New Tunes from Guided By Voices

Guided By Voices is certainly an acquired taste for many, but if you listen to this track, you’re going to have to recognize the songwriting gifts of Robert Pollard and Co. You can find the song on a 7″, as well as the new LP Class Clown Spots a UFO, which hits stores on June 12th.  In my mind, this is perhaps one of the best songs the group’s written.  For one, there’s a good solid length (something often lacking from the group) and Bob’s voice sounds remarkable here.  It’s about as simple as a pop ballad as you can get, and I’m loving it!

Show Preview: Fresh Millions @ the ND (4/11)

Date Friday, May 11th
Location The ND
Doors 900 pm
Tickets $5

Friday night is always perfect for a solid dance party, so your place to be on this rainy week definitely has to be the ND.  You’ll find a new line-up for Fresh Millions, as the group now is just the project of Geoff, working with loops and samples, rocking it out on his own.  But, while we love Geoff, there’s a couple of other names on the bill, and my personal favorite is Orthy.  I picked the group to have a huge year in Austin this year, and I want you to be a part of it.  Also, Ricky Jean Francois is filling the middle spot, and I’ve heard nothing but good things.  Dance party central? Let’s all show up and support the local gig.

Scuzzy Beach Rock from Guantanamo Baywatch

Dirtnap Records has done a pretty solid job with releases this year, and they might just have another one on their hands with the new record from Guantanamo Baywatch.  The album is called Chest Crawl, and this track is pretty much a solid snippet of what the whole thing will sound like to your ears.  It reminds me of a weird surf rock jam that lives somewhere between Thee Oh Sees and the Cramps.  It might not be for everyone, but it’s the kind of stuff I’ve been into lately. Give it a little taste.

Dark Jam from Rayon Beach

Just a bit ago we were watching a passionate set from Austin’s Rayon Beach, with the three piece punk-of-sorts band opening for Terry Malts.  Their songs were catchy and powerful, even without the presence of a bass guitar.  Luckily for fans of the band it’s time for you all to open up your ears and check out the group’s new LP, This Looks Serious, which you can purchase from Hozac Records (gold colored vinyl if you’re a nerd like that). I dig the shady darkness that kind of has the band brooding here, giving them this weird sensation of facing peril head-on.  It’s only a matter of time before Austin’s darlings make bigger waves–this LP seems to be that step out the door.  AND…if you’re in Austin, the band has their LP release tonight at 29th Street Ballroom.

Great Old Song from Montero

It’s been pouring in Austin since yesterday, so I’m really happy that this song fits in perfectly with the weather.  To continue with my adoration of all things Oceanic, I’d like to reintroduce you to Montero…the project of Ben Montero (also featuring Guy of Chapter Music and Geoff of Crayon Fields).  At first, you’d think I’m just plugging my friends, and yea, I am, but this songs too great not to put it back on people’s radars.  This song comes from a 7″ they put out last year on Mistletone, and VICE caught wind of the band and made up THIS little mini-documentary.  I guess there’s never a bad time to listen to a good song, so enjoy this one friends; I do this for you all.

New Tune from Fergus and Geronimo

It’s funny, I always sort of thought at Fergus and Geronimo as Dallas’ answer to White Denim, giving off that constructional post-rock vibe with odd time signatures and what not, but it seems like a lot of people had that problem with the group; they’re a hard bunch to put into a box.  That being said, the band is returning with Funky Was the State of Affairs on August 7th via Hardly Art, and the title alone suggests that the group could be more all over the map, even a bit funkier perhaps. Doesn’t matter what it sounds like in the long run, as this single alone is enough to kick off things in the right direction.

New Single from Standard Fare

Did you see me rave about the excellent Out of Sight, Out of Town LP from Standard Fare at the beginning of the year? You definitely should have, but if you didn’t, this song’s going to remind you just what I was talking about.  The group’s signed up to release a single with WIAIWYA, and you can grab that single for nice decent price.  More importantly, the band’s been generous to provide us with a stream of their energetic jam, “Girlfriend.”  This song encompasses everything the group’s about, and I’m always excited when one of my favorite bands has new music to make it through this rainy weather. You can also stream/buy the track HERE.

Great Jam from The Intelligence

For months I’ve waited for the official word on the newest record from The Intelligence, one of my favorite acts.  Luckily, the album came my way last week, and now I get to share with you one of the reasons I’m so excited for you to hear Everybody’s Got It Easy But Me; it hits stores on June 19th via In the Red.  It’s a rambunctious jittery rocker with a discordant guitar chord that rings in the background throughout. If you get your hands on the whole album you’ll also realize that this band’s got a knack for writing hooks within the realm of arty guitar rock.

Angular Pop Track from New Cassettes

Feel like this weather is going to get me down, but I refuse to let it get to me.  So in hopes of helping you all out, I wanted to toss out this energetic number that’s been floating around for a bit on behalf of New Cassettes. The group released their album Winterhead just a month ago, followed by a short US tour, which is how they caught my ear.  I’ll give you that it’s not the most original track out in the world, but we’re all entitled to a little frivolous fun, are we not?  My favorite thing…it’s not bedroom pop or garage rock, it’s just a rock tune, albeit one that makes you stomp your feet.

Here We Go Magic – A Different Ship

Rating: ★★½☆☆

When Here We Go Magic first jumped onto the scene, it was clear that the work was mostly done by Luke Temple.  But, through two albums it has become clear that the band’s blossomed into more of a group effort. So with their third proper release, A Different Ship, would the title indicate a final change in the music itself? The answer to that question can go both ways, and therein lays the problem.

“Hard to Be Close” is the first track, and while there’s that inherent beauty that you find in Here We Go Magic tracks, but it seems rather subdued.  The percussion is fitting and tight, as I expect from a group of this stature, but there’s not a whole lot else to the song; it’s missing that, oh how do you say, magic. They follow it up with “Make Up Your Mind,” a groovier number than the rest, yet still missing that extra bit of emphasis that early HWGM numbers like “Fangela” contained.  It’s something that seems to be stuck in the overall emotion of A Different Ship.

Take, for instance, “I Believe in Action,” a song that definitely has a bit of a groove living within it, but for some reason, that sound is completely contained within, never being unleashed. Perhaps this is the sort of jam that unfolds before your eyes in the live setting (if you’re to go off the song’s ending), but the recording just doesn’t have a kick to it.  In fact, there’s really not a kick to this entire affair; it’s a slow burner to say the least.  I guess in my listening experience with the band this is the most subdued they’ve come across on record…and that might only be my perception.  Still, Here We Go Magic do possess the craftsmanship to write upbeat tunes that catch your ear.

“How Do I Know” is the lone standout jam.  From the moment Luke Temple sings, you get the feeling that he’s more passionate in this performance than he is on any of the other tracks within A Different Ship.  Even the percussion seems a bit more pronounced on this one, giving a more vibrant mood to the listener.  Honestly, this is the reason I adore the band as a whole, and I think I expected more gems like this one.

I know that bands are allowed to grow and progress throughout their careers, and that’s always appreciated, and in the very least, understood.  Sometimes, however, a group can take it too far, and I feel as if that’s what Here We Go Magic did on A Different Ship.  They took a turn in their recording that may sound cleaner than previous outings, but it left out some of the group’s strengths.  If you’re looking for a calmer, steadier version of the band, you’ll probably find this meets your fancy, but if you’re a nostalgic fan of the group, you might be a little let down. Better luck next time.
