-20 at 9.30.57 PMJust wanted to give everyone a quick heads-up that the whole ATH crew, sans Nicole (so 75%) will be DJing up at the Mohawk during Happy Hour today from 5-8.  Ray promises he’s going to spin 80s radio hits, B will probably bring some dance tunes, and I’m thinking of spinning all things Oceanic…Kiwi pop and what nots. Just wanted to give you a little warning so you had time to come join us.  Oh, and the bar just added some new beverages, including the Big Bend Brewery beers (I love their 22 Porter), so come hang with us. There’s AC, cool people and some music.

Show Preview: Dick Diver @ Mohawk (Tonight!)

dickdiverAre you a fan of great guitar pop? Fan of the ringing guitars coming from Australia? I know you are, which is all the reason you need to go to Mohawk tonight and check out Australia’s Dick Diver.  They’ve long been part of our favorite Aussie label, Chapter Music, and recently caught on with Trouble in Mind Records here in the States…so if you’re one of those folks that assigns worth to labels, then you can’t get better than that.  They’ll be touring behind the release of Melbourne, Florida, which is filled with excellent pop songs throughout, illustrating a huge step up in sound from Calendar Days. Also, they’ll be joined by Austin’s Jonly Bonly, who we’ve fawned over enough on these here pages.

Show Preview: Elvis Depressedly + Mitski @ Mohawk (7.8)

Elvis DepressedlyThere’s a great deal of shows coming through town this week, and it just so happens that one of my favorite acts is on that list, Elvis Depressedly.  I first caught on to the act via my love of Coma Cinema, which is Mat Cothran’s solo project.  It’s all part of the lo-fi pop movement, though there are definitely some more abstract and strange movements going on within the project. They bring their new effort, New Alhambra, which has been well-received, especially by me!  They’ll be joining friends Mitski on stage, along with highly-touted newcomers, Eskimeaux. Doors will open for this gig at 8 PM, and you can grab $12 tickets HERE.

Fun Night at the Mohawk Tonight – 5 PM

IMG_9665Tonight, and tonight only, you should come out and join us at Mohawk for some ATH DJ Session.  We’ll be playing some local vinyl, as well as my favorite garage, dance and indiepop hits…no laptops here folks.  But, as if joining us for Happy Hour at 5 PM wasn’t good enough to cure your Monday blues, our friends Plantation will be following our set indoors, joined by Ghost Bunny and Pleasures. Really, you could spend your whole night at Mohawk and have a blast.  Settle into your buzz while we play some hits, then enjoy some good tunes to round out the night. See you at 5 PM. Probably going to play this song.

First Annual Austin Record Label Flea Market

10479400_783936648390606_8423787667357574879_oThis Saturday is the First Annual Austin Record Label Flea Market; it’s at Mohawk, starting at 5 PM.  Entry is free, all ages welcome, and there will be 28 local Austin labels selling their wares, including some rare out-of-print pieces from a few of them.  There will be a great show following at 9 PM, which is also free. I’m one of the people responsible for this event, along with my friend Marcus at Transmission and Dan at Punctum Records.  So, with that in mind…here’s a few ideas on why I wanted to put this together…including a playlist with a sample from all the labels that are on Soundcloud.

A Tale of Two Nights: Courtney Barnett in Austin (6.4 & 6.5)

Admittedly, I’m a sideline Courtney Barnett fan.  The tunes are good, and I enjoyed The Double EP, but these two nights were definitely meant for my ladyfriend, who many might call a super-fan.  So, for the two nights we shared together with Courtney Barnett, I just sat back and watched her enjoyment, while taking in the whole situation of one of indie rock’s fastest rising stars taking over Austin.

Please, read more…

ATX Spotlight: Twin Bitches Do It Right

11174497_942951285737062_3480207812902951185_oBeen helping a friend put together a show this week over at Mohawk on Thursday night, and in doing so, I encountered a new band, Twin Bitches that’s really exciting.  Based on their two singles, the band has sort of that post-punk Constantines feeling to them, using jagged guitar chops to push forth the lyrics, which come across somewhere between a throaty growl and a gentle croon.  Musically, you can see similarities to other indie acts, but combined, it sounds like something wholly different. They’ll be playing with two of our favorite local acts, SLOW and Jonly Bonly…so come out, grab a drink, jam out and enjoy some of the finer rock n’ roll tunes in town. Doors are at 9, but you can always come hang out early.
