I love to wrap up the year later than most, mostly because my real job always has me swimming against the current. But, nonetheless, I’ve got a solid list of the records I loved this year…and you’ll notice a lot of the same stuff as my peers, with maybe a few tweaks here and there to throw my own flare into it. Not really sure how to write an intro into something that seems so opinion-based, so here’s the list of records you should already have purchased if you come to this site frequently!

Just when we thought the year was dragging to a close, we managed to find enough hits to fall in love with and make you a proper playlist! We even have a few of the tracks we covered from Maneater and Boyracer missing, so be sure to check those out. I loved the opening song from Prism Shores; it’s definitely a bright spot on last week, along with the reemergence of Mogwai on the scene. We managed to get in some Austin love for Whalers and Gus Baldwin and the Sketch, not to mentioned representing for the local festival with Levitation interviews from Hello Mary and the Strange Lot. Plus, our pal Michael Maly was able to swing some coverage for Air‘s 25th Anniversary performance of Moon Safari, giving me a chance to slide “Sexy Boy” into yet another playlist. Once Home No Longer made huge waves among all the fans of the softened brand of indiepop; it had charms galore, offering up great guitar sounds and comfort. On Mt. Misery‘s follow-up LP, you’re going to get a continuance of their sound. “Hey” is a bold opening statement, kicking off with an emphatic vocal punch that reminded me of some of the early Lodger tunes; the chorus opens up with smooth backing vocals to warm you over. It’s the big focus on shining melodies and strong syllabic deliveries that fill the entirety of Love In Mind; I love tracks like “YBP” that encourage a little bit of playfulness in the overall construction, setting up some nice little treats for the listener. Just imagine yourself falling in love at the intersection of Teenage Fanclub and the Lucksmiths, and that’s right where they hit you. Stream the whole new LP below, courtesy of Prefect Records!

We crushed the coverage last week; we had some ACL coverage as well as some Sigur Ros notes from their Austin show. But, we also covered a solid 28 tracks, 26 of which made the cut on our Last Week’s Jams (the new Boyracer and Rocky Lorelei can only be found on the site). A new track from the Serfs is still living rent-free in my brain, while I discovered just how much I’m enjoying Kim Deal‘s new solo stuff. That doesn’t even scratch the surface, as there were several Texas’ acts like Pets and Trauma Ray getting some new jams out. I will admit, perhaps I overdid it, but eh, you love the new stuff right? Cool. Stream it then.

If you woke up today feeling like the world has you down (I hope that’s not the case), then might we turn you onto the latest from Mt. Misery; they offer up their new single like flowery breeze, blowing through your room and making everything feel absolutely refreshing. It’s like if Teenage Fanclub and the Lucksmiths had a beautiful new born baby together, it would sound exactly like this, mixing bits of both bands to create this swirl of pop music that’s almost too charming to be true. Once you’ve had a listen, you’ll know why we’re saving a spot for the group’s new Love In Mind LP, out on November 1st via Prefect Records.

Just because it was a short week doesn’t mean we couldn’t cover a whole lot of brand new music, especially since there were some unexpected returns that we didn’t know were coming, like new jams from The Green Child and The Innocence Mission. More recent favorites dropped some solid tracks for us, so check in with the latest from Best Bets, Naked Roommate and Mo Dotti. But, don’t just think it was all bangers, with the softer side coming through via Adrian Marner and Tom Emlyn. And, be sure to check in with that new Forceghost, who I’d like to apologize to for misspelling the name of their Recycled Hearts release; sorry my friends! Just press play and enjoy!

Mt Misery Share Waking Up Single

There’s not a whole lot better in this world than a cool late Summer breeze blowing through with a new Mt. Misery tune on the winds. After popping back in last month with a new single, they’re at it again, sneaking in a really melodic jangler that opens the door to the Fall season. Something about their craft this go-round feels so light and refreshing, sort of a cleanse of the past months. And, like all great things, this one comes with the news that there’s a new LP just around the corner, offering up promising pop sounds that will wrap up our year.

After a brief vacation, I apparently over-indulged while RayRay was out on the town, hitting up nearly 30+ songs, and some of those, like the premiere we ran for legendary Refrigerator, aren’t even on streaming platforms, so you have to go find em’ on the site! Austin had a big week, with acts like Club Coma, Liz Burrito, Voxtrot, Font and Letting Up Despite Great Faults throwing out some new jams. But, don’t think San Francisco/Oakland were game for being overshadowed, with Tony Jay, Sad Eyed Beatniks, Chime School, Fake Fruit and Parallel all dropping new jams. So, this is nearly 2 hours of really really great music, so sit back, press play, and escape the madness, albeit for a brief moment.

Mt Misery Return with Lunch Break

If you didn’t get into Mt. Misery back when they dropped the phenomenal Once Home No Longer, then now is your perfect chance to dive headfirst into one of the great pop acts from the UK. Today, they’re dropping a brand new single as they prepare for a brief UK tour with Lightheaded (Slumberland). Immediately, the brightness of the guitars peek through like the sun creeping through the slits in your windowpanes. There’s a steady bounce that adds a certain snappiness that’s adds a bit of a hook factor, though they’re careful not to overindulge in the sweetness. To be fair, it does have some nostalgic feels, akin to the Lucksmiths, with just a bit more boogie to it. Such a joy to hear the band back at it, and hopefully this tour gets them excited to record more!

Last Week’s Jams, Today (8.15 – 8.19)

Is it just me, or does it seem like there’s an overabundance of great music coming out as of late? I mean, I fell in love with at least a half dozen new tracks last week, and that’s just the one’s I was able to get up on the site. At the end of the day, I’m still blown away by that Mo Troper tune; I was a fan before but these last two tracks are out of this world good. Ribbon Stage dropped another hit we couldn’t escape running, plus there’s some old ATH standbys like Michael Beach, the Beths and Free Time (all Oceanic acts no less!). Press play, and sink into that Monday vibe.
