Garage Rocker from Legendary Wings

One of the many acts in the Dirtnap Records is the recent signee, Legendary Wings.  They’re still out promoting their recent release, Making Paper Roses, which is full of grit and energy.  This is the band’s most recent single, and it displays the garage quality that has endeared the group to punk fans such as myself.  Personally, I love the sound of the guitar on this track, pushed high up in the mix, yet holding onto a balls-out sensibility that soon makes way for the shouted hook of the gang vocal.  Just another solid hit from a band that’s out to kick ass and take some names.

Chilled Out New Vibes from Chromatics

After a long holiday week for many, we need a cool little vibe to get things started, right? Luckily this new track from Chromatics hit yesterday, which definitely hits the mood I’m looking for, using touches of electronics to coat the vocals.  Those of you expecting more from the group might be a little disappointed, as this is just one of a few tracks that Johnny Jewel is adding to the After Dark II compilation he’s putting out via his label Italians Do It Better.  This should help you slowly move your way into the week, but in the best way possible.

Those of you still in town for the holidays are going to be lucky to catch one of the hottest up and coming acts in the indie scene, The Pharmacy.  They’re coming into town to support the release this week of their record, Stoned & Alone.  And, as if it wasn’t enough to catch their hook-y rock n’ roll, you also get some other great acts opening from our great local scene, like The Bad Lovers, Pharaohs, and Foreign Mothers. If you’re in town, and you need to get away from your family for a little bit, this is the perfect excuse to slip away and rock it out.

New Pop Gem from The Very Most

For those of us carefully following friends in the lower indie blogosphere, this track has been all the rage since its release last week.  The tune comes from the esteemed band, The Very Most–one of the great Idaho exports.  They’ve just released the Ununiversalizable Us EP via Little Treasure, which features four new tracks that you can fawn over.  If you’ve got a warm spot in your heart, you’re going to adore the boyish vocal delivery and the easily consumable hooks of the guitar work.  It’s all twee, and it’s all remarkably wonderful.

Show Preview: Generationals @ Mohawk (11.20)

Date Tuesday, November 20th
Location Mohawk
Doors 9:00 PM
Tickets $8 from Mohawk

Okay, so I know a lot of you are trying to get out of town, but you’ve got a great reason to stay behind, just for a few hours.  Two of our favorite acts are coming to play the inside of Mohawk on Tuesday night: Generationals and Races.  Races played a show we sponsored this past summer, and they were incredible, pulling off a set that made us beg for them to come back.  As for Generationals, I can’t say enough about the group.  Their two records Con Law and Actor-Caster are great, and they just release the new Lucky Numbers EP, which is going to guarantee a great gig.  If you can stick around, then plan to show up!

New Indie Pop from Sleeping Policemen

As a person working on getting my own label up and running, I always admire the DIY efforts, especially for small groups like Eardrumspop.  The label has just uploaded their newest single, featuring several gems from German group, Sleeping Policemen.  For me, the big hit of the single is “First Things First,” where the vocals go back and forth between the male and female vocalists, crafting this quick gem that I’ve been jamming to all afternoon.  I have a feeling you indie pop fans are going to scramble to grab this single…but remember to support the artists who’ve crafted such great songs.

New Music from Big Harp

The last time we heard from Big Harp they were touring behind their debut for Saddle Creek Records, but the second album is well on its way.  On first listen to the lead single from that album, Chain Letters, has a more complete sound to it, albeit one that still remains as intimate as their previous work.  There’s always a personal element to the lyrical content, but you can see more dedication to the art of song arrangements and accompaniment here.  It adds a little bit more depth and personality to a group that just needed a slight push to become something special.  The album will be in stores January 22 of next year.

Dark Shoegaze from The Perfect Needle

It’s been a pretty awesome couple of months for Brazil’s The Perfect Needle; they’ve drenched several singles in dark atmospheric haze, and this is just the latest of those singles.  There’s not too much info about the band, other than their country of origin, but both singles really have something to offer listeners.  I’d be careful to listen to this track with the volume turned up too loud, as you’re likely to either bust your speakers or your eardrums.  You’ve been warned folks.

Show Preview: Gentleman Jesse @ Red 7 (11.19) — UPDATE – CANCELLED

Date Monday, November 19th
Location Red 7
Doors 9:00 PM
Tickets CHEAP

Personally, this is one of the best line-ups I’ve seen in some time, with two of my favorite bands blasting into town to rock it out at Red 7 on Monday night.  Kicking off the night are Bad Sports, featuring a line-up split between Austin and North Texas.  They’re like a dirtier version of the Ramones, so you can’t go wrong.  And then, the genius of power-pop takes the stage via Gentleman Jesse & His Men.  The group’s long put out hits that I’ve adored and raved about, and their recent record, Leaving Atlanta, was definitely talked about greatly in our discussion of year-end lists. You only have to work two days this week, right? So why not start it off here.

New Indie Pop from Tripping the Light Fantastic

Man, this band is ridiculously lovely.  You know my affinity for all things indie pop, and lately, Cloudberry Records, so it’s no surprise that the Hamburg group, Tripping the Light Fantastic are making my indie pop day.  They’ve got a single coming out on the label sometime soon, but my discovery allowed me to go back in time and revisit the group’s older work.  It’s been awhile since they’ve put anything out, but if it sounds as good as this, that doesn’t matter.  That opening jangle in the guitar building into the bright explosion of the vocals hooked me immediately, and I’m sure it’s going to be doing the same thing for you!
