bodypartsYou guys getting tired of us raving about Body Parts? Well, too bad!  I like the music this group’s pushing right now, blending little bits of dance-tastic beats along with great pop sensibility.  This song’s great, using these touches of jagged guitars and forceful percussion to push the pace of the track, all the while holding onto some high octave harmonies.  The band’s been building quite a name for themselves, which is fitting with their debut, Fire Dream, set for release on October 29th via Father/Daughter Records.  It’s been awhile since I’ve thought about taking things out to the dance floor in hopes of shaking it, but yes, this song is definitely dance-floor ready.

Austin, The Return of Art Disaster!

ARTDISASTERNo16_october3rd_red7+holymountain (5)Every year as the city, and our visitors, gear up for ACL Fest, there’s something special that always spotlights the city’s talents, reminding us that we’ve got quite a bit of talent here in town.  Art Disaster has been going on for a few years, and we’re happy to be one of the sponsors for this event.  You’ll have two venues , Red 7 and Holy Mountain, offering great bands like Driver Friendly, Good Field and The Black and White Years, not to mention drinks and the cool people of A-town milling all about, including us! If you RSVP, you can get in to see the all the acts for a measly $3.  Pretty much no excuse for you guys since it’s cheap, and you already took off Friday for the festival.

Southern Ballad from Leif Vollebekk

utre_LeifCover_2As we move into cooler temperatures, it’s time for the sad bastard in me to break out the whiskey and let the more melancholy tunes of the world make their way onto my stereo.  One of the artists I’ll be waiting for is Leif Vollebekk, who has just signed on to Missing Piece Records for the release of his next album, North Americana.  There’s an old-school innocence to what he’s doing, writing great lyrics to accompany the down-trodden tunes that yank at your heartstrings.  That album will hit early next year, but you can also download an awesome Borrowed Time EP featuring covers and the first single from his record, which we’ve got below.

More New Music from Jeremy Jay

JeremyJayLondonTreesI’ve got some unfortunate new folks.  Jeremy Jay‘s new LP, Abandoned Apartments, has now been pushed to January 24th, rather than the initially reported November due date.  But, that means we have more time to enjoy the tasty new single he’s putting out today.  Again, there’s a shimmering synth mood that runs the track, while Jeremy’s softened voice rest gently atop.  It’s funny, I think if you sped the track up, you’d have a nice little club hit, but I appreciate the sensitive approach Jay takes instead.  Just another reason for us all to look forward to 2014.

Out This Week: The Proctors: Everlasting Light

proctorsSeeing as the fall is full of releases galore, perhaps it’s best if I opted to occasionally highlight a record that might not get tons of attention otherwise.  For me, a record I grabbed last week that you should spend all your time with comes from The Proctors.  It’s titled Everlasting Light, and it’s just this incredible piece of guitar pop that I can’t escape right now.  Every song takes a light-hearted tone, pulling at you emotionally throughout, embedding itself within your soul. I can’t say enough great things about this record, so scour your local record store to see if you can get your hands on it; Shelflife Records unfortunately sold out because it’s that good.

More New Music from Wymond Miles

wymondmiles_studioshoot_jch_3I imagine it’s pretty hard to break away from the sound you’re known for curating, thus why I’ve been pretty impressed with the music Wymond Miles has been pushing outside of his other band, Fresh & Onlys.  On his latest single, I hear a synth-laden dream of a track, seemingly aligned with the likes of Jeremy Jay.  Even more impressive is the control he has over his vocals, reaching levels I hadn’t expected. His newest effort, Cut Yourself Free, will see a release date of October 15th via Sacred Bones.

The Most Underrated Band at ACL

There’s probably tons of bands showing up at Austin City Limits this year who feel like they’re spot in the line-up might not be what they deserve, but I think in the case of Pinback, the festival organizers got this one right.  Sure, you’ve got bands like the Cure and Depeche Mode who’ve obviously earned their spot, but I don’t think anyone deserves a midday slot (or higher) more than Pinback.

The group has released 5 albums and a slew of EPs in their 15-year-spanning career; my personal favorite is Blue Screen Life.  They’ve got a sound that probably falls in line with well orchestrated math rock, though they also have a tendency to wrap their instrumentalist inclinations around beautifully crafted melodies.  One minute they’ll have your feet tapping and your head lightly bobbing, then they’ll turn it around by calming things down with great harmonies.  There’s not a lot of bands who can cover their musical territory either, having worked hard to move in and out of various genres under the indie realm.  Plus, the guys involved are in various other bands such as Goblin Cock and Three Mile Pilot, so you’re not likely to find a band with such an incredible pedigree, including a few of the headliners!

They play both Fridays at 3:30 on the Bud Light Stage.  Here’s a jam.

I’m going to beg you to come to this show. I absolutely love the Terry Malts and their no bullshit live shows.  They’ve come through town before, but their return to Austin comes on the heels of their latest release, Nobody Realizes This is Nowhere (Slumberland Records). It’s just another excellent record that deserves a huge audience, so be part of that on Thursday night.  If you play your cards right, you’ll also be treated to excellent sets by locals New Arrows and Shivery Shakes (who just finished recording their own LP!)  Great bands deserve great audiences so they can put on great shows…come be part of it.

Quiet Beauty from Faint Wild Light

coverFor me, Tuesdays are great for reflection, and what better way to reflect on the world than to listen to a piece of carefully crafted music.  This new single from Faint Wild Light popped up recently, and sadly, I haven’t seen too many people give it the deserved attention I want to toss its way.  The self-titled album from the songwriter is this slow-moving sound that encapsulates what one would expect on a quiet jaunt through some wilderness.  It’s moving thematically, not just sonically, which is always important when taking the slower turn down the musical lane.  The album is out now via Digitalis Recordings.

Indie Pop Fix with The Moments

themomentsYou all know my appreciation for great indiepop, so what better way to get this week going than to offer up a catch tune from the genre.  I’m sure I missed this track when it originally came back this summer, but why not share the wonder of The Moments with you.  They put out their Short Trip EP, and this lead single is too good to miss; it’s got an inherent hook that stems from the way the guitars bounce the groove off listeners.  Topping it all off with a soft vocal only adds to the indiepop appeal.  Hope you’ll enjoy.
