Jeff Rosenstock Announces HELLMODE

You can count on the Internet going wild when there’s a new Jeff Rosenstock track that pops up, particularly when it comes to a new album announcement. I wanted to be sure that I was on top of that, as I really love this new single, and have fingers crossed that HELLMODE will be equally as good. This tune drops in perfectly, with the first hint of Jeff’s ability to deliver a hook coming in as he drops a change in the vocals at the 52 second mark; his vocals throughout this song are really the little bits and pieces that sold me here. For all its steady calm, the track doesn’t hesitate to rip up a little bit when you get to the latter half around the 2:52 mark; it sheds the softer piece to add an emphatic growl to the tune’s whole. If you’re into screaming along with your favorite song, this is setting up perfect! Polyvinyl will drop the new LP on September 1st.

Grand Drifter Shares Fresh Pop Hit

You should usually consider the work of the folks at Subjangle to be something charming, which is most certainly the case when it comes to this new single from Italy’s Grand Drifter. One will find an instantly saccharine light jangle in the guitar work, something you might consider akin to early Kings of Convenience. What I love about this track, however, is that there are all these little light flourishes that continue to flesh out the sound as a whole, making it feel like the perfect piece for a sunny day. Listen carefully for little bits of horn and string accompaniment, adding further depth that allows Andrea Calvo to drape his subtle vocals across. Expect Paradise Window to hit this September!

Film School Announce Field; Share Single

Having been banging around for over two decades at this point, it’s been really nice to see Film School continue to grow as artists; they’ve expanded their entire sound, building in these dense textures that add depth and discovery. Today we share “Tape Rewind” with you, kicked off instantly by this heavy eruption of feedback and noise. For all it push towards that side of psychedelic rock, the groove gets locked in, and serves as the gravitational pull for the tune. Things swirl and percussion erupts, but you can’t escape being sucked into the melodic nature of the vocal work; it’s like you’re being sucked in by a tractor beam, indifferent to the cavernous noise all around you. This song is the first single from Field, their new LP for Felte Records, out August 23rd.

Lewsberg Announce Out and About

If you have not purchased your tickets for the Lewsberg train, might we invite you to grab one now, as they’re sure to be one of your favorite bands…plus it’ll make you feel cool for telling your friends you were into it first. Anyways, the Dutch band announce their new LP Out and About today, dropping mixes of two of the tracks that will appear on the record. “Without a Doubt” has this spritely nature to it, just shuffling in the mix as the vocals keep things joyously grounded; it’s the precise brand of no-rock pop that the group excels at crafting. Meanwhile “Communion” feels like a pastor’s sermon delivered by someone who grew up listening to all those early Flying Nun records. Can’t say enough wonderful words about this group; Out and About is out in September; self-released, but US folks can order through 12XU.

A Beacon School Announce First LP in 5 Years

Patrick J Smith has taken some time between his last A Beacon School LP, but he’s ready to put that aside and let us all indulge in yoyo, his brand new record. You get a couple of sneak peeks today, with the sparkling pop of “Potion” sure to grab you with its immediacy and melodic core. “Jon,” on the other hand, is more extravagant, like a mini suite built for the dance club or late night drives under city lights; it carries this extra life force to it that will have you marveling. Both tunes provide a glimpse of what’s to come, letting us know that Smith’s time away from a proper LP might be to our benefit, as both tracks are easily digestible pieces of great pop. yoyo is out on October 13th via Grind Select.

Sonny and the Sunsets Announce Self Awareness Through Macrame

Another bit of great news from one of my favorite songwriters, Sonny Smith. Sonny wrote a majority of the songs, like the one below during the pandemic, then went back and added in friends and touches to make it a proper Sonny and the Sunsets record. I love the light-hearted guitar jangle that bounces throughout this tune, giving off a ray of sunshine and bounce that’s immediately accessible to any old pop fan. Plus, you get some great organ work that adds an extra textural layer of depth to the song, building in extra bits of charm. Self Awareness Through Macrame will be out on September 1st via Rocks In Your Head Records.

New Devendra Banhart Drops

I know my wife and I both have a soft spot for Devendra Banhart; we used to spend hours just cleaning our house (pre-kids) soaking in the airy notes from his warbled voice. Now he has a new LP on the way, and well, it’s going to take a few folks back, which I totally respect. I mean, how many more times can Banhart write in the same place? This go round, it looks like he’s teamed up with the glorious powers of Cate Le Bon to build the tracks for Flying Wig. Our first listen has him living in this post-punk meets 80s radio-croon, almost as if he’s channeling some Bowie bits; it’s an interesting left turn that I didn’t expect, so I’m actually here for it, as the kids say. Flying Wig is out September 22nd via Mexican Summer.

 

Allah-Las Share the Stuff

What is the stuff you ask? To be frank, I don’t quite know what “the stuff” is, but I do know that this cock-sure brood from Allah-Las offers a glimpse at a newer sound for the group. They’re still employing a sound heavy on the work of the riffs, though here, they’re sort of steadied and almost marching to the beat running below. You can’t deny that the band still have the effortless cool locked in here, though it’s nice to see them get one foot out of the pigeonholed psych category. This single comes with the announcement of Zuma 85, their new LP for Innovative Leisure, coming your way on October 13th.

Certain Times Share Spectral, Release Desire

I have made sure you were more than aware of Desire, the brand new LP from Brooklyn’s Certain Times; today is the actual release day, so we’re celebrating by offering a glimpse of another tune, “Spectral.” When listening through the whole of the record, the band’s brand of synth pop plays with the contrast between the dark and playful sides of the genre, with this new single living more in the darkened side, slowed down by the pulse of the tune. You can see this juxtaposed with a track like “Power,” which holds this incredible bounce that pulses and grooves; it’s like Sleigh Bells, but good! All of Desire is filled with tunes bouncing back and forth with catchy groves and textured synth work, so stream the whole thing HERE, or grab it from Double Phantom Records.

American Trappist Share Nobody’s Laughing, Drop Poison Reverse

Today is the day you can immerse yourself in the splendor of the latest LP from Philly’s American Trappist, offering up a solemn bit of slowcore. I love all the space the band leave in this song, letting the emotion just drop through the speakers and seep into your skin. There’s something about it that reminds me of Mazzy Star in the vocals, even with a male lead as opposed to Hope; it has something to do with the way the notes just kind of hang in the air, floating like bubbles, waiting to pop as the melody hits your ears. Give Poison Reverse a listen and let the slow burn start your weekend.
