Indie Pop Bobbing with The Occasional Flickers

31230_121908194514116_3251031_nThere’s gotta be something in the water in Scotland that encourages the development of indie pop bands.  I can name a handful of bands that are on my all time favorites list, and a growing list of acts that keep pushing exporting great pop records.  My latest discovery is The Occasional Flickers who will soon be releasing their new single on Cloudberry Records.  There’s definitely an homage to early B&S here, with that driving guitar line that fits perfectly with the vocal melody; you’ll find yourself hooked to this track in absolutely no time at all.  Cheers to you Scotland, and your wonderful indie pop exports!

Straight Rocker from Radical Dads

raddads-za800crop2.145244.120753I’ve always liked Radical Dads.  They’re not necessarily trying to reinvent the wheel musically, they’re just focusing on delivering solid rock tunes, much as they did with their first effort Mega Rama.  Now that they’re back, let’s focus on the fact that the group is growing increasingly consistent at providing chugging guitar lines and hooks galore in the vocals.  Not only does this make the band enjoyable, but it illustrates that we’ll all have our hands full when their newest record, Rapid Reality, is released in May by Uninhabitable Mansions.  Sometimes simplicity is the best formula for success.

Lets Have Fun with All Tiny Creatures

alltinycreatures_by_chris_rosenauAt first I didn’t really know what to make of this new jam from All Tiny Creatures, but like all good things, I came around. Sometimes it’s best if we sit back and revel in bands that are just making joyous music.  There’s definitely a hodge-podge of sounds working within it: I hear modern electro-pop and even some eighties guitar riffs.  It’s funny how it all actually fits together in one rad little track.  This tune and more will be on the band’s new record, Dark Clock, which comes out May 28th via Hometapes.  It’ll be interesting to see what they do with a whole album!

ATH & SXSW: 3 to Watch Part 4.

sxsw-&-athSo close! Yet we’re so far away.  Okay, not really…SXSW is officially upon us, and shows are sprouting up all over the place.  Personally, I’m freaking out.  So many incredible bands that I want to see for the first time, and so many more that I would gladly see a hundred times over.  Here’s a list of a few acts that I haven’t actually caught yet, so I’ll be seeing them for the first time…SXSW is the first time to lose your band cherry. New Single from Day Joy

DayJoy5_191340Just a short while ago, Day Joy released their excellent album, Go to Sleep, Mess, which features this great new single.  I like the fact that this tune exepmlifies the diversity in the group’s sound, offering a look at the softer side of the band’s musical approach.  The vocals are really soft on this tune, and there’s no rushing their delivery.  Meanwhile, the backing tracks have some quieted picking going on in the background, all coated in a wash of atmospheric haze.  It’s a long number, with plenty of interesting moments that unfold before your ears…stay tuned to the end to listen to the string arrangement that bookends the tune.

Soulful Swinger from Shannon & the Clams

ShannonAndTheClams1I’m so excited for both Hardly Art and Shannon & the Clams! The two have joined up to release the next record from Shannon and her posse, titled Dreams in the Rat House; it comes out on the label on May 21st.  I’ve long enjoyed Shannon’s work, and not just with the Clams, but with the other projects she’s taken a liking to throughout the years, such as Hunx.  This tune illustrates her penchant for tossing her raspy voice into the mix on an otherwise soul-influenced track; she’s definitely gritty, but also has an incredible range.  I think this is my favorite union of the year so far!

More Buzzsaw Girl Pop from Colleen Green

colleenNot too long ago we brought you the first single from Colleen Green, one of the many great acts on our favorite little label, Hardly Art.  Today we have a new track for you to enjoy, which builds our enthusiasm for her upcoming record, Sock It to Me.  It’s short and sweet, with Colleen rocking her guitar while a synthesized drum beat keep base like a hip little metronome.  I love the quality of her voice on this recording. It has a sugar pop coating to it, but there’s this sultry quality to it that’s totally enchanting.  And, if you close your eyes, it’s like a girl-pop Mike Sniper, which can’t be a bad thing in my eyes.

Swinging Pop from Marching Band

Marching-Band-And-Ive-Never-Seen-Anything-Like-That-e1358266511111Subtle pop never really gets the love it deserves, but I want to reverse that today by tossing out this tune from Marching Band.  The Swedish group recently released their excellent And I’ve Never Seen Anything Like That EP, which I gravitated to based on the collage style of the artwork, but then fell in love with once I heard this lead single.  It’s not going to blow you away with some sort of progressive brilliance, but it’s just a solid pop tune that you can’t ignore.  People don’t write songs like this too often anymore, so I’m glad there’s still someone out there creating crisp, clean pop music.  I hope you enjoy this one folks.

Another Hit from Bloody Amateur

Bloody-Amateur-Press-PicThe more I listen to these tunes from Andy Comer, the more I feel like I won’t be able to escape his self-titled album when it comes out next week via Teen Beat.  On this new tune, it opens with this really basic synthesized drum beat, right before these ringing guitars darkly hunt for vocals.  When Andy comes in, his deep tonal quality creates this feeling of despair, yet there’s still a careful attention to pop crooning.  For me, Bloody Amateur lays somewhere in the realm of post-punk, dark-wave and barroom troubadour…and it all sounds so so good to me.

Stomping Around with Eight Knives

1485956948-1It’s no secret that blues and country are the heart and soul of Tennessee, but you know we like it when bands get down and dirty with that sound.  That’s just what the boys in Eight Knives have decided to do, throwing in some catchy hooks to be sure they don’t escape your attention.  Their album Maiden Names is out now, and it’s just a good old fashioned rock record, filled with energy and just a hint of twang.  Seeing as the whole of Tennessee is tearing things up right now, you best keep your eye out on this Chattanooga boys.
