System Exclusive Share Click Video

I’m a huge sucker for an easy hit, but that’s not what you get when you turn on a System Exclusive tune, like their latest, “Click.” Sputtering electronics and crawling vocals bring you into the track, waiting for the guitars to glide underneath the mix, met by drums and an electronic wash. Ari B’s vocal performance remind me of an early Karen O when she felt super dangerous, yet you can’t pull yourself away here. Throughout, the song moves in and out of its organic nature, letting tension build as it plays with the negative space behind Ari’s voice, always rolling in with this pulsing groove. Really stoked on this tune. Click is out on Mt. St. Mtn.and Le Cepe Records on May 17th, with a big Spring tour working through the US.

Choo Choo la Rouge Announce the Sunshine State

Choo Choo la Rouge isn’t a band that I’m altogether familiar with, though I think I’ll aim to rectify that now that I’m indulging in their fresh single…as I hope you do. Through and through, this is a pop ballad, though strung together with a rolling percussive stomp and a nice acoustic strum. To me, it doesn’t feel too far off from what you might expect from a Jeff Tweedy solo outing, the strum and vocals pushed way out front in charming fashion, while an electronic piano gets to have its say in the absent moments sprinkled throughout. Give this track a listen; The Sunshine State is out April 5th via Kiam Records.

Unwed Sailor Announce Underwater Over There

Having spent my college years in Oklahoma, I have always had an affinity of the work Unwed Sailor (there were only so many weird kids in the state in the 00s). While post-rock stylings of late seem to mostly mimic the quietloudquiet formula, this single has the group operating on more of a vibrant horizon; they’re offering these riffs that seem to rise and fall, like a light Spring shower continuously falling atop your head as the sun shines on in the distance, which seemingly matches up with the visuals from the video that accompanies it; I’m pretty sure that the vid was shot in Eureka Springs too, a nice little nod to those of us who spent time in that part of the country. It’s nice to hear some instrumental jams that just bring a natural warmth to the songwriting. Looking forward to Underwater Over There, out on May 10th via Current Taste.

Kelley Stoltz Returns with Reni’s Car + New LP

Sadly, it sometimes we take our greatest artists for granted, and such is the life I fear for Kelley Stoltz. The songwriter has definitely been lauded, and maybe the fault is mine, so every time I hear new stuff, I circle back and jam out to Stoltz for a few days; I mean, honestly, the dude’s never written a bad tune, that I’ve heard. Hopefully we’re all hope on that train as we await La Fleur, a brand new LP from Kelley, dropping this Summer. For my two cents, there’s something in the songwriting that feels like a mixture between Glenn Donaldson and Robert Pollard, though with a bit more of a psychedelic bend on the guitar vibes. Plus, the song got a cool backstory, as he recants a tale of spending the day in the car of Stone Roses drummer Reni. Sounds like another classic jam if you’re asking me…La Fleur is out on June 7th via Dandy Boy Records/Agitated Records.

Premiere: New Single From Fair Visions

For the last several years Queens based musician Ryan Work has been making some magical music under his recording and artistic moniker Fair Visions. This year, he has designs to release a new full length LP entitled Quite An End, which is due out on May 7th. Prior to that date, Work has just released what is easily my top song of the year so far with this stunning new single called “I Want You, Babe.” As far as progressions go, this thing moves along almost perfectly with a mellow, dreamy beginning as it flow into a slightly more heavy, swirling guitars sound. And those drums… ya it’s a fun one.

 

Johnnie Carwash Share Aha (It’s Ok) Video

Lyon pop outfit Johnnie Carwash have a new record coming out at the end of March, and for my two cents, they’re channeling all the joy one can get from an indiepop tune, albeit with a bit more rambunctiousness. Each verse has this sharp, punctuated vocal delivery that reminds me an awful lot of Love is All, with danceable riffs circling all around the emphatic bursts. It’s a vibrant tune that echoes through your room with a magnitude of joyousness, freeing you momentarily from the constraints of the real world as you celebrate together. Their new LP will be out on March 29th, and we’ll keep you posted!

Get Down With Acid Tongue

Seattle based legends Acid Tongue seem to be one of those groups I can always rely on for a solid rock n roll banger just when I need it. This new track “Acid on the Dance Floor” is hitting all those feels today with some straight up sludgy, psychy, and simple badass sounds. If you’re feeling a little down in the dumps, crank this joint to 11 and enjoy the sheer swamp of it all.

Acid Tongue will be releasing this track as part of their fourth full length LP entitled Acid on the Dance Floor. Pre-orders are live for that one now and it’s due out on April 12th.

Camera Obscura Return! New Album + New Single

How on Earth have we reached 10 years without a Camera Obscura record? This was the news that I wasn’t expecting, though now that I’ve sat with “Big Love” for a minute, I’m definitely celebrating. There’s an immediacy in the tune’s hook, Tracyanne Campbell’s voice is so powerful and distinctive, that you can’t pull away, even as you notice the band have begun to shift the sound a bit. Press info reports that the group have peeled back a bit of the horns and strings, turning towards organs, keys and a bit of swing to boot. One of my favorite things about this tune is that you can hear the shift in a new direction, though the move doesn’t seem outlandish, as the central style of songwriting is totally lurking beneath that slide guitar. Really excited to hear what’s in store on Look to the East, Look to the West, out May 3rd via Merge Records.

Ducks Ltd Share New Single

For a band that’s spent the better part of their career banging out jangling adjacent pop rock, the new Ducks Ltd single should be a bit of a surprise to listeners, though not necessarily a bad thing. For nearly two minutes, the band spend their time in a more casual land, carefully picking on the guitar with little atmospheric flourishes bubbling to the surface occasionally; it’s presented with zero percussive element, but it’s nice to see a little left turn in the midst of an album cycle. Drums do kick in, and the song opens up a bit, but at that point, the vocals become just another layer as the band builds a bit of depth to their tune. Harm’s Way is out February 9th via Carpark Records.

The Reds Pinks & Purples Announce Unwishing Well

If I were to go full Kafka and build myself a chrysalis, I imagine that the fibers of said cocoon would be made up of the entirety of Glenn Donaldson’s musical catalog, particularly his Reds, Pinks & Purples project. Today, there’s the announcement of a new LP, Unwishing Well; I’m stuck here, drawn to this black hole that I know will crush me, grinning like a madman as it draws me into its depths. Let’s put aside the amazing vocals of Donaldson, because if you haven’t cozied up in that blanket, you’re listening to music wrong. Instead, I really focused on the way the song, whilst gentle, has great movement. It begins with an electronic wash working over a light strum, working with Glenn’s voice to sort of nip at your ears. His vocals get punctuated by the slightest thump in volume of the percussion, and as the tune moves, the gentle wash of atmospherics soaks up a more distorted sound; I love the way there’s a layered vocal on the refrain too as the track near’s its end. Honestly, there’s not a damn finer tune than this one. Unwishing Well is out April 12th via Slumberland/Tough Love Records
