Chilled Out Bedroom Pop from Young Man

As we grow closer and closer to the release of Young Man‘s Vol. 1 LP, the buzz seems to continue to grow. I’m not going to lie and pretend like I’m not buying into the hype, but I’ll say that this is perhaps my favorite track of all that’s been floating around so far.  There’s steady pacing, and the music that surrounds Colin Caulfield’s vocals is perfectly fitting.  There’s nothing overdone in this track; it’s all just understated enough to come across as beautifully trickled bedroom pop music.  You can finally get your hands on this record when it hits stores on May 22nd via Frenchkiss.

More New Tunes from Leland Sundries

Are you tired of me talking about Leland Sundries and their Foundry EP yet? Well, I’ve almost covered all the tunes on the site, so maybe this will be the last time (I’m not making any promises).  Nick Loss-Eaton has a great way with matter-of-fact storytelling and vocal delivery, which makes a song like this both interesting and attractive to listeners.  It’s a bit in the vein of Americana, but for the most part, it’s got a steady little country chug to it…although I’ll admit it’s probably one of the most upbeat tracks on the EP.  I don’t care if it’s just me, these dudes have something going.

New Texas Punk from Riverboat Gamblers

If you’ve been living under a rock for the past several years, then perhaps Riverboat Gamblers is a band you’ve never heard of, but those of us in Texas have long been witness to the rockers.  They’ve just announced their latest LP, The Wolf You Feed, and they’re currently offering up this rad new single for your ears.  If the music isn’t enough to get you going, then also take to heart that the group has fleshed out their sound with the help of another notable Texas punk, Mark Ryan of Mind Spiders. The more I listen to this jam, the more excited I get by the prospect of a full length—you can grab it for yourself on May 22nd.

Great Upbeat Track from Big Wave Riders

Last year Big Wave Riders released a nice little EP that caught my attention, so with news that the band will finally have a full length coming out later this year via Soliti Music, I just had to post about it.  Never mind the fact that I already love this group’s first release; this new track is absolutely marvelous.  Honestly, I know the music isn’t as fitting, but there’s a vocal element at times that reminds me of Jarvis during “Common People.”  Listen closely and see if you can hear it too! If not, then just enjoy this song for as long as your mouse will let you hit repeat; I’ve been doing it all day.

Great Sprawling Track from Wildeflower

Over here in the States we’re probably not too familiar with Wildeflower, but after listening to the tracks off their Good Girl/Amazing Discovery 7″, I’m expecting that to change–of course, that all hinges upon people believing my hype machine (I don’t think they do).  The recording of this B-Side song is perfect; you can barely make out the audible bird chirps in the background.  Musically, it seems to fit that natural world sound, crafting a track that seems to fit perfectly within some far off landscape.  If you play this song again and again, you’re going to get immense rewards–all of which will make you a huge fan of Wildeflower.

Noisy Little Rocker from No Monster Club

If you’re looking for a band that lives somewhere between Fresh and Onlys and Wavves, then let me introduce you to No Monster Club!  The group came to my attention as I was following one of my favorite smaller labels, CF Records.  They’ve recently helped this Irish trio put out a small small run of their newest LP, Dublin, and it’s a pretty solid introduction to the band.  Below you’ll find a rambunctious bit of garage pop filled with infectious hooks and a bit of disregard for hi-fi recordings.  Maybe it’s just me, but I can’t get this jam out of my head.

Royal Headache – S/T

Rating: ★★★★½

Lo-fi recordings and accompanying jangle pop rock have been the rage for sometime, and that’s all well and good, but sometimes you just want to have a little bit of a twist on tried-and-true fashions. When you head to your local record store, and you should do so immediately, to pick up the self-titled record from Royal Headache you’ll find exactly what you’ve need. This album’s furious and fun, but just different enough to make the group stand out among the masses.

Side A of this excellent LP opens just as you would expect from a band with garage leanings, furiously paced by the gritty guitar sound.  But, then enters frontman Shogun, using his voice to take you back to the nostalgic soulful recordings of the 50s/60s.  Perhaps you’ll hear bits of angular post-rock similar to Cloud Nothings, but the vocals take you somewhere else entirely.  Oddly, the powerful dynamic between Shogun and the rest of the band fits the mood of Royal Headache perfectly.  From start to finish, Side A is a winning adventure of six incredible tracks, with the frenetic “Girls” remaining my personal favorite.  That being said, the exuberance isn’t always a pummeling in-your-face affair as evidenced by the somewhat slowly paced “Kinds of Love.” The fact that there aren’t any lyrics might come as a surprise after the first five tracks, but it’s the perfect cleansing before you flip the record on its backside.

If you fell for Side A then Side B is absolutely going reaffirm that Royal Headache  are your new favorite band.  “Down the Lane” definitely fits into the modern musical spectrum though it has a tendency to sound dated–in an absolutely good way.  At times, Shogun even sounds a bit like Robert Pollard stretching his vocals to the maximum; it’s perhaps one of the most emotionally captivating songs on the entire record.  Plus, you don’t want to miss the closer, “Pity,” another track that seems to have ingrained itself in my mind.  I definitely enjoy the steadiness in the vocals on this number, leaving you with the sentiment that the group has evolved with regards to the conceptual aspect of the record.

Nowadays it seems that a lot of people can record in their bedroom or make an album of lo-fi tracks that quickly burst into a huge success, but you’re not going to find anything at all like Royal Headache.  That alone is one reason that you need to get your hands on this LP, but you couple that with the fact that there’s not a single track on this record that you could skip, and you have a winning group of songs that you might not ever escape.  Each song is infectious, whether you base that on the inherent hooks or Shogun’s performance; you’re not going to want to listen to anything else for some time to come.  Yeah, I said it; it really is that good.

More Great Rock n’ Roll from Fidlar

I’ve already raved about Fidlar from some time, so when this new track surfaced, I couldn’t help but fall back in love with the band.  It’s a great jam for a Friday, with garage rock jangling kicking on for the duration of the track.  It’s even a bit sloppy at parts with the vocals getting a touch scratchy.  When I came across this song it also came news that Mom and Pop had picked up the band, so we can expect a full length of rocking jams to come from the band later on in the year–at least that’s what I’m hoping for.
