It takes a lot to tickle my angsty tendencies, but man if Die! Die! Die! aren’t doing their damndest to keep me on board. This last week they shared the title track from their new LP, thundering with the rhythm section from the get go, while the guitar operates like a noisy transmission from another galaxy. It feels like the song’s lurching, stopping then starting until it can no longer control itself and unleashes a blast of fury, tearing through your speakers before the song is no more. The new album, This is Not an Island Anymore will be released this Friday.

Erasers Announce Constant Connection

Tired of pigeonholed music posts by me? Well, there’s really no definition or trinket box I could shovel Aussie duo Erasers into. Sure, their latest single, coinciding with the announcement of a new LP, has this cinematic quality, churning out these otherworldly pulses while layering them with heavy washes of electronica. But, the ghostly nature of the vocals effuses this sort of space-age sterility that’s equally unsettling and intoxicating. The whole tune is like this genre study of pop, and what it means to bend and mold the definition into something wholly your own. Stoked to hear the entirety of Constant Connection when it hits via Fire Talk on April 22nd.

The High Water Marks Release Proclaimer of Things

If you’re looking to uncover a power-pop gem that might not be on everyone’s radar, you should definitely spend time listening to the latest LP from The High Water Marks. Sure, you’re going to get drawn in by the Elephant 6 connection, but you need to really focus on just how great all the songs are inside. I mean, I’m dropping one track below that just feels like the perfect piece of summery pop, rich with this vocal vibrancy that explodes through your speaker hitting you smack dab in the face. Each song’s immediately charming, immediately winning you over, and immediately encouraging you to press play again. Proclaimer of Things is out now!

Stray Fossa Ready Sophomore Album

Charlottesville based band Stray Fossa released their debut LP With You For Ever around this time last year and it quickly became a favorite around the ATH offices. While we are still spinning the debut, the band has stayed busy and is hitting us again in 2022 with the announcement of their sophomore release Closer Than We’ll Ever Know coming in June. Prior to the summer release date, the band has graciously allowed us to share the very first new track from the release entitled “Transpiring”. This one shows a band continuing to evolve their indie pop sound now with heavy doses of dreaminess and a slick groove sure to get your body moving. Check it out.

Closer Than We’ll Ever Know will be released on June 3rd via Born Loser Records. Pre-orders are already live.

Brothers Griin Announce Joy City

Brothers Griin is not a Flaming Lips side project; it’s a high octane dance party consistently evolving into beat-driven hooks by two dudes who just happen to be in the Flaming Lips…they also happen to add a bunch of their friends to the mix on their debut Joy City. And, to be honest, Nick’s been a friend of the site since the early days of Colourmusic! This track relies upon the hook thrown in from Abbey of Chair Model, adding this angelic coating of sweetness to the thumping of the work put down by the duo. Brothers Griin are a reminder we can still throw down and have a blast together (with masks and 6ft!). Look for their debut Joy City via Graveface on May 2nd.

Tess Parks Announces And Those Who Were Seen Dancing

Tess Parks has long been a performer, as we can see from the childhood video footage used to announce her new record, And Those Who Were Seen Dancing. Opening up with a heavy bit of keys and Parks’ voice, you get this smoky troubadour feel; the power of the voice alone is intoxicating, drawing you into Tess’ world. Just as you pull your ear towards the speakers, the 1:30 mark hits, dropping in a really soft beat that adds a textural layer to the tune; it provides the song with a slight bit of energy, but not enough to detract from the song’s core, which clearly has Tess as the gravitational center. This is what your kids will listen to in space, so be sure to grab the new LP when it hits on May 20th via Fuzz Club/Hand Drawn Records.

Papercuts Announce Past Life Regression

I was hoping when Papercuts dropped Baxter’s Bliss EP late last year, Jason Quever was hinting at a brand new LP, and here we are friends; the band announce Past Life Regression, with two new tracks! Both give us a glimpse at varying sounds Jason’s toying with on the new record. “I Want My Jacket Back” definitely feels like it takes place in a more nostalgic era of San Francisco (Quever’s current homebase). Still, the song evolves, transcending into this cavernous folk pop sound suited for a day watching the fog roll on, all before the sun shines on the tune once more. Turn to “The Strange Boys” and you’ve got something a little that feels a little heavier in a sense. There’s something about the way all the sounds mix that is a bit disorienting, like your record is warped. Take that in tow with Jason’s voice, and it naturally creates this pleasantry that’s maximized when it peaks at the chorus. The new LP will be out on April 1st via Slumberland.

 

Eades Share Delusion Spree

Really just wanted to get up something warm and punchy today, as it’s a blistering day outside my window here. That said, the frantic rock n’ roll of Eades seems a little calmed here, and I don’t mind that one bit, as we can all use a nice little pop rock ditty that’s not rushing in the same direction as everyone else out there. There’s something in the riff work as it kind of slides into the background in the tune’s middle that kind of hints at some of the Sonic Youth influences I think might slide under your radar; just listen carefully while the guitar solo is going about and tell me you don’t hear that! The band will be releasing Delusion Spree on March 4th via Heist or Hit.

Bart Davenport Announces Episodes

It’s been a minute since we’ve heard a proper Bart Davenport record, and it feels like this year already deserves his craft. His songwriting has a very classic pop vibe, though there are these little touches that make him seem masterful and timeless. At times, you can hear little flirtations with the Beatles or the like, maybe even a touch of Beach Boys in the chorus to boot. But, in truth, I feel like he evades these trappings; his voice has its own intoxicating style that supersedes all the musical nods, leaving us with a pop song that we won’t soon forget. His new album Episodes is out March 25th via Tapete.

Pintandwefall Announce Seventh Baby

Finnish outfit Pintandwefall, who dropped the stunning Your Stories Baby in 2020, return with their 7th album, aptly titled Seventh Baby. I love how the new tune opens with this heavy drum stomp and ringing guitar line creating this jagged wall of noise. Once the vocals catch up, they bring this powerful ballad feel, soaring boldly and directly. We get a quick glimpse at the chorus, but it quickly gets yanked away to let the tune go back to its core. You can feel the track picking up around the 2 minute mark, building vocal textures on top of one another as the song’s title is layered with various tones atop one another; it’s a feeling that’s likely going to have your stomach churning and turning in the best way. Seventh Baby will be released via Soliti Music on February 25th.
