New Music from Nathan K

I was first introduced to Nathan K‘s music while listening to his other group, Stepdad, but now he’s stepped out for just a minute to offer up a brand new album of really mellow tunes.  All these songs stem from time spent with his dying grandfather in the hospital, which clearly makes this a very personal album for him.  Clearly, it’s not the most uplifting affair, but he’s really done an incredible job allowing us a brief view into this experience.  All these songs appear on his release Dishes, with the majority of these tunes recorded late at night on a four-track while he tended to his ailing grandfather.  Sometimes with great tragedy we see great beauty.

Big Wave Riders – Life Less Ordinary

Rating: ★★★★☆

Finnish band Big Wave Riders burst onto the music scene with a pretty solid self-titled EP, and as they’ve spent more time together you can tell that the band’s grown in leaps and bounds.  Life Less Ordinary is an album that evades classification, demonstrating one of those rare acts that’s just going out there to put together the best songs they’ve written and giving them to their fans.

Opener, “Waiting in the Wings” might have a bit of dream-pop swagger to open the number, but as you move into the chorus you’re going to get swept away with the exuberant vocal delivery, sharp, yet backed by soaring touches.  And then in an effort not to replicate themselves too much, they move into “Stuck In Reverse,” which opens with a bit of a funky jam up front, before pulling back ever so slightly to offer club ready lyrics punctuated by a stabbing electronic pulse.  Back to back, these songs might not match, but in the grand scheme of Life Less Ordinary, it’s clear that the group are destined to outlive your genre studies.

The bio page for Big Wave Riders suggests the band are merely out to replicate the styles of their youth, and if that’s the case, I have a feeling that the band spent a lot of time jamming out to the Britpop movement that conquered Europe in the 90s.  One listen “California” and you’ll hear that fuzzed out guitar line with a distant vocal seemingly coming into your ears from a far off place.  It’s catchy; it’s got a groove, but it builds you your anticipation for where they band will go next.  And really, there’s no telling precisely where you’ll end up with this group.

“Sunny Season” is definitely a dream pop track you’d find with a lot of the bands in Europe, using a wash of melodic atmospherics to coat a throbbing bass line.  I will say Treppo’s vocal delivery has a little bit more of a post-punk delivery, giving an edge to the track that you might not have had otherwise.  Still, Life Less Ordinary begs you to move out of your comfort zone and move your expectations to the side.  “Castle in the Air” features an incredible bass line that forces your feet to stomp about beneath your office desk, offering you a nice new-wave bent, but then the song takes off.  The chorus, or what seems like the chorus blasts away into a noisy wall of guitars and vocals being pushed to their limit.  Big Wave Riders never dwell on your preconceived notions, nor their own for that matter, which benefits listeners who want more than just your average album listen.

Band’s like this are bound to succeed, playing on their own terms, playing with all their heart.  You can tell by listening to Life Less Ordinary just how important making music is to the group, just how important music is to the lives of Big Wave Riders.  Listening to this album over and over again, I have a feeling that it will help remind you of that emotion as well.

Girl Pop from Ali Koehler (Vivian Girls/Best Coast)

It seems like every woman ever connected with Vivian Girls likes to keep herself busy, and Ali Koehler isn’t any different from the rest.  She’s recently recorded this nice little gem for Art Is Hard’s Pizza Club, and it’s quite a nice bit of pop.  It’s not a long track by any means, and it doesn’t really need to be, as the hooks come as soon as Ali opens her mouth.  Sure, you’ll find similarities with the other acts she’s been associated with, but this sounds so much sweeter, in an innocent pop songstress sort of way.  Hope you dig it.

New Psych Jangler from Allah Las

A bit ago I brought you a sweet gem from Allah Las, a California group with an homage to the classic psychedelia of their home state.  Well, lucky for you, the group is nearing the release of their self-titled album, which comes out on September 18 via Innovative Leisure.  Again, the group is tossing back their sound, and that guitar sounds so incredible coming through the speakers.  I can’t really see a lot of modern bands giving the sound this kind of classicism, which proves to me that this group really has something special going on in their tunes.  It’s not a rehash; it’s a re-imagining and it sounds great.

More Electro Pop from My Great Ghost

I’ve written about this duo before, but as things heat up here in Austin, I’m always pleased with tracks that demonstrate the lighter side of my personal musical tastes.  My Great Ghost has just released their EP, which should whet your appetite as they work on completing their full length album.  While the beginning of this track seems fairly normal and catchy, it hits harder as the vocals soar a little bit higher and the strength of the beats come through.  This is definitely a group worthy of your attention; be sure to check out their self-titled EP.

New Ear Buster from PAWS

FatCat really has their hand on melodic noise rock from the British Isles.  Not only do they have our favorite The Twilight Sad on their roster, but they’ve just picked up PAWS to release their album, Cokefloat!, on October 9th.  There’s a great bit of exuberance in this track, with a youthful vocal attack dominating the song from the get-go.  I like how things are slowed down just a touch towards the end of the song, giving you time to capture your breath before they blast off in an angst-ridden fashion.  Definitely an exciting track from these Glasgow lads.

New Music from Peace

The great thing about the Internet is that it makes discovering acts a lot easier than it used to be, and lucky for Suicide Squeeze I think they’ve stumbled upon to a real gem.  They’ve just signed Peace, a Vancouver act, and plan to release the band’s album, The World Is Too Much With Us on October 16th.  It has the slightest hints of Fresh and Onlys, with that heavy vocal being the focus, although it’s not exactly in the realm of modern psychedelia. I appreciate the onward stomp of the track with its crashing cymbals propelling the song forward.  Congrats SS, this is going to be a great one.

New Aussie Pop from Bored Nothing

I don’t think my week would be complete here without spending some time forcing my love for all things Australia on you folks.  My latest discovery is Melbourne’s Bored Nothing, who’ve just put this new track up on their site from their Bored Nothing III EP.  One of the things I’m really enjoying about this tune is the slightest rise in the pitch on the vocals; you’ve got to listen closely to hear the switch.  It’s a mellow tune, but it exemplifies the great scene that is currently going on overseas…be it garage rock or bedroom pop, keep it coming if it sounds this ridiculously good.
