New Album from Twin Library

twinlibraryI like to spend my weekend searching the old Interwebs for great music that a lot of people have ignored, and I didn’t have to go too far to find Twin Library, who I’ve talked about before.  The group quietly released They Were Marked as Targets this weekend, and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed spinning the record over the last few hours.  It’s really subtle indie rock with quiet melodies and memorable lyrics, making the perfect soundtrack for the gently sweeping change in Fall weather.  The band has been kind enough to offer up the album for the PWYW price, and as always, we suggest you donate something to keep great music coming our way.

Dreamy Tune from Big Deal

bigdealIt’s often hard for bands to grab a foothold in the United States, but after spending some time with the most recent Big Deal record, I think it’s only fair that I offer up their new single to you guys.  June Gloom was released earlier this summer on Mute; it offers this clever blend of traditional male/female indie rock with a coat of that new shoegaze tradition.  It’s both loud and restrained at once, providing listeners a chance to smile while they’re battered with walls of noise.  Take a chance on these guys; you won’t be let down.

Soliti Music Sign Gim Kordon

V__3F9BI’m always down to support our friends over at Soliti Music, especially because it helps us work on our global view of music.  The Finnish label has just signed their very first act to speak in their native tongue, Gim Kordon.  They’ve got a track floating around today to celebrate the signing, indicating where the band might be going with their debut in 2014.  They’ve dropped names like Dino Jr. and Sonic Youth,  and while I can see those, something here definitely smells of Superchunk too.  Sure, I don’t understand a single word, but sometimes it’s just the music that moves you!

Striking Tune from Lonesome Leash

lonseomMy first spin through with the newest single from Lonesome Leash took me up and down, which is perhaps as Walt would want it to go.  His project has just released the One Foot in Front of the Other EP, and this song has to be one of the standouts.  It begins with a circus-like bit of accordion, moving into a troubadour stomp; it reminds me of a more sonically expansive Will Johnson effort, using a throaty vocal to pull in the listener.  Lucky for those of us in Austin, he’ll be popping up on Sunday, September 29th at the Owl.  If you’re not here, that’s okay, he’s still an artist that should be on your radar.

La Luz Continues to Make Waves

La_Luz_3The four ladies of La Luz have been making waves for well over a year now, at least on our radar.  They continue their meteoric rise with their latest single, which is the second hit from It’s Alive; the album will be released by Hardly Art on October 15th.  On this latest track, I like the fact that girl’s don’t just fill up all the space with forced lyrics, rather letting their musicianship speak for itself throughout the latter half of the track.  It’s a display that should have the ears of everyone out there listening, as the group continues to make a headstrong push towards the top of the indie world.

Pop Rock from Piskie Sits

piskiesitsIf you’re like me, growing up in the 90s really defined who I am as a listener; I always think first to that time period when thinking of how to make nods to acts I dig.  In the case of Piskie Sits, I don’t think there’s one particular thing that makes me look back over a decade, especially since the Malkmus shout is very much alive in the now.  All I can say is that I can picture myself bouncing and rocking to this hit with all my friends back in the day; it makes it all the more special that it still resonates today!  The group will release Creature Feature via Philophobia in October.

New Music from Blessed Feathers

blessedfeathersWe’ve all got tastes that go all over the place, so why not indulge ourselves and travel that way with Blessed Feathers who offer up the softer side of Wisconsin.  One reason to take note is that the person who produced the group’s record is Kevin McMahon, who has the Walkmen and Real Estate under his belt, so you know the songs are going to sound beautiful.  But, producers can’t work without great songs, and I’m pretty sure you could file this away as such, offering gentle melodies and a wonderful female backing vocal, all servicing the focal point of Donivan Berube’s voice. The band will release Order of the Arrow on November 5th, featuring this hit.

Download the New Single from ODESZA

artworks-000057705660-fz57u7-t500x500I figure if we want to cover music, we should probably try to cover all of it, right? This new track from ODESZA isn’t my typical fair, as it’s mostly, if not entirely samples, but there’s something about it that’s really caught my attention. I like the rising action of the track, yet it holds back not completely giving into the need for a dropped beat that explodes in your ears.  Also, I like the careful little glitches placed here and there, encouraging me to listen actively, which is how it should be.  You can pick up the new My Friends Never Die EP tomorrow when it’s released!

Show Preview: Disappears @ Red 7 (9.18)

disappears_zoranorlic

Date Wednesday, September 18th
Location Red 7
Doors 9:00 PM
Tickets $10 from Red 7

Let’s be honest Austin, there’s tons of shows coming and going from here until December, but, I’m going out on a limb and saying that this is definitely a show you cannot miss!  The openers, The Young, are from Austin, so that’s always good to go out and support, but the two co-headliners, Disappears and Weekend, are just ridiculously good.  Both bands have released incredible records (Era and Jinx respectively) within the last couple of months, and both of those albums should pop up on every year-end list, if the music world knows what’s good for it. It’s going to be loud, but it’s going to be beautiful, making Wednesday night’s show something you’ll regret if you don’t find yourself at Red 7.

Dyaln of the Mallard Returns as FRONDS

frondsRemember the dark punk of The Mallard? Well, don’t think that FRONDS is going to sound anything like that just because former member, Dylan Tidyman-Jones, is behind the sounds.  Instead, he’s crafted this incredible dreamy pop album, featuring the song below; it’s a self-titled album that will be out on October 8th by new Castle Face imprint Do Not Disturb.  My ears hear bits of Papercuts, just in the way there’s a shimmering bit of pop lurking beneath the dream-like atmosphere of the tune.  It’s just a really majestic tune that seems perfect to take us all into the weekend.
