Hearts and Rockets Drop New 7″

I love when Hearts and Rockets drop a new tune, knowing full well that when I press play there’s going to be something infectious that I’m going to spin over and over again. On this new 7″, they’ve got two standouts, though if I’m being honest, I think I’m currently hooked on “Get Bored,” which reminds me a lot of Le Tigre in their early days, bridging some of the gaps between punk rock and electronica. “Best Dressed” is a little more DFA 1979, but with plenty of bite to it, employing that growling bass groove deep inside the mix. Both tunes are available, courtesy of Psychic Hysteria.

Circling Back to Love Burns Latest 7″

Sometimes life can run full-circle, as is the case for Phil Sutton and his project Love Burns. He was part of the original Comet Gain lineup, then moved on to work in various projects like Pale Lights, but now serendipity strikes as his latest 7″ features Rachel Evans, who plays part in the current Comet Gain lineup. All that history aside, these are some of the best songs Sutton has written (even considering the ATH Records supported It Should Have Been Tomorrow). “Dear Carol” is a wonderful duet with Rachel, but that soaring chorus just crushes you under its power; I would live and breathe for that moment alone. Flip it over and you get another swooning pop tune, with Phil embracing dulcet tones atop an encircling jangle, before Evans adds a nice little backing vocal to layer an extra blanket of melody into the track. Both glorious tunes are available from Spinout Nuggets.

The 1981 Announce New 7″

You deserve to crank up your speakers for this one; you’ll want to feel the blast of the riffs melting your face. But, don’t think of the new single from the 1981 as a “one-trick pony,” as it’s definitely more than its power-pop parts. Sure, that’s all in there, particularly if you’re diving into the verses here, but you can find a little bit of jangling brightness and old school alt rock mixing it all up inside. When they turn the sugary sweetness up around the 2:28 mark, you’re going to rush out and grab their new 7″ from Dandy Boy Records…it’ll be out on August 29th.

Will Johnson Joins Magnolia Electric Co for New 7″

Will Johnson looks to be keeping himself fairly busy this year, having just released the excellent Diamond City, and now he’s teaming up with members of Magnolia Electric Co. for a Magnolia & Johnson 7″ and Tour. As the two team up, they’ll release a 7″ version of a Jason Molina track, then flip over to find a Will penned tune; both artists played/wrote together before Molina’s passing, so this seems an apt project. But, today (and yesterday for those on their game), the new team released a version of “The Big Beast” from the 2005 Trials and Errors LP. With Johnson on the vocals, there’s a bit more of a growl to it, encouraging the band to fire up some of those guitars and let things burn behind him. The 7″ comes out this September courtesy of Keeled Scales, with a brief bit of dates confirmed for Texas around the same time!

Kill the Pain and Power Solo Share New Ditty

You’ll recognize the names of Melanie Pain (Nouvelle Vague) and Phoebe Killdeer (together working as Kill the Pain), but I acknowledge that their partners in this new morning jam, Power Solo, are brand new to me. Together, they have united to create this sort of rock-a-billy meets garage punk sound, fueled by Melanie’s penchant for pop music crossing-over into hook-laden territory. I mean, if you catch onto the refrain in the song’s latter half, it begs the questions of “if you wanna have fun?” Well, do you? If so, keep an eye out for the joint venture on 7″ for Crunchy Frog Records, coming at you real soon.

Autogramm Share New 7″

As the year picks up in releases, we’d like to turn your attention towards Vancouver’s Autogramm, who share their new 7″ single with the masses today. Once you dive in, you’ll immediately appreciate the group’s frivolity coursing through things; they operate with this joy that makes their songs instantaneously fun…and in this case, a little anthemic. While there’s an obvious nod to classic punk meets synth pop vibes, they still operate in that modern indie rock territory that embraces antics, like a sharper-edged version of OKGO. On the flip side of their new 7″ is a cover of Diodes “Jenny’s In a Sleep World,” which takes the pogo-style punker and turns it into a space-aged pop tune for the masses. Love how this lot manage to make everything so sing-a-long-able! Their new 7″ is available today via Dirt Cult Records (NA) and Goodwill Records (Europe).

Semihelix Share Two New Singles + Antones Release Show (2.9)

One of our favorite Austin acts is channeling the great radio alternative, so tune in below to the latest hits from Semihelix! You can hear the riotgrrl spirit coursing through these tunes, as Geannie consistently just rips right through these licks and vocal lines with the perfect amount of indifferent cool. Both of these new jams will appear on a fresh 7″ from Bleached Records, and to celebrate this, the band will be hosting a Release Party over at Antones on Sunday evening, and they ask that you join them! That 7″ will hit the masses on Monday, but you can get a sneak preview by playing the tunes below. If you can’t make it, don’t forget to grab the 7″ while supplies are limited!

Video Age Drop Record Shop 7″

As much as I enjoyed Away from the Castle, I think that Video Age might have upped the ante on their songwriting skills with their latest 7″ as they prep for a European tour. This one’s pulling on the jangling string stylings of acts like Lucksmiths, texturing backing vocals that build crest after crest of pop vibes that repeatedly soak the listener in melody. Personally, the change in attitude around the 2 minute mark only adds a sense of effortless cool that I couldn’t pull away from, taking their craft one step beyond. Hope the group have fun while their overseas and come back with more songs like these! That rhymes!

The Gaby’s Announce New 7″ EP

If you run in the cool-kid indie circle, mention of the Gabys yesterday was all over everyone’s timeline, rejoicing in the news that there was a fresh EP on the way. We’ve only got this one track to go off, but it sees them dwelling in that brilliantly mellowed pop realm. There’s a lonesome quality to the guitar lines, trickling and bending ever-so gently, almost weary as they lay down before the vocals. Those vocal notes are pretty near perfect, rising just beneath the ride of the cymbals to offer a calmed resolve that’ll certainly have your pop ears ready for the release of their new 7″; it drops via Fruits and Flowers on August 23rd.

Soot Sprite Share Home Among Your Bones

Having already covered the A side to the new 7″ from UK’s Soot Sprite, it feels apt that we should also share the B side, as that’s now available with the full release out. While “I Went Swimming” has this sharp bite to it, you’ll find “Home Among Your Bones” a bit more like a soothing bit of aloe on a freshly burned bit of skin; it shimmers with warm melody from Elise Cook, while the band build up this little dose of texture give depth to the bedroom pop vibe. They save the loudest bits for the punctuated end, so be sure to stick through until the close, and grab a copy from Specialist Subject!
