The Proctors Return

We’ve seen some tunes over the last year or so popping up from the Proctors, so I had the feeling something new was on the horizon…and apparently that was a new 7″ from the band. The first of the two tracks on the 7″ has this spritely quality, an innate bounce that works its way into your brain as the sharp churning guitars ring around your ears. This is offset by the softness of the vocals, giving the track over to a dreamier tone. The second tune jumps right into the dreamy side of things, stretching the pop appeal over 5 minutes; it’s a nice ballad with this swelling pop sensibility that erupts into joy around the 1.30 mark. These two tracks appear on the new 7″, available now from Shelflife.

The Sour Notes Share New Single

The Sour Notes, always adventurous, have decided they’re going to release their new album one 7″ at a time, and today we’ve got the latest single from the series for you to enjoy. This one should come as no surprise if you listened to their ambitious collection This Is Not Our Music; I mean, if you don’t hear Galaxie 500 in here, I don’t know what you’re thinking. I love the softness of Jared’s voice on this, matched up against the heavy riffs that sort of billow in and out of the mix. It’s the sort of slow churning pop music you wish they had at your middle school dance, so you could fall in love and feel totally cool while doing it. Austin folks can get their hand on the new 7″ on June 13th at Hotel Vegas for the release show!

Fresh Terry Tune

What? You didn’t get enough Terry last year with I’m Terry? Well, lucky for you and I that the band have something new up their sleeve by way of the Who’s Terry? 7“. Pulsing electronics kick the song off, eventually submerging beneath the front of the mix to serve as the song’s heartbeat. Ringing guitars come in, matched in their pace by a steadied vocal delivery that marches you through the track, fading away just enough for a nice little crisp guitar solo. There’s even some faint audio that almost sounds like the band sitting around at practice in the track’s latter half; it’s charming, drawing your ear even closer. At this point, I don’t really see Terry writing a bad tune; they just keep crafting hit after hit; this one drops on Upset the Rhythm on July 19th.

The Suncharms Get Video Treatment

If you’re not part of Slumberland Subscritption Series, you’re in luck, as the label ran a few extra copies of the new 7″ from The Suncharms (and Rat Columns too). Today I want you to give about 5 minutes of your time to the video version of that B-side, which, personally, is probably my favorite of the two tunes. The video is shot in black and white, and mostly comes across as a performance video. But, you ask why I love it? For starters, I adore the scuzzy guitar vibe, heavy yet brimming with these pop melodies through the crackling of my speakers. Take that sound and the video imagery, and things look glum, until you give into the seductive powers of Marcus Palmer’s voice; though deep, it carries this natural kindness. Get a copy over HERE.

Did You Hear the New Comet Gain Single

I’m late to the game on this one, though I’ve known about (and ordered!) this new Comet Gain single for some time, but I’d be remiss if I didn’t encourage you to take a stroll down the road with David Feck and friends. There’s something playful and heartfelt in Feck’s songs, and yet something one could attach to a sort of everyman type; he makes you feel like a friend sharing a story. I love the way he sort of speeds up his lyrics in certain incidents, like he’s racing to get to the point, then drops back to a more casual vibe. I could, and probably more often than not, listen to this band every day. If you’re so inclined, grab the new 7″ from Tapete Records…an LP is to follow next year.

Spin This Tony Jay Tune

I’ve probably told everyone I know about the new Tony Molina record and how much I love it. Now there’s another Tony from California begging for my attention; this time it’s Tony Jay. The San Fran outfit have a slew of recordings beneath their belt, and they’ve readied a new one for us today. It’s a casual bit of bedroom pop that seems timeless; I’m particularly fond of the moments at 1:11 and 2:02 where the rest of the band aid in the chorus. Not only do I hear Tony M, but it sort of reminds me the later Hunx stuff too…clean and simple, but everlasting in your memory. Tony Jay has a brand new lathe cut 7″ available for you right HERE.

Missing Pages Announce New 7″

We’ve been following Stephen Svacina on these pages for some time, be it with Jonly Bonly or Sweet Talk…and now we turn our attention to his latest project Missing Pages. The band are working on their debut LP at the moment, but while we wait, they’re going to tease us with a new 7″ for 12XU. The A-side has this driving guitar line, with Stephen and Garrick working against each other with these sharp chords circling one another like wrestlers about to lock up in the center of the ring. They continue to build up by pulling in additional vocals from bassists Ali, all culminating in my favorite part…the chorus of “it’s a long way down” is the perfect pop moment. Mark Monnone Goes Out Alone

Mark Monnone penned albums take up a great deal of space in my personal collection, so as he ventures out on his own again under the name Monnone Alone it seems like the only appropriate way to end a Friday. Whether or not you fawned over the Lucksmiths, I think any fan of pop music would have a difficult time turning their ear away from these two gems. The A-side on this new 7″ definitely has its way with melody, though the volume is quite forceful, allowing the rock n’ roll underbelly to surge through your walls. On the B-side you get more of a playful charm, a touch more light-hearted, though equally as emotively striking. Luckily, these two tracks come with a promise of a new LP in 2019.

Pete Astor Has a New Single

Every time Pete Astor releases something new I sort of fawn and swoon. Today was one such day, as I realized that Pete has a new 7″ on the way, just a few short months after he dropped the powerful One for the Ghost. He seems to be taking one from the pages of label mate Tony Molina, maximizing his songwriting in a mere minute and a half. That guitar hints at my mom’s tape collection, harkening back to the glory days of classic rock n’ roll in the 60s. But, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the entrance of Pam Berry (of Black Tambourine fame?) on vocals to soften the vibe and pull on those heart strings. Damn all these great pop songwriters and their 1.5 minute gems! Alas, the new 7″ comes out October 7th via WIAIWYA.

New Me Prep 7″ for Bleeding Gold

If you haven’t heard of New Me yet, that’s perfectly okay as the band’s fairly fresh to the scene. The band are currently in promotion road, as they have a 7″ coming your way fair soon, so we figured we’d give you a sneak peak. Upon pressing play, you’re met with a few quick sections of electronic pulses just before the guitars begin to dance around your eardrums. And then singer Jakob makes his presence known, presenting his deepened tones that at times share similarities with Spencer Krug. His performance aids to the dreamy element, almost haunting the track in a sense as it tries to keep pace with the frantic pace of the rhythm section. Energetic and dark, you’ll want to grab this 7″ before its gone; grab it HERE from Bleeding Gold before the August 31st release date.
