Show Preview: Love Inks @ Mohawk (4.28) – FREE

showoffWhat’s better than a free show at one of Austin’s best venues? A free show with three incredible electronic bands, and that’s precisely what you’ll get if you head out to Mohawk tonight.  First up you’ll get Silk Rodeo; they offer a dark bit of electronica with an ability to build their sound to swelling heights of pop delight.  Then, there’s Whiite Walls; this is perhaps one of Austin’s biggest rising electronic based stars, though they play with a full-on band, making their sets remarkable.  Closing the night will be Love Inks, who affirmed their place in the local music scene with last year’s Generation Club.  I hear they’re working on brand new tunes, so you might get a set full of new tracks for your ears.  In the end, it’s a great local bill, and one you’ll be sore about if you don’t take advantage of this FREE SHOW.

Nice Bit of Pop from Easy

easyYou’ve got to start off Monday’s rather gently, especially after all the music fans in Austin endured an incredible week of shows.  So , in lieu of that concept, I bring you this tune from Easy, a rad little act from LA.  They craft this careful pop music that rises and falls, often with orchestral touches and changes in rhythm throughout the track.   Personally, I dig how they speed things down, then revert back to a gentler pace; it’s a good little effect, and one that allows for the band’s songwriting to be put in full display. Expect to hear more from these guys going forwards.

Another Hit from 3108

3108_pressphotoJust a few weeks ago I brought you the infinitely catchy “Go to Hell” from 3108, the next release from Trouble In Mind Records.  Today, I bring you another such track, offering you a song that dwells in the same vein, though this one isn’t as immediately catchy.  I don’t mean to diminish the tune, as good things come to those who wait, but it’s simply different; after all, you don’t want your records to all sound exactly the same!  The driving rhythm is similar, but the pop sensibility doesn’t unfold as quickly, lurking for you in the back of the vocals.  This self-titled record will be available for you to purchase at your favorite store next week!

Bouncy Tune from Astrid Swan

astridswanUp until now, the music we’ve gotten from Astrid Swan has been pretty mellow, which is well and good, but today we’re finally able to share with you one of my favorite tracks from her album, Astrid 4. Of course, the song features the great vocals that have been present on everything we’ve shared with you.  To me, this illustrates the diversity that you’ll find on her new record, from ballads to upbeat numbers, all of which are well-produced.  You can order the Astrid 4 from our good friends at Soliti Music.

Nothing Covers Low

nothingIt appears that my offerings on this Tuesday are going to be a bit up the sad bastard stream, or the slow core or whatever other genre we can toss at the downtrodden tunes.  This tune’s great; it was great the first time Low did it on Things We Lost in the Fire.  Now, however, it’s being retouched up by rising star, Nothing.  I love the fact that the song still captures the emotion of the original; it still sounds just as frail as it did originally, showing that the band is covering this for more than just kicks.  It clearly has meaning to the group, as it does for me, so perhaps you’re one of those folks too who’ve always been attached to the craftsmanship of Low.  Give this a listen and see how you feel.

New Music from Ides (Alanna of Joanna Gruesome)

idesLast year’s Joanna Gruesome LP really put the band on everyone’s map, so when something related pops up, it only makes sense that we’d give it a look-see.  Ides is the project of Alanna, who really seems to have found her own voice away from the band, not that I’m encouraging her to leave; it’s just a nice outlet I’m hoping.  The song’s pretty heavy for the most part, spanning nearly five minutes of this haunting vocal beneath these deep guttural guitar chords.  It’s funny that even on her own Soundcloud page, she describes the sounds as #sadcore, which is definitely fitting, though possibly selling herself short.  If you’re looking for some introspective music today, go HERE and listen to more from Ides.

Fresh Music from We Can’t Enjoy Ourselves

wceoI love when bands we’ve written about hit us up with a new song after being quiet for so long.  We hadn’t heard from We Can’t Enjoy Ourselves since their last LP, Make a Mess of Sacred Ground…a must have if you ask me.  Today, however, they sent over this great track from their upcoming album, which should be out this summer.  It starts with a screeching bit of feedback before the guitars and drums start to bounce and jangle their way into the song.  Once the song gets going, there’s all sorts of little moves in and out of the plodding  fare that is the focus.  These guys have definitely been working on their craftsmanship, so take a listen.

More New La Sera Tunes

laseraWe’ve definitely got to get you into this new La Sera track.  Now that Vivian Girls are over, Katy can spend her time concentrating on her other project, and this song is an indicator that she’s definitely spent that time well.  This latest single from her forthcoming record has her sounding in complete control of her songwriting craft; there’s a soloing guitar, crashing cymbals, and, of course, her intoxicating vocal performance.  It’s just another reason that we’re expecting great things from Hour of the Dawn when it’s released by Hardly Art on May 13th.

Dark Pop from Alex Cameron

alexThis tune from Alex Cameron came out of left-field.  It’s this little bit of electronic pop, but there’s a resemblance to pop forefathers like David Byrne and David Bowie, especially when you get to that computer-distorted guitar line.  This is the sort of thing where you’re listening, then you press repeat to make sure it’s as remarkable as you thought. If you listen to the change in vocal after the 3 minute mark, then hopefully, like me, you’ll agree that Alex is someone that we need to keep an eye on.  His debut solo record, Jumping the Shark,  will make its way into the public’s hand this weekend.

Austin Spotlight: Pollen

artworks-000076438282-4l1oko-t500x500I’ve been looking through all the upcoming shows, trying to find something new that I could really gravitate to, which is when I discovered this track from Pollen.  The band’s fairly new to town, but they’ve already booked a really great show at Blackheart Bar with LA Snacks and Party Girl (4/25).  It’s a free show, and it should have this catchy little tune played in the garage-rock realm to keep you bouncing on your toes throughout the evening.  For me, I love the crunchy sound of the guitar and the riding of the cymbals by the drummer, but it’s the erratic vocal delivery that really sells me on the group.  Hopefully we’ll see you at the Blackheart next week: it’s free!
