Great Return for Imaginary Pants

coverImaginary Pants only have a handful of small releases, but I’m really in love with their most recent EP, Kites at Night.  Perhaps it’s because there’s five new songs; you can’t ever complain when you get five songs with Rose Melberg involved. There’s a variety of songs too, with the one below opening the EP up with a warm bit of summery pop, but there’s also a couple of more upbeat tracks like “Creaking Gates” and “Bleak Outside.”  Either way, you’re not going to be disappointed with what you’re getting, and if you’re so incline, you can get the EP for NYP or order the tape from Lost in Sound Tapes.  You win either way.

Relaxed Tune from The Golden Dregs

goldenIt’s that time again.  Art Is Hard Records have put out their latest Pizza Club Single, this time with The Golden Dregs…it’s the project of Ben Woods who’s done tons of great work with bands like Gorgeous Bully and the Black Tambourines.  This time, however, he’s stepped out as the leader of the band, and what an exciting introduction to his own skill set.  You’ll hear a bit of a country twang in the trickling guitar work, crafting an atmosphere that leaves the perfect set up for his relaxing vocal entrance.  You’re going to dig this groove.

Dance House Banger from Anamanaguchi

anaA brand new Anamanaguchi track popped up this week, and it’s the perfect jam for a Friday morning, or a late Friday night.  It’s an electronic jam that’s reminiscent of when CSS was a really solid act, with playful vocal tracks bouncing over a hard-hitting dance beat.  It’s the kind of song you want on your playlist for all summer parties, so you can get things going in the right way from the start.  There’s no word on when the track will be released on an album, but you can definitely spend some enjoyable moments throwing down with it right now.  Give a listen.

New Music from Honeyblood

honeyOne of the many acts that really impressed me during SXSW was Honeyblood, backed by the enthusiastic support of our friend Mike in Scotland.  They just released a new single off of their new album, which is a self-titled affair that’s set to be released on July 15th via Fat Cat Records.  For a duo, the ladies sure have quite a punch in their sound, although this tune recalls more of an early Metric sound…that’s a compliment in my book.  You get a glimpse of their ability to bring some noise on the back side of the song, as the guitars get distorted, but just don’t ignore the sugar-y quality of the vocals…despite the subject matter.  Hope you enjoy.

Dead Stars – Slumber

deadRating: ★★★★☆

After a couple of great EPs, New York’s Dead Stars have completed their debut full-length, Slumber.  As an early fan of the band, let me tell you that it’s more than lived up to my expectations.  It sounds like a composite of Dinosaur Jr and Nada Surf, using great guitar work to enhance the group’s melodic sound.

When “Someone Else” opens the record, you can hear the band pushing forth with distorted guitar work and a pounding rhythm section.  It’s the best way to open this record, providing listeners with a glimpse of the band’s brand of guitar pop.  But, while there’s a definite wall of noise, beneath it all lays the secret to the group’s success: it’s all pop inside.  Just take one listen to the tone of the vocals and you’ll get precisely what I’m talking about.  But, while the opening tune on Slumber is rather loud, the group does possess a natural skill to pull back, as they do on the next few tracks, “Summer Bummer” and “Walking Away.”  These two tracks offer up gentler takes on guitar pop, with a more relaxed feel and a larger focus on harmony.

Still, the bread and butter for the band, in my opinion, are when they turn up and rock it out.  “Crawl” is the perfect vision of this attribute; the guitar has a sharp edge to it, and the song seems to almost work too fast, creating this excellent tension that’s fully unleashed when the band angrily launches into the chorus of “I can crawl away if you want” for the third time, just before the track abruptly ends.  Your last look at like-minded tunes comes via “Wasted,” which is placed perfectly near the end of the record.  The distorted guitar work gives just the right amount of energy, balancing out the softer end of the LP.

While Dead Stars choose to slow things down a bit on that latter half of Slumber, you’ll still find some really special songs lurking about, such as “Older.”  It’s a strummed ballad with a really soft touch on the vocal; you could easily see the band fleshing this out into another distorted guitar pop tune, but their reluctance to do so actually makes the song more refreshing, providing a little bit of differentiation within the confines of the album.  I’ve also grown to enjoy “Never Knew You” quite a bit.  There’s some recording touches like the clicking of the drum sticks in spots that really add a cool touch.

In the end, Dead Stars have completed an album that’s perfect as summer really gets underway.  It’s filled with songs that you can blast on your stereo while you sing along to your favorite lyrical pieces.  With guitar pop regaining it’s prominence in the rock n’ roll world, you’re not likely to find it executed any better than on Slumber…so what are you waiting for.

Stanley Brinks and Freshcard Release Album of Duets

Pizza EspressoIt seems like Stanley Brinks is all about collaborations this year, having earlier worked with The Wave Pictures, and now with songwriter Freshcard.  The story goes that Mr. Brinks met Freshcard whilst she was working at a bakery in Paris; he invited her to sing some songs, and their friendship was born.  Together, the two will release Pizza Espresso as collaborative affair between their two labels, Fika Recordings and Wiaiwya.  It’s an album of soft ballads and shared singing roles, allowing for maximum pop indulgence for the listener. You’ll be quite pleased with the results of these two.

More New Music from Matt Kivel

mattkivelThere are some songs, and albums for that matter, that just seem to fit right into your life.  For me, the work of Matt Kivel is perfectly fitting for my reflective summer away from work.  For instance, this latest single has this rolling drum beat, with lofty vocals floating atop, while varying layers of guitar work come into the fold.  Sort of reminds me of long summer road trips through the Northwest with nothing but the stars overhead.  His new album, Days of Being Wild will come just in time for you to take your own trip, whatever it may be; it’s being released on July 8th via Woodsist.

Indiepop Bliss from Strange Babes

strangebabesI owe a huge debt of gratitude to IPSML for turning me on to this ridiculously glorious hit from Strange Babes.  Everything about this song is pretty perfect, from the way that it’s been recorded to the melody within the tune itself.  There’s not too much info on the band, other than an obscure reference to Los Angeles and New Zealand.  You can hear the NZ reference musically, but in the end, none of it is really going to matter because the song is pure indiepop success.  Sit back and enjoy yourself.

New Song from Web of Sunsets

webEarlier this year we raved about the wonderful debut album from Web of Sunsets, Room of Monsters.  That album was filled with these gentle songs of wandering, filled with beautiful harmonies.  Now, the band has announced that they’ll be releasing a brand new EP, titled Gin Tapes.  This song below is the first single from the EP, and it’s got a similar drifting quality, accented by really ornate guitar playing.  The EP will see a release date from End of Time Records next Tuesday, June 17th, so be on the look out for that in stores, not to mention look for the band as they’ve got a summer tour lined up, though it’s mostly West. Sad face.

New Music from The Rosebuds

rosebuddiesThere’s always been something incredibly special about the music of Rosebuds. No matter when I throw a track on, be it in a mix or just on random shuffle, there’s always an immediate change in emotion.  It’s a welcome change, even if it only enhances current states of happiness; it just feel good to listen to this band.  News just broke that they’ll be releasing a brand new album, and even more exciting is that they’ve signed on to release the record with the much revered, local label, Western Vinyl.  This LP is titled Sand + Silence, and it will be released on August 5th;  the first single is streaming below.
