New Tune from The High Wire

highwireIt’s been a minute since we’ve written about London’s The High Wire, but the group is back with a new single for you to download today.  On this track, you’ll find an expansive indie rock approach from the band, using as many instruments as possible to create this wall of ornate sound. Of course, the multiple part harmonies created definitely have a soft spot in my heart; they’re the most prominent part of the song itself.  The group also has a few other singles that are worthy of your attention, so feel free to browse through their site and get some tunes to round out your solid indie rock collection.

Upbeat Number from Little Racer

littleracerFeel like I started off the week throwing a lot of somber tunes your way, so I feel like today should be a little more uplifting, making this new track from Little Racer the perfect ditty for your day.  Musically, it’s all about the rhythm section filling out the track; the bass and drum beat propel the song, but also give you something you can tap your toes too.  This doesn’t mean you can’t attach your ears to the warmth of the vocals, but rather that the mood is impacted most by what’s going on in the background.  You can find this tune on the group’s upcoming EP, which is slated for an April release.

Swinging Pop from Making Marks

makingmarksLast time I wrote about Making Marks was in 2012, so I’m happy that my 2014 is starting out with a new record from the Oslo quartet. It’s interesting to hear their lead single, “Bruises,” as it definitely has a nice Americana twist to it, showing just how wide the band’s influences spread.  For those of you interested in indiepop delights, you’ll love how the group intertwine male and female vocal parts. Their latest release, A Thousand Half-Truths, was just released overseas by the excellent Fika Recordings.  You should pick one up, as the record’s destined to be one of those collector’s gems.

Austin Spotlight: Captive

captiveThe other night I was hanging with our boys Grape St, who always put on an excellent show, and they advised me to keep an eye on Captive, their opening act. What I caught was this minimalist dark wave act, that came across like a mix between early Cure and the popper moments of Joy Division. They use sterile drum beats and propulsive bass lines to affect your emotional investment, and the vocals definitely are spot on. There’s not a whole lot of information out there, but with Austin’s music scene rising, these guys are sure to be part of that rise.

Catchy Gem from Bart Davenport

bartdavenportI missed out on posting about Bart Davenport‘s first single, but I just couldn’t skip out on this one.  It’s a pretty classy little pop gem, reminiscent of the old Kings of Convenience.  There’s a warm melody and a gentler vocal delivery that carefully swings its way atop the track’s jangling guitars.  You might call it a classic pop formula, but who cares when it sounds this good?  You can grab Bart’s Physical World LP when it’s released on March 4th via Burger Records. These are the sort of tunes that warm my soul.

Austin Spotlight: Genuine Leather Release New Single

TheEnemyWe’ve encouraged you to listen to Genuine Leather before, the project of Chris form Gorgeous Hands, but if you haven’t taken heed, then perhaps this new single is going to be the perfect one to get you on the train. It takes aim right at the heart of pop songwriting, and succeeds without a doubt.  The sound of the guitar strumming as the track chugs along really reminds me of the purity that exists in good composition.  No word as of yet whether or not this is going to appear on an upcoming album, or just float on as a great single, but you should talk a listen regardless.

Fresh New Jam from The Airplanes

theairplanesIf you haven’t heard of the Airplanes then you’re not paying attention! Take notes!  The Arkansas group has released some hyper pop tunes that’ve really won us over completely, and they’re back at it with a new tune for 2014…two actually. The Paper Hearts EP has two energetic songs that will have you tapping your toes, and hopefully keep you warm for the rest of the weekend, dreaming of warmer climes.  They’re currently offering up the EP for the cost of, well, whatever you’d like, so we encourage to rush over to their page, introduce yourself, and grab some really sweet jams.  It’s the only way we all win.

New Stomper from Axxa/Abraxas

axxaabraxasFriday’s are for two things here in Austin: you either get weird or you get fun, or you can do both if you’re so inclined.  I think the latest track to come from Axxa/Abraxas accomplishes both, thus making my day; it’s one of those tunes that stretches over several genres, ambling between psychedelia and roots rock and pop forms.  Personally, I like the percussion, giving the track a little bit of a sideways stomp that really ups the energy level.  It’s just one of the great tunes that comes from the band’s self-titled album, which is being released by Captured Tracks on March 4th.

New Pop Tune from Tacocat

tacocatYou’re probably going to look twice when you look at the title of Tacocat‘s newest single, but that’s entirely the point, or so I think.  Tacocat have infectious hooks and power-pop licks to make them supremely accessible, but at the same time, they’re not taking themselves entirely too seriously. They’re out to kick out tracks that envelop the fun side of being in a rock n’ roll band, even if it means writing a tune about your period.  If this is your style of music, then you’ll need to get your hands on NVM when it’s released by Hardly Art on February 25th.

New Jam from My Gold Mask

mygoldmaskI feel like Monday’s always a good day for me to chime in with something upbeat to get your ears and dance shoes ready for some hump day happy hour action, or maybe just a nice jog.  This latest single from My Gold Mask is sure to do the trick for you; it’s got a driving rhythm to provide some excellent energy, not to mention a vocal that would make Kevin Bacon run around doing gymnastics in an old warehouse.  It’s meant for good times, and sometimes those are the tracks that make our day; I hope this song makes your day.
