Throwing Muses to Release Purgatory/Paradise via HHBTM

TM-photo-steve-gullickPurgatory/Paradise saw a limited CD release last year, which earned Throwing Muses some incredible press.  But, with the CD medium not always reaching all the corners of the world, HHBTM Records has opted to release the full length via vinyl and cassette.  The song below is one of the main singles from the band, so why not revisit for a taste of what you’ll get when you, undoubtedly, pick up your own copy.  Kristin Hersh sounds as confident and strong as she ever has, and that goes for the whole album, not just this track.  You’ll definitely want to take a listen if you haven’t already.

More New Music from Rural Alberta Advantage

runnersI’ve admitted to my adoration for Rural Alberta Advantage, but I was slightly skeptical with their last single, but it seems like this new one has things right back on track.  There’s just something about the vocals that always stick with me; it’s as if they don’t quite fit the music, yet they clearly fit perfectly into the band’s well-crafted sound.  It sounds like country-stomping indie rock, and not the Americana sort, but somewhere more developed, somewhere less-traveled perhaps.  I look forward to the group’s new effort, Mended with Gold, which comes out on September 30th via Saddle Creek Records.

New Tune from Happy Diving

happygilmoreWe’re drawing nearer to the release of the new album from Happy Diving, and their new single is really keeping me going today.  It’s got an old school feel to it, in regards to guitar pop, which reminds me of a more rocking blend of what Austin’s the Impossibles were trying to do in their later days.  Sure, there’s an ode to Weezer in that and  an innocence in the lyrical content, but wait until the song’s screeching guitars feedback into your ears, crashing down through your speakers; it’s a special bit for your listening pleasure today.  Big World is released on October 21st via Father Daughter Records.

Download Lost Track from Sister Flo

floRecently I posted about the Finnish legend, Sister Flo, trying to get some love for the band in honor of the group releasing Tragician’s Hat on its 10 Year Anniversary…it features a whole disc of unreleased tunes.  But, one tune that was lost to the world that unfortunately didn’t make it onto the collection of rarities is “The Look.”  Clerical errors and Finnish gnomes are said to be to blame, but Soliti Music is now offering the dream track for free download.  Those of you who long for the days of Grandaddy and the like will find yourself absolutely in love, which will hopefully encourage you to go back and discover the band for the first time; you’ll be happy you gave it some spins.  Soliti has the album for sale HERE.

Show Preview: Shivery Shakes and Templo X @ Mohawk (9.16)

Shivery ShakesRock n’ roll season is in full swing here in Austin, and there’s a great local show that requires your attendance on Tuesday evening at the Mohawk.  Our boys in Shivery Shakes will be headlining the night, and we love them so much we’re releasing their debut LP in October with our friends from Punctum Records.  But, let’s not forget Templo X is playing.  One member currently resides in Philly, while the rest of the band is staying local.  Sounds like the making of a great history that’s not too far off from the one begun by our boys in Literature.  Ultraviolet open up the night, so show up early to make sure we’re all supporting the local jams.

Sweet Release of the Week: Seatraffic – Beauty in the Night

seaSeptember and October are chock full of releases almost every week, and this week there were some real gems out there.  I picked up the new Jonly Bonly and Avi Buffalo, but was unable to find this Seatraffic LP.  I like the progress the duo has made in their songwriting.  Here you’ll here a pulsing electronic beat that meets the rising vocal melody, while drums roll about in the background.  Beauty in the Night is definitely worth spending some time with, whether that be just today by listening HERE, or by finding yourself a nice copy to play at home. You’ll find that you enjoy things quite a bit, and then the world/week will feel just right.

I’m In Love with I’m In Love by Fools Gold

foolishI said it. This new tune from Fool’s Gold is just perfect.  It’s filled with a few mini-suites, musically speaking, but in there you’ll find so many delectable ear treats that you’re going to find it hard not to just give into the music.  There’s a little bit of funkiness to it, though I tend to think the song is just super playful, built to let you freak out and enjoy one hell of a day.  The LA act are busy finishing touches on their next album, slated for a release next year, but when you’ve got a hit like this, you can’t hold it back from the masses.  Enjoy yourselves with this one kids.

Funky Tune from HOMESHAKE

homemaltThe good things about boutique labels working with other, larger, entities, is that they can release really great music that might not get the time of day otherwise.  That’s what I get from Homeshake, one of the bands on Sinderlyn.  It’s not that I don’t dig the tune; it’s that it reaches out there a bit from the modern indie lore, so I like that it gets a day in the sun.  There’s this really funky guitar line grooving all over the place, using a chilled out vocal delivery to really settle things down.  Does indie funk exist as a genre? Maybe easy-indie listening or elevator indie? Regardless, I’ll be down to listen to the whole In the Shower LP when it’s release on October 7th.

Political Return for Radio Dept.

RADIO_2It’s been quite some time since we’ve actually heard new music from Radio Dept., who just happen to be one of my favorite acts; they’re like my own personal Swans (Swans are better than Radiohead, right?). They’ve always had a slightly political bent, so it’s no surprise that the first bit of new music we hear from them is a protest song with a vocal sample that basically calls for the death of fascism.  There’s a pulsing electronic undertone, yet as always they coat it in these beautiful washes of warmth that just scream for me to listen over and over again.  This might be a one off, but I’m crossing my fingers it means way more than that.

Pleased To Meet You: The Frowning Clouds

DIG FC2014 front coverDiscovery is the great thing about running this site; you stumble into things you didn’t even know existed then you’re so excitable you’ve got to share with the folks.  This week I’ve really been rocking to The Frowning Clouds, an Australian act I hadn’t heard as of yet.  They’ve got a bit of psychedelia in their tunes, but also this grittiness associated with garage rockers; it reminds me of the best moments of Mozes and the Firstborn.  They’ve got a new LP titled Legalize Everything coming your way next week via Rice is Nice, so if it’s your bag, grab at it!
