Bedroom Guitar Pop from the Bleaders

bleederSimplicity is the name of the game here.  The Bleaders is more or less a one-man project from Chris Leader, crafting these catchy little guitar pop songs in the solitude of his own home.  He just tossed up a nice little track for consumption via Art Is Hard the other day, and it’s definitely worth some listening attention.  There’s a guitar track recorded atop a fuzzy distorted guitar, all the while lamenting Leader’s inability to write songs as good as Brian Wilson.  It’s a basic track, even down to the production, but sometimes those are the tracks that hit the hardest. He’s got tons of other tracks to download, so check out the link above for more catchy tunes.

Introducing Bay Uno

bayunoI so wish I had had this track on Friday evening after the kids had left my hood and gone their merry way home.  As I settled around a fire with friends and some adult beverages, this tune would have been perfectly fitting, just as the cold of Fall barely made its way into Austin.  This New York artist is crafting music that begs for some communal listening; it’s the sort of Americana-inspired folk music that asks you to grab a friend and just enjoy the companionship of great friends.  I expect to hear more like-minded tunes when Bay Uno releases his debut LP some time in the next year.

Love = Hunck

hunckReally been stuck in a musical rut.  Feel like the last few things I posted were all up in the same vein; I love that style, but I needed something a little bit different.  For me, this little drifting piece of pop music from Hunck is perfect to help me overcome my blues.  The London band just have this feeling that provides this chilled out warmth; it’s almost exactly what I was looking for.  I say that, and yet I’ll probably post a bunch more rock and roll songs tomorrow.  For now, just let your day wind to a close with this great little number.

Brand New EP from Scooterbabe

scooterEarlier this summer I brought you a discovery, Scooterbabe, who I hit upon by way of looking into Athens Intensified.  The band often get classified as a noisy indiepop act, and that’s definitely present in their sound, though I also hear other elements like Braid or Promise Ring in their newest EP.  If you know me, you know that all those elements are certainly things I’m interested in, so I’m excited to share a tune with you.  I have a sneaking suspicion that there are others who love this sound as much as I do, so head over to the group’s page now and pick up their new EP, along with a great digital booklet.

AlternaJam from Broadbay

plasticeneIt’s that time of the month when I bring you something tasty from the dudes at Art is Hard Records. This time around, as they near the wrap-up of this year’s Pizza Singles Series, they bring you a free tune from Broadbay.  The band has a foot that’s planted firmly in the annals of 90s guitar rock, though I won’t be complaining.  There’s some soloing from the guitar, steady vocal delivery, and hook that keeps you coming from more.  Tune in, turn up, and drive fast; you’ll have some fun here.

Captured Tracks Signs MOURN

mourn‘Four nerds playing music and shit at the doors of hell.’  That’s right, that’s the band’s self-ascribed motto, which is a pretty bold statement if you’re looking to break into the indie music scene.  It’s even more telling that the band’s made up of a bunch of Spanish teens; that sort of exuberance can’t be captured on tape. Or can it? MOURN have recently signed with Captured Tracks to release their self-titled debut, and only time will tell if they fit into their own self-created mold.  If you listen to the noise they unleash just before the one-minute mark, you might just hear what’s in store down the road. I also suggest going to their bandcamp page for another single that offers a different glimpse of the group.

Austin Spotlight: Keep an Eye on Slow

slowerA few weeks ago I was hanging out at Hotel Vegas to catch Literature (shame you guys weren’t there); I knew most of the bands on the bill, but I hadn’t heard Slow yet.  I was really impressed, particularly with the guitar playing, which was noisy just like it…and you can hear a nice little solo in the middle of this tune.  I feel like it’s our job to keep an eye out on rad bands coming out, and I feel like it’s been kind of humdrum lately.  So, you should definitely keep an eye on this band; they’ll be playing the Fleshlights album release show over at Vegas on November 4th, but be warned, it’ll be loud.  Oh, and this tune is a demo, so don’t get all audiophile on me!

Bored Nothing is Back Too

boardJust last week I was talking about Bitch Prefect, who were in the latest Aussie musical explosion (not that that ever stopped), but in that post I talked about Bored Nothing, who were one of my favorite acts of that grouping.  Somehow, I missed that the band had a new album, Some Songs, ready for release, along with this single that’s below.  While the production is a touch different, it’s still clear that the project holds onto the stylistic touches that gave listeners an intimate experience with the songwriting.  Now that I’m on this tune, I just picked up the LP from Spunk Records, so I can indulge just a bit more.

Show Preview: Screaming Females @ Red 7 (Tonight)

screamingfemalesIt should be no surprise to anyone that we recommend this show to you, as every band that’s gracing the stage tonight has graced our pages on more than one occasion.  Screaming Females are the headliner on the evening, and Marissa Paternoster is probably one of the strongest women in rock n’ roll.  Her voice, her performance, it all comes from a tiny little body, and it’ll blow yo away.  PUJOL deserves some love too, bringing his garage rock stylings with a ferocity and catchiness all his own.  But, just because two huge traveling acts are bringing some noise, doesn’t mean Austin can’t hold its own.  The openers Crooked Bangs and the Midgetmen are two long-standing ATH faves, so please show up early to support our friends.  Tickets will cost you $14 at the door, which opens at 9 PM.

I’m Enjoying a Daydream Waltz

ddwaltsYou come to expect a certain sound from your favorite labels, so I was taken aback when I grabbed this new single from A Daydream Waltz.  It’s one of the latest singles to be released by Art is Hard Records, so you knew I’d be on board, but for an entirely different reason.  I like the melancholic tone of the guitar; it has a bit of a billowing sound as well, which goes even further as the tune progresses.  It’s this perfect bit of pensive pop music, and it’s my jam today.  You can also go and grab the band’s According to Whom EP for the NYP over at their Bandcamp.
