Another New Song from Aan (SXSW Act)

AAN_web_press_photo_lo-res_jpgWe’ve been covering Aan for some time, and it seems only fitting that we offer up this latest tune of theirs to close out our Friday offerings.  This tune comes from their Amor Ad Nauseum effort, which is available now.  It’s filled with lofty songwriting, soaring vocals, and an organic structure that reminds me an awful lot of Snowmine .  The Portland act has won over pretty much everyone in their homebase, and it looks like with a big tour lined up-including SXSW-they’ll be happily spreading their tunes to all of us outside the Beaver State.

Austin Show Spotlight: Young Tongue Single Release @ Red 7 (2/22)

IMG_6338Everyone in Austin should be really excited about the incredible release show lined up for Austin’s Young Tongue.  They were known previously as The Baker Family, but they opted for a name change as they felt the new name better suited the music they’ve been creating in the last few years.  They’re celebrating the release of their incredible new single “Cat Calls,” which comes with three other incredible new songs; pick it up HERE. But, in case you’re not familiar with the act, the show also features The Del-Vipers, Hikes and Residual Kid, so it’s a pretty solid line-up all around.  The show is only going to cost you $6, which is a steal for all the incredible talent that’ll be gracing the stage. Be sure to show up early and catch all the groups, and clap really loud when you hear this awesome new single.

Careful Craftsmanship from Web of Sunsets

webofsunsetsIt’s actually a rather slow week for releases here in February, but there’s definitely something that should be on your radar is the new album from Web of Sunsets.  Room of Monsters offers up a listen that seems to sit well with the climactic occurrences, sitting between the cold nostalgia of winter and the warmth of a Spring afternoon.  This particular song has this dreamy quality, while still holding onto a certain sense of traditional Americana…it’s perfect for those days laying in your hammock while your mind wanders.  You can pick up the album this week from End of Time Records.

Pastel Colours Like Pizza

pizzaWhy do they like pizza you ask? Well, Pastel Colours have just released their second single via the Pizza Club, which is an artistic musical endeavor put on by the excellent Art Is Hard Records.  I like the pulsating rhythm that’s murkily moving beneath the vocals in the front while the guitar lines seems to cascade into some other region.  Those of you digging the dark underbelly of the psychedelic movement will surely find yourselves fans of what’s going on in this track; this is the way that sound was supposed to be created.

Austin Spotlight: I Am the Albatross

albatrossGrowing up in Austin, there’s been two things that have been a constant in the music scene: punk rock and country.  Listening to this new single from I Am the Albatross combines both those elements, making them one of the more diverse Austin acts of the moment.  This track starts off with a steady atmospheric folk element, but soon jumps into a full-steam-ahead barroom rocker, before pausing for a bit of a breather near the end of the song.  It’s definitely a dynamic approach, and one that should make the group’s Austin shows worthy of your attendance.  You can grab the band’s self-titled EP now right HERE.

New Tunes from Majical Cloudz

devonDevon Welsh has one of the most striking voices in the current music scene.  I’ve watched him silence crowds notoriously known for being noisy, and I’ve let his voice haunt my listening habits for the last year or so.  His album Impersonator was our #1 choice for Top 2013 Albums, and I can’t wait for his next outing.  To hold us over, he’s unleashed a great interactive video to accompany his brand new song, which you’ll find HERE.  At the moment, I’m pretty sure that there’s not a whole lot Majical Cloudz can do to sway us away from our supreme fandom.  You can also listen to the tune below….and wait patiently for the next genius release from the act.

Brand New Song from Songs for Walter

songsforwalterI’ve written tons of posts about Laurie Hulme and his project, Songs for Walter, but as long as he keeps writing really incredible folk pop tunes I won’t be turning my back from his work.  This latest song comes from the heart of Laurie, as his lyrics discuss the influence of his family meeting the changes that accompany young adulthood.  It features a steady drum beat to support the vocals and the banjo, leaving you with this emotionally pleasing pop ditty.  It was released digitally by Bleeding Gold, who have a nice little catalog you should visit.

Flagland Keep Pumping Out the Hits

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAWe’re just a short few weeks away from the highly anticipated new album from Flagland.  Today they return with yet another hit from Love Hard, which is one of my favorite tracks from the record.  It’s one of the record’s longer songs, but it’s one of those that reminds me of the youthful excitement we all enjoyed, when riffs were sharp and lyrics were shouted. The entire record holds onto that sentiment, screaming for you to partake in its carefree exuberance.  You can pick it up from Father Daughter Records on February 25th.

Austin Spotlight: New Music from Mini Dresses

coverWe first brought you news of Mini Dresses when we discovered the now defunct Manic Pop Records (RIP), and we’re happy to see the group is back with a few new tracks for your ears.  I think perhaps one of the things that draws me to this group is that there’s not a whole lot like it going on in Austin at the moment, so it’s refreshing to find something a little bit out of the norm.  It might possibly fall under the dream-pop category, but it’s not often crafted so carefully.  There’s two songs to grab, which will come out soon on a new 7″, but like always, we suggest donating to the cause, as it keeps our bands working on music.

Quiet Indiepop from Catenine

coverYou’ve got to keep up with the little labels; they keep running and running at a constant pace, with hidden gems turning out left and right, such as this new tune from Catenine.  It just got recently got released by February Records, and it’s definitely one of those tunes that should be quickly added to everyone’s daily playlist.  While the twang of the guitar might be indicative of a more upbeat track, the melancholy vocal entrance surely delays that feeling.  There’s a bit of a volume explosion just before the one-minute mark that definitely makes the tune a standout.  Give this a whirl.
