Laura Jean Announces Amateurs

We’ve gone about five years since hearing from Australia’s Laura Jean, but there’s news of a new LP titled Amateurs, and with it, comes this huge song that I just want on repeat throughout the rest of the day. This new single is just absolutely brilliant, even getting a little help from Aldous Harding and Marlon Williams on backing vocals. For starters, the guitars on this song are so rad; you get a darker guitar dueling with this strummed jangle, fitting them perfectly like a tasty PB&J. Still, the vocal performance throughout is just spot on; there are moments when the vocal texturing is so sublime that you might not spin anything else for the rest of the day. Amateurs will be out via Chapter Music in November!

Bubblegum Lemonade Return with Never Have I Ever EP

It’s been a minute since we’ve heard the charming voice of Laz and his project, Bubblegum Lemonade, but man, what a way to return. I’m immediately drawn to the guitar sound, as I’m sure many of the pop aficionados will be too! Then there’s something really special about the his voice seems to rush into the verses, only to turn into a gentle melody a few syllables later, buoyed by sublime backing vocals. Plus, there’s a nice little mid-tune change around the 1:20 mark that gives a nice little emphatic bit of harmony to the song before dancing its way into a handclap-laden solo. Always love his work; the Never Have I Ever EP is out via Matinee Recordings, with a brand new LP slated to come out later in the year!

Matt Kivel Announces Bend Reality Like a Wave

In the midst of a Texas heatwave, Matt Kivel‘s voice still carries with it a bit of sunshine, a bit of promise on the horizon. On this brand new single, there’s this great moment where his voice rises, then sort of falls into the next syllable, the sort of way Tony Molina does (if you’re looking for comparisons), and in doing so, you get drawn right into the track; you don’t get hurt by Bonnie Prince Billy lending a note or two here too! The musical subtleties allow for every note to reach that pinnacle, never stepping over the voice, and all the while letting guitar lines walk their own meandering path. Just listen to the lyric of “a new reality” when it hits, and you’ll certainly be swept into this tune. Bend Reality – Like a Wave is out on October 14th via Pedro y El Lobo.

Neil Brogan Drops New Album

Long ago I fell in love with Sea Pinks, which was a new-ish project at the time for Neil Brogan; I wrote about the band as much as I could, always charmed by their angular bits. The last few years, however, Neil’s been going it solo, and he just released an excellent album full of new songs he’s recorded at home over the last year. Not one of the 12 songs reaches over 3 minutes, so you get in and out of the listen in just over 30 minutes, with a mixture of upbeat ditties and more casual pop rock. I think my favorite, upon my first few listens, has to be “All We Know,” ringing in crisp guitars to guarantee I’d be hooked. Brogan’s just going about writing magical songs, so be sure to spend your morning listening to Things Keep Getting in the Way.

Lande Hekt Shares Gay Space Cadets Video

Lande Hekt burst onto everyone’s radar earlier this year with her excellent Romantic 7″ for Emotional Response, and she’s turned right around and delivered another gem, but this time with an album announcement! This song starts out with this ringing guitar riff, and honestly, I can’t believe how easily it slides into your ears and implants itself in your memory. When it hits the chorus, you can easily hear why everyone is fawning over the songwriting, brightly charming as the melody rises up; you’re going to be begging us to get this song out of your head by the end of the day, but it lives there now, so get used to it! The new album, House Without a View, is slated for release in September, with Get Better Records.

Alvvays Announce New LP

Looks like we’re going to have a popaholics kind of day over on ATH! Alvvays announce a brand new record today, and we’ve got that brand new single for you to stream! It’s hard to believe its been five years since their last LP, though Molly Rankin’s voice still remains central to what they’re offering listeners. I like that her sugary voice is juxtaposed to the psychedelic swirl operating just behind it, kind of messing with the listener as you’re not sure what’s attracting you to the sound. It’s a brief tune, but they toy with the formula a great bit, so hats off to the group for pushing their sound beyond expectations and the trappings of pop. Blue Rev is sounding awfully special; it drops in October via Polyvinyl. Be sure to sample these new songs on the band’s NA tour this Fall!

Northern Portrait Announce New Album, Share Single

If you’re into the pop scene, you’re surely aware of Danish outfit Northern Portrait. Well, today brings us good news that a brand new record is on the horizon; it’s titled The Swiss Army, and has an August 5th release date penciled on the books. This new single has that slow-burning ballad down, offering up a calmed croon that rides on the casual rhythm section while the arrangements lift the melody to the surface. I can see this getting a lot of Smiths comparisons in the way the vocals work, but be sure you give the focus to the musical element; there are some slightly noisier elements buried in the mix that I think show the band working to elevate their sound. Wireheads Drop Life After Winter Single

Why the fuck aren’t there more bands like Wireheads you ask? Well, likely because no one’s got the chops and creativity to pull it off. Lyrically, the band are always all over the place, fitting airplane crashes, flowers and dinosaurs into a neat little narrative; there’s still some thematic ties always pointing towards what band leader Dom Trimboli describes as “life’s hope and dreams and absurd things that occur.” Musically, it lands somewhere in the fashion of what’s cool with that sort of manufactured post-punk, though this is done with some bluesy roots rock guitar licks that William Miller would most likely called incendiary. Constantly snaking through genres and styles, the band never cease to impress with their creative approach; their new Potentially Venus album will be out later this year via Tenth Court.

Pete Astor Announces New LP + Shares English Weather

Whether you’re an OG the Loft or Weather Prophets fan, you should be grateful that classic pop songwriters like Pete Astor are still doing they’re thing; you might even want to check Spilt Milk or One for the Ghost, to check what Pete’s been up to most recently. Just a few days ago Pete announced his latest LP, Time on Earth, which will be out in October; he shared the below mini-opus with the announcement, so its gotta be on our site, right? There’s all sort of arrangements working through the song: light percussion, tinkering piano, horns, etc; it really builds the song into this magnificent performance, but its success is mostly in the mix, as Astor’s voice and strum maintain a great deal of the focus, as it should be. Tapete Records will release Time on Earth on October 7th.

Flowertown Announce Half Yesterday

I know Steve Albini winning a WSP bracelet is big news…but what’s even bigger is that there’s a new Flowertown LP on the way. Just listening to these two tracks, we’re reminded of the band’s approach to simplicity at pop’s finest. I mean, listening to the first of the two tracks from their forthcoming LP (you can find a VIDEO HERE), it just comes across with a steady strum hitting the right notes, albeit in understated fashion, allowing the melody to wash over your feet as you stand upon the shore gazing at your future. When Karina and Mike trade verses in the second tune, you can feel the intimacy of pop music drawing you into the quiet space where the two record, just the three of you, marveling at music’s moving moments. Half Yesterday is out on July 8th via Paisley Shirt Records and Mt. St. Mtn.
