New (to me) Tune from Oberon Rose

I really dig this tune, and it’s completely out of nowhere.  Apparently this album, Wunjo, has been floating around for a bit, but it’s just picking up a head of steam as we speak, though there’s not much info out there on the man behind it, Tom Oberon.  Almost every single thing I’ve read tosses out the Kinks and T. Rex, which I see, but the song below for me feels like Eliott Smith—that also makes sense since Elliot was an adamant fan of Beatles/Kinks-era pop tunes.  Regardless of what I’ve found, this song totally owns, and I can’t stop listening to it, or the record for that matter.

New Jam from PUJOL

When we caught PUJOL at SXSW this year I was surprisingly energetically his set came off; he was more punk rock than garage pop.  But, as the date draws near for the release of his United States of Being, which hits on June 5th via Saddle Creek, it seems that he’s going to show a bit more restraint on his recorded material.  There’s a gruffness to his vocal performance, but he’s not banging out the song like when we caught his live set.  This isn’t a bad thing, and if anything, it only ups the ante on his shows…giving audiences a full dosage of energy and pop.  Check out the new single.

Chaos in Tejas Preview: The Clean

We continue our Chaos in Tejas coverage with one of the bands that I’m most excited to see, New Zealand’s The Clean!

Anytime you listen to some jangling garage pop track, or off-beat power pop, the odds are, that band was influenced by the Clean, who’ve been releasing songs since 1981; their first single is the track we’re featuring below.

They didn’t actually release a full-length album until almost a decade into their career, instead compiling tons of singles to release as compilations on the legendary Flying Nun label in their home country.  But, disbanding and focusing on different groups, often incestuous groups with other NZ acts like the Chills, saw them sort of sputter out, barely making the radar outside of their island home.  Hopefully, that all changed when Merge released their album, Mister Pop, a few years back, bringing the band some new fans.

For me, I say start with the Anthology, as that was my first introduction to the band many years ago; it’s got tons of great singles waiting to be your favorite track.  Within those songs you’ll see the energy and wit that defined the group’s sound, leading them to be one of the most revered, yet underappreciated acts, of all time.  I’ve never seen them though, and I know it won’t be the same as watching them back in the day, but just to hear some of these songs live will further complete my life as a music fan.  They’ll definitely be worth your time.

They play at 11 PM at Club Deville on Saturday, June 2nd.

Great New Song from Silver Firs

Sometimes in order to run this site, I have to seek out things other than my inbox (and other than P4k or Stereogum), so I often hit up various site, like I Guess I’m Floating; that’s where I found this wonderful new song from Silver Firs.  There’s more of a haunting indie rock chant associated with this song, rather than actualy lyrics, but the mood of the music is quite affecting.  You can find this jam, and more, when you pick up the self-titled album from this Swiss group.  It’s a casual number, but one that I hope you enjoy.

Show Preview: Plants and Animals @ Lamberts (5/25)

Date Friday, May 25th
Location Lamberts
Doors 1000 pm
Tickets $10 from C3

With all the incredible shows in town on Friday evening, we wanted to make sure you were aware of all our favorite acts, so we got one more great suggestion for you, Plants and Animals.  The Canadian group will be making their way into town to play at Lamberts to support the release of their recent record, The End of That. In my mind, they’ve got this real classic indie rock song, but as the group’s evolved they seem to have taken on the personality of a rocking M. Ward–an interesting twist.  Opening the evening will be Papermoons, so show up early, and don’t talk ’til the band’s off the stage.

Catchy New Indie Pop from The Tins

It doesn’t take too much to get me hooked on indie pop; I like casual melodies and simple hooks.  When I got this new track from The Tins, I definitely got that anxious indie pop feeling…somewhere between The Shins and Avi Buffalo.  It’s perfect tunes to give you that longing feeling as you look out your window onto a bright sunny day.  This is from their Life’s a Gas album, and it’s really got me in the mood to get outside and play.  There’s an innocence throughout the album that’s refreshing, and honestly, it’s sort of like when the Shins changed my life.

Show Preview: Ty Segall/White Fence @ the Mohawk (5/25)

Date Friday, May 25th
Location Mohawk
Doors 800 pm
Tickets $10 from Transmission

Tons of great shows on Friday night, but the one you’ll find me hitting up is Ty Segall and White Fence over at the Mohawk.  Ty’s got to be one of the busiest people in the business, releasing his latest album, Hair, with White Fence just this past month, then turning around to release another as the Ty Segall Band in just a bit.  Garage rock and glory are all his.  It’ll be interesting to see if Tim from White Fence plays a solo set, or if he’s just going to rock with Ty the whole night, or if they’ll trade back and forth.  You can also catch some great acts opening the night up, with Rayon Beach and Useless Eaters kicking things off the right way.  It’s going to be a rock n’ roll fueled night, but this is your friendly reminder to not talk at the show, please.

New Alternative Jam from Corporal

When you get an email referencing music by an actor, I admit I get a little bit skeptical. But, for some reason, I just want to hear more of this band Corporal, featuring actor Michael Shannon.  They’ve just released their record, Glory, and have plans for a new 7″ coming your way this summer.  There’s an off-kilter alternative feel to these dudes, and it’s got this familiar feeling that’s both nostalgic and refreshing.  But, don’t think of it as run-of-the-mill jams, they’ve got a touch all their own…for evidence just check out the rushed chorus on the track below.  It’s nice to know at least some actors have other skills besides the big screen.

JBM – Stray Ashes

Rating: ★★★☆☆

Truly heartfelt emotion is difficult to insert into a song, but it seems that Jesse Marchant, aka JBM, really excels in this sphere of the musical world.  His newest album, Stray Ashes (Western Vinyl) is soaked with emotion, and a lot of that has to do with Marchant’s voice, but he also implements careful accents to each song, giving listeners with an active ear pure joy.

Make no mistake about it, listening to Stray Ashes is probably going to leave you in a sullen/somber mood; there’s very few tracks that could even be described as upbeat, but that’s what will enable listeners to completely lose themselves in the work of Marchant. “Only Now,” which is a piano driven tune, is one of the few numbers on the record that I could see as even remotely light-hearted, and that revolved around the mood created by the pounding piano (and the brief drill of the snare drum). Still, Marchant’s vocals do their best to sway you away from feeling light-hearted; it’s as if he wants you to sink into the tracks, just as he dove into writing them, lost in his own world.  “Forests” is the other tune that I feel has a brighter quality.  I really enjoy the opening guitar line, and the way it sort of trickles in and out of your consciousness as you go to focus on Jesse’s voice; this song is my personal favorite.

Clearly, JBM‘s art is personal; you don’t write songs of this sort without completely investing your soul in the composition.  So when listening, it’s hard not to look deep inside of these songs, and yet close examination just lets you lose yourself in the construction of the song.  For instance, the opener, “Ferry” has this shaker that comes in and out of the track, then disappears, only to be replaced by a thinly veiled backing vocal.  Each time I listen, I try to search to see where, or if, they overlap, and each time, I’m more and more involved in the track; well played Jesse Marchant.  This a theme throughout the entirety of Stray Ashes, which is what helps you escape the occasionally monotonous tones of Jesse’s voice, which, by the way, I can’t entirely place.  It’s definitely familiar and been referenced to Jim James, but I’m not sure that’s what I’m thinking.  Anyways, aside, aside. Even the gently strummed tracks like “You Always Keep Around” or “Crooked Branches” have these faint flourishes (slide guitar, random percussion, etc) that are barely audible, but they’ll guide you to the immeasurable joy you’ll take out of each individual song; I can attest to this.

Initially, I couldn’t get into Stray Ashes as a whole.  It had some standout moments, but I wasn’t sold entirely on Jesse Marchant’s voice (might not be still).  However, the wonderful thing I discovered about JBM, as I’ve alluded to, is that he has the innate knack to draw you in emotionally with the song itself, then bring you in deeper with those extra touches that only come from truly gifted songwriters.  Each time I listen to a track, I immediately play it again to see if I heard what I thought I heard initially, and in the end, I find myself falling aimlessly into the song, and into the record itself.

New(ish) Tunes from Veronica Falls

After releasing their self-titled album on Slumberland Records last fall, Veronica Falls was quick to return to the fold, still rocking out with the same label.  In quick succession they’ve turned around to complete a new 7″, which you can pick up right HERE.  It’s definitely got that 90s pop nostalgia, with brightly swirling guitars and a vocal performance (both male and female) that’s youthful and relaxed.  These are the kind of songs that made us fall in love with the group, so give the band a chance to warm your heart.
