Quinquis Drops Dec’h Video

When pouring through my inbox, I always rush to open recognizable names, like Quinquis; today there’s a new single from the forthcoming Eor LP, which has already gotten some love on the site. On this new single, the electronica is used as a narrative voice, rather than some overly-propulsive dance groove; I love that it’s almost barely crawling along, with this intense pulse working just beneath the surface. Using that groove, there’s this natural tension that holds your attention throughout, with whispered vocal notes moving carefully while these sterile synapses fire off intermittently. It’s an entirely different approach, continuously building the visual and sonic arts; the new LP is out on May 9th via Mute.

Liars Announce Vinyl Reissue Series + Share New Video

This news has been floating around for a few days, but I really just wanted an excuse to post about my favorite Liars record. The band have announced they’ll be giving their back catalog the reissue treatment, though they’ll be doing it with recycled vinyl, which sounds like the right move considering all those toss away Adele record sitting at Target. While I know the band is predominantly Angus’ project nowadays, They Threw Us All in the Trench and Stuck a Monument on Top is a pretty spotless debut illustrating how incredible the group were. The reissue of this LP is out on July 22.

Liars Announce The Apple Drop

I really wonder if we’ll all look back sometime and realize just how incredible the shape-shifting ways of Angus and Liars truly was; I know thinking back on They Threw Us All in a Trench… that I couldn’t have imagined where the band would have ended up some 20 years later. Still, I have a soft spot for Angus’ approach, and this round it seems he embraced collaboration in the earliest stage, pulling in jazz drummers and multi-instrumentalists to fill out the soundscape he’s envisioned. The song operates with this throbbing heartbeat, darkened by synth notes and Angus’ haunting delivery, but as it unwinds, drumming becomes erratic in nature, off-beat even at times…every stone overturned reveals a new musical perspective. Personally, the melodic vocals just after the 2 minute mark are my personal highlight here…but that’s just basic old me. This tune appears on The Apple Drop, the new LP hitting on August 6th via Mute.

Another Track from Josh T. Pearson

I’m always on a Josh T. Pearson kick, though admittedly that’s mostly been from that other band he was in back in the day. That being said, there’s a lot of promise from what we’ve heard off his forthcoming The Straight Hits. Opening moments of the tune have Josh carrying his distinctive vocal drawl, but always one to push the envelope, it stretches near falsetto around the 1.30 mark. Something about the keyboard sound almost makes this track playful, and I love the way he swirls the vocals in and out of the front of the mix. This new LP will drop on April 13th via Mute.

Looper Offer New Music

bloopWhile Looper is busy prepping the release of their 5 CD box set, These Things, it would be a shame if people didn’t realize that the set includes Offgrid: Offline, which is a brand new album.  They’ve unleashed one of the tracks off that new piece, and it’s exactly what I’ve come to expect from the group; there’s layering of samples, but it is all meant to underlie the sweet structured pop that’s been a focal point in the band’s experiments with modern music.  Mute will be releasing the collection on April 14th, and rest assured, I’ll have it in my hands by the end of that day.

Great New Track From Big Deal

jpegBig Deal came onto our radar last year with a ton of solid tracks that we shared with you as soon as we had them.  Today news is coming that the band have even more new music this year and plan on releasing a new EP this summer.  This great new track “Always Boys” is yet another example of the power created by this band.  A slow build up leads to an intense, loud, power driven pop tune.  We hope that you enjoy this one as much as we do.

New EP, Sakura, is coming on July 15th.
