Audacity – Butter Knife

Audacity-Butter-KnifeRating: ★★★★☆

Make no mistake about it, garage rock is best when blended with punk rock enthusiasm and pop sensibility.  If you take a listen to Butter Knife, it’ll only take you a few minutes to realize that Audacity has mastered the art form, leaving those of you thirsting for a solid rock record with the solution to what ails you.

Sure, “Couldn’t Hold a Candle” is the perfect way to open the record, and it might convince others that Audacity was going to bring more of a pop sensibility to this outing; it’s got these great hooks from both the anthemic lyrics and the guitar playing, but what sold me on my infatuation with Butter Knife was the following tune, “Pigs.” Furiously the drums pound, pushing the pace of the track into more of the classic punk rock realm, but, please do hold on here.  Just after the 1.5 minute mark, the song breaks down; it turns itself on its side, bringing more of a power-pop sound into the fold.  For me, it’s the best of both worlds!

The next big hit you’ll find is “Cold Rush.” It begins with a twanging guitar that rings, then moves into this bouncing swing of energy and brattiness.  Using backing vocals from the far off background is another nice touch that really makes this tune a straight-up winner.  Even as the longest track on the album it never ceases to lose its accessibility, making one of my favorite tunes. And if you skip ahead just a bit, you’ll find “Rooster,” which is another track that’s worth your time (although they all are really). One great thing about this track is not just the pacing, but the clarity of the vocals that allows you to really sink your teeth into the tune.

When listening to Butter Knife, you’ll see that every song has something to offer listeners.  Those of you looking for a classic pop sound can find yourself nodding along to tunes like “Onomatopoeia” or “Dancing Under the Soft Light;” they both offer great ballad stylings, though done in Audacity‘s fashion. Or there’s the harder edged tunes like “Tell Yourself” and “Watered Down,” so you get the best of both worlds: punk and pop. The band moves between the two so easily that it’s clear they’ve mastered the form, better than many of their peers.

As garage rock continues to make its push, it’s easy to get weighed down by all the countless names coming in and out of the genre.  But, every once in a while you stumble onto some group that’s doing it just right.  It’s not too punk, it’s not too pop.  Butter Knife walks a fine line between the two, and in doing so, Audacity have left us with a record that we’ll be bobbing along to for quite some time.

Fresh New Tune from Shimmering Stars

shimmeringSince the release of Violent Hearts, Shimmering Stars have been fairly quiet on the musical front.  But, like all bands, they’ve been changing things up and working on new tunes.  Their first single fulfills on the band’s promise to bring a noisier element to their music, whilst offering up their typical stylings of pop sensibility.  For me, I can hear a change in the delivery of the vocals, until you get near the 2 minute mark, where things take on a gentler tone.  I’m interested to see what is to come of the band when they finally unleash their next LP.

New (ish) Track from The Entrance Band

1393921_10151766034632632_1694839805_nAfter spending the last month focusing mainly on Austin City Limits, I’m taking a few day to check back in on all the old reliables before we go full throttle on Fun Fun Fun Fest.  I’ve already posted one tune from the up-coming releases by Beyond is Beyond is Beyond, and here I am with a tune from The Entrance Band.  While I can definitely sense the psych nod going on the way the guitar is being utilized, there’s something quite different in the delivery of the vocals themselves.   They manage to maintain a different level of spirituality, and I can’t wait for you all to hear what’s happening on their full length, Face the Sun.  It’s out on November 19th, and will definitely be something you’ll need in your collection to wrap up 2013.

Drifting Dream from White Birds

whitebirdsI’ve been keeping a close eye on White Birds, and admittedly, I never quite know what I’m going to get.  Sometimes the music created is so intimate, other times it’s interestingly abstract, but this new track that just popped up yesterday is too mesmerizing to miss.  I could just listen to the vocals over and over, soaring, quietly.  There’s a tribal quality in the percussion, which makes creates a really dense ethereal haunt throughout.  I’m not sure what or if this will be released, just think you should enjoy such a ridiculously good song; I’d be responsible for ruining your day if I didn’t let you hear it!

New Pop from Charlie Big Time

charlieIt says a lot when a band can claim the likes of Matinee and Cloudberry as their past homes, and with the move to Jigsaw, Charlie Big Time continue their foray into the annals of great indie pop labels. Next week you’ll be able to grab the Sale or Return EP from the band, and this first listen is really something special.  There’s a an airy quality to the song, which counteracts with the cascading distorted guitar.  The vocals are definitely focused on Matthew’s performance, but Beth also does a great job of adding just the right backing vocals, leaving listeners with a fine slice of pop to get you through your day.

Another Rocker from Radioactivity

radioactivity3x372Just last week I was tossing one of the great new songs from Radioactivity your way, and less than a few days later, the band have unleashed another kicking tune for your ears. I love the gritty sound of this tune, even though it still has this underlying pop sensibility to it; you wouldn’t expect anything less from two ex-Marked Men memebers would you? Not only does this capture the sound that I’ve been enthralled with (again) over the last few years, but we can get a big Texas shout out going here.  Their self-titled LP comes out next week via Dirtnap Records…and rumor has it that another one is right around the corner.

One More New One from Audacity

tumblr_inline_mj08bavIaS1qz4rgpWasn’t it just last week I posted one of the latest singles from Audacity?  Well, that was from a split release, but this new tune is from their brand new LP!  The album is titled Butter Knife, and it’ll see a release by Suicide Squeeze on October 29th.  These guys always seem to energetic in their songwriting, yet, like all good punk, it’s got a nice dosage of hooks to grab your ears.  If you listen to this track, you get the feeling that big things are in the making for the band, as you’ll find a hard time ignoring just how good the track is.  One of my favorite acts of the moment!

Poppy Tune from The So So Glos

383997_10150390708559738_62209039737_8404542_442126120_nWe’ve been fans for some time of The So So Glos, and that was cemented by my time spent listening to their phenomenal debut, Blowout.  It seems that some hard-working individuals have allowed them some free studio time to record a track of their liking, and the result seems like its a good fit.  Through their short time, they’ve grown increasingly softer on the ears…meaning that their brash style has sort of begun to fade.  That being said, it’s clear that some bands are meant to move on in that way, as this song offers a glimpse to just how great things sound when all the pieces come together. Give it a listen.

Another Tune from Traams

919107_582153298485281_1428211538_oOne of the things I definitely appreciate, yet often forget, is that I’m subscribed to so many different sites and what not, that I often get songs sent to me without asking.  Other than free tunes, why would I like this? It reminds me that I occasionally, only occasionally (!), forget about tunes I really dig. So, I bring you back to Traams. The group recently released Grin via FatCat Records, and I think you should get your rock on with these dudes today…then you can go pick up your copy.  It’s a pretty simple rock tune, and I mean that in a good way, as I like my jams straight forward.  If they’re not on your radar by now, they should be!
