Bleak Streak Share Dark + Drop S/T LP

Swedish outfit Bleak Streak weren’t on my radar until this track came our way, and now I’m devouring their new S/T LP. Every time I listen through the single we’re sharing below, it reminds me of a ramshackle version of Galaxie 500; the jangling pop dreaminess works throughout, though you’d likely feel as if the band over-indulged in caffeine, making some of the noisier parts pop a bit more instead of the warming to the melodic center. You’ll still find that there’s this cheerful sentiment that pervades the entirety of the tune, encouraging you to also dive into the band’s new record today!

The Chairman Dances Release Evening Song

The last month or so, we’ve made it a point to direct you towards the narrative pop stylings from Philly’s The Chairman Dances; they’ve officially released Evening Song, so we’d like to give you one last glimpse at the world you can open up by pressing play. The entirety of the new record circles around two romantic partners, and on “Faded & Fraying” you get to be there for a bit of their earliest interactions, with Chris visiting Maggie’s apartment. I loved this tune for its more traditional folk appeal, whilst still using great arrangement pieces to kind of allow the song to rise and fall in the storytelling; it’s a tactic that few can accomplish like The Chairman Dances. JW Francis Shares Feel It + Drops Sunshine

You’re possibly browsing the net, looking for something to download and enjoy today, so might I suggest this new JW Francis tune. While some of the tracks on his brand new record, Sunshine, embrace a more pensive fashion, this single’s an absolute joy; it reminds me of a poppier version of the Strokes (or just their last LP as a whole). There’s a stomping nature to the rhythm section, driving the song forward and encouraging the listener to release their inhibitions, riding out with the rhythm and the wind at their back. Eliot Eidelman Shares Silhouette Video

This new Eliot Eidelman song is fantastic; it’s just a generally good song, and saying that, probably doesn’t do the track justice. Maybe I could tell you that Evan from Wand, etc plays and records the tunes, but even then, that’s all hype. So, when I was listening through, and watching the video, I reveled in the performance. The song works with this steady trot, taking a light strum then building it into something that operates with a bit more force and the subtlest backing vocal. All good things, but please dive into the video, embrace the fun. Eliot offers up a silliness that, unfortunately, seems rarer these days; he’s joyous whilst still penning a solid tune, and that’s made my day. Sure, the world’s a hellhole and hurtling downward, and while I spend far more time on that negativity, Eidelman reminded me of the goofball that I hope is all inside of us. And, he did it while offering up a jam you’ll keep coming back to, again and again. This tune is the title track from Silhouette, which drops on January 1st!

Premiere: Palomino Blond Drop Plain View Single

Miami based upstarts Palomino Blond have already released a couple of singles this year leading to some organic buzz building around the band (see “Left” here and “Understand” here). Prior to an album drop on Friday, we are pleased to share this brand new single with you all called “Plain View.” If you know me, my new music tastes trend towards something unique or a refreshing take on an older genre. Both things are true for me on this track as the band take a sort of late 90’s grunge sound and twist it up with heavier, emotional lyrics and a hint of bright shoegaze. I think you’ll dig it.

Palomino Blond will release this as part of a new album entitled You Feel it Too which drops this Friday via Kanine Records. Pre-orders are live now.

Fred Thomas Announces Window in the Rhythm

For as long as I can remember, Fred Thomas has been a part of my indie experience; I think one of my earliest grabs from the college radio station was a promo copy from Saturday Looks Good to Me, though I think his solo album Changer might be one of my favorites. So, like Fred on his new work, I begin to look at the past and how it defines the future, how my tastes or my life has evolved. Thomas, narrates his own journey, and much of what we’re told about Window in the Rhythm is a statement on that reflection; he’s looking back, but even looking the organization of the LP, you can see that things have changed, or grown. His storytelling is very much the same, almost matter-of-fact sincerity, but the musical landscape takes time to breathe, letting you absorb the craft in its entirety. Really looking forward to hearing the rest of this; Window in the Rhythm is out via Polyvinyl this Friday…vinyl to ship later!

2nd Grade Announce Scheduled Explosions

If you were looking to wear a bit smile on your face, we’re betting you’ll have a little help if you press play on these fresh set of tunes from 2nd Grade. These three tracks are blasting rays of sunshine right into your living room, brimming with huge hooks and ringing guitar lines. The jam below feels like what you’d get if you allowed Teenage Fanclub a weekend beach getaway; but you’ll be able to hear a few more tunes by clicking HERE. Might I suggest cranking up “Airlift,” as it might be my favorite of the three singles dropping today. Sounds like Scheduled Explosions is going to be a big big hit; it drops on October 25th via Double Double Whammy.

Stream Young Scum’s Lighter Blue

One of the records we’ve been looking forward to jam, though we may have had a sneak listen, is the latest from Young Scum. They dropped it over the weekend, working under the radar, as the song’s and the band’s fanbase don’t ask for needless Friday release dates! Personally, it only takes the album opener to immediately get you seated for a great jangling pop show. There’s definitely some surprises in here too, like “Limeade,” which is a wonderful ballad that I honestly didn’t expect, but was completely into the more I spent time with the record. You better grab a copy of Lighter Blue right now, before Pretty Olivia run out of copies!

Pinhead Gunpowder Return with UNT

The old punk in me is really excited about a new Pinhead Gunpowder album, which just got announced. Surely you’ll recognize the vocals at the front of this mix, and hopefully you appreciate the ethos they’re punching out. They don’t have an agenda and they’ve made plenty of money over the years, so they’re here just to drop fiery pop-punk hits so hard you’ll have no choice but to sing super loud at the top of your lungs. If there’s one thing I know from listening to the band for nearly 3 decades, it’s that you’re going to have a whole lot of fun cranking this one up to 11. They’ll drop UNT on October 18th via 1-2-3-4 Go Records.

The Green Child Announce Look Familiar LP

If you’ve covered the Australian music scene for the past few decades in any fashion, you’ve likely heard the name Mikey Young; he’s been behind the scenes and in the scene with various acts like Eddy Current, but today, we’re focusing on his work with Raven Mahon (of Grass Widow), as The Green Child. On the new album, Look Familiar, the band began with ideas of both Mikey and Raven, then fleshed them out with new members Alex McFarlane and Shaun Gionis, allowing their psychedelic influences to mix and swirl like some color-based science experiment. In the first minute and a half, you get the casual pulsing pop akin to Broadcast, but as a collector of musical pebbles, I implore you to definitely drop in just before the 2 minute mark. It’s a quick textural shift, livening the track, then building layer upon layer, even adding to the vocals; this lets the song take on more life and spring right through your speakers! Look Familiar is out on November 1st via Upset the Rhythm and Hobbies Galore.
