Noisy Number from Big Deal

jpegIt seems like Big Deal have decided to up the ante on their blend of electronic bedroom pop, choosing this time to add a full line-up that would help flesh out their sound.  Almost from the moment their new single starts, you can feel the buzzsaw guitars and the pounding rhythmic drumming in your ears, pausing ever so briefly to toss a softer moment in between.  It’s a heavy-handed track, but one that’s exciting in its very approach, offering a new look at the London group.  They’ll be releasing their newest album, June Gloom, on June 4th.  Be sure to hold out for the soaring bit of vocal at the end just before the group breaks into a nice little group chant.

Nerdy Pop from Breathe Out

tumblr_inline_mhr0qmRPoH1qz4rgpOur friends over at Art is Hard Records are back at it again, readying a new EP from Breathe Out.  There’s absolutely no way you can escape the delicious pop presentation from this tune, “Dead Friends.” It sort of reminds me of an odd blend between Pavement and early Weezer, but there’s also modern elements that make the group more than a re-hash outfit. The EP is titled Absolute True Love, and at the moment, that’s precisely how I feel about the band at the moment; I can’t ignore such infectious hooks–you can’t either! Enjoy the track.

Free New EP from Body Language

LH-008_BL_GrammarEP.152626In preparation for the release of their new album, Grammar, Body Language have decided to be really cool.  They’re not giving you some slow-loading youtube preview, rather they’re giving you their entire new Grammar EP for FREE!  All you’ve got to do is trade in your trusty email address.  According to the band, the new record continues the band’s experiments with blurring the lines between pop, disco and R&B.  The results are pretty interesting, and I’m particularly interested in the track below.  There’s a central hook, with some carefully placed electronic grooves; it borders just on the edge of “shaking it,” but possibly just more of a toe-tapping head bobber tune. Grab the EP HERE.

Rowdy Rocker from Bad Cop

_epcoverb600.152158I feel like we didn’t bring you enough rock n’ roll last week; so I’m doing my damndest to make up for all that this week.  I wanted to toss out this new (ish) tune from Bad Cop, who are re-releasing their I Can’t Slow Down EP to the masses.  The opening track, “Animal,” is just straight-up rock n’ roll; it’s not garage or punk, just blues-fueled stomping rock.  But, that doesn’t mean you’re not going to find yourself an endearing hook in the chorus, because the Nashville boys give you just that.  The spirit is alive with these boys, and thank goodness for that!

Wake with Kurt Vile

homepage_large.104606d2I can almost assuredly say that by the year’s end, everyone at the ATH offices will have admitted at one point or another that Kurt Vile‘s upcoming record, Wakin on a Pretty Daze, is one of our favorite album’s of the year.  It seems outrageous, I agree, but such is the power Kurt holds over us, especially with this new single he’s just released.  There’s something to his simplicity in songwriting that maximizes his emotional draw between himself and listeners.  It sounds like almost anyone could write these songs, but no one could do it so effectively.  The album is out on April 9th via Matador Records.

Experience Pop Music with June

2325441591-1Stumbling across great finds is always a pleasurable experience, especially when you find something you can really connect with.  My big find of the weekend is June, a Tacoma project that really revolves around one man, Adrian Cosio. He’s just released his album Lost Words & Memories, where he’s occasionally he’s accompanied by Roxanne Choe. It really does sound like a bedroom recording, but in that sense, it also offers a very personal look at the mind of Cosio.  I chose this track because I dug the fuzzed out guitar and the distance between the vocals and my ears.  Go check out his work; see if you dig like I do.

Dance Yrself Clean with Sensual Harassment

1166The most important thing about kicking things off on a Monday morning is to get things going in the right direction, and I think this tune from Sensual Harassment will do just the trick for you.  This Brooklyn duo has a new EP titled Escape From Alpha Draconis coming out on Tuesday (it’s free if you trade your email), and based on this it’s going to be filled with danceable hits to get your weekend parties started.  If you like what you’re hearing, you can check out the band on a brief little tour as they make their way into Austin for a stint at our little festival, SXSW.

Relaxed Pop from Finnmark!

1641599171-1You’d think that based on the name, Finnmark! would be stuck somewhere in Scandanavia, and while the music may be as such, the band itself comes from Leeds.  I can’t really say enough about this single, encouraging me to give the group my full backing, even on just one track.  I love the effortless vocals, matched perfectly by the churning guitars.  Towards the end of the song, my love affair just fell deeper with the vocals stretching to higher pitches. For now, just enjoy this great tune and thank me later.  I’ll keep you posted as I hear more from the band.

Desert Rock from Deconstruction Unit

dunit_colore6d46575a465It’s interesting to see the interest in the heavier side of music again, especially considering the dull releases of late 90s metal.  One of the group’s that recently caught my attention was Deconstruction Unit, due to the group’s history with Jay Reatard.  While the guitar work has a dark-tinged garage feeling to it (bleeding into psychedelia) the vocals have this historic Danzig quality to them, which is fitting with the group’s home near the Arizona desert. They’ll be releasing their Void LP on February 19th via Jolly Dream Records before heading out on the road to tour with Milk Music; they will also be making their way through Austin during SXSW and Chaos in Tejas.

More Noise Drenched Rock N’ Roll from Grave Babies

GBangel3Not too long ago we all got to hear the great “Over and Under Ground” from Grave Babies, but with their new single, “No Fear,” they just continue to show signs of vast improvement.  There’s a deep tonal quality with the vocals, and the tracks is covered in controlled noise.  I think the increased pop element is definitely going to appeal to a wider range, while still holding onto the group’s aesthetics that came with their first EP.  Their new record, Crusher, will be available in stores on February 26th from Hardly Art.
