Feel like the best way to keep rocking on a Monday morning is to drop more killer rock n’ roll, of the pop sort, of course. As we near peak running time (I’m a summer time runner) for me, I’m looking for a good hit for the playlist, and I think “Trevor Philippe” might just have what it takes. On the front end, you’ve got a sweet bit of garage style riffs running furiously while drums force you to tap your toes; I love the who gives a fuck approach of the vocals too; they don’t seem to have a care in the world. Plus, when the song decides to get a little heavy, I don’t mind that one bit either; it’s hard to wax philosophical about just good old fashioned pop rock…but find one today that treats you like Johnny Mafia. They drop their new album Sentimental on Howlin Banana Records on May 21st.

The Dead Space Share So Wasteful

I was super surprised, yet grateful, that Austin’s The Dead Space had returned after their hiatus a few weeks back, and with another single for you, hopefully you can join in the excitement over at ATH. It instantly opens with this cascading guitar line, immediately raising your anxiety level as Jenny Arthur furious pounds on drums. The rhythm controls the verses, as Quin’s guitar skitters in and out of focus, letting his voice haunt you in this cavernous manner. I love that the band never chooses the obvious release, and in fact, sometimes its the absence of that which keeps drawing me back into their tunes; they’re not here to offer you your formulaic brand of darkened indie rock. Look for their new album Chlorine Sleep to drop on May 7th via 12XU.

Stream Michael Angelheart’s Best of Vol. 1 2012-2017

Michael Angelheart has spent the better part of the last decade playing in Scott and Charlene’s Wedding, a band that had him bouncing back and forth between Melbourne and NYC, not to mention the various tours around the world. In that time, he was able to record a bunch of tunes on his own with friends from Real Estate and the Ocean Party (both bands we adore), and now those are all put together in one great record. As you’d expect, the record is filled with great little guitar pop tunes like standout single “What If You,” though I’ll admit I’m really partial to “Holding on for the High” and “LSD (Got a Hold On Me).” There’s bound to be something for you all in here, so dig into Michael’s Best of Vol. 1 2012-2017.

Announcing Space Tan’s Inti Raymi

If you’re in the Austin area and you caught the great 101x Homegrown show last night, you might have gotten an early listen to the latest from our ATH Records label, Space Tan. We got that first tune out there last night via our friend John, and figured it only makes sense that we share the exciting news with you as well, right? So, below, you get a listen to “Summer Song,” the first tune off Space Tan‘s Inti Raymi; we’ll be putting the album out on a very limited cassette on April 30th. Holiday Ghosts Share Off Grid

With North Street Air on the May release horizon, I reckon I should throw some support behind Holiday Ghosts. While the band hail from the UK, they very much have the feel of a solid Aussie outfit, sort of blending the lo-fi aesthetic with scuzzy janglings and dueling vocal melodies, always packing pop sensibility with every note. In fact, I’m pretty sure no single song you’ll hear today has as much celebratory exuberance; you only need to look at the childish joy omnipresent in their latest video! North Street Air drops on May 21st via Fat Cat Records.

Remington Super 60 Drop Talk Nouvelle Noveau

Norway pop outfit Remington Super 60 have been churning out some incredible pop nuggets the last few years, and today they add to that by dropping their Nouvelle Noveau EP. The opening track “Talk With You” should immediately turn you onto the band’s timelessness; Elisabeth’s voice could have come from one of your favorite 60s girl groups or been the intoxicating soundtrack to one of your recent indie flicks. I love the feathery nature of her notes, but it perhaps wouldn’t seem so sublime if Christoffer Schou didn’t add these delicate little touches to give the song’s lift, like the distant guitars in “I Won’t Change My Mind” and “Still Near.” Overall, the whole of the release feels like sitting down with a bowl of hot soup on a freezing day…nothing ever felt so right. Red Sleeping Beauty Return with Second Time

Red Sleeping Beauty were meant to be joined on stage at last year’s Cologne Popfest by Mary from Even as We Speak, so they did the next best thing and got Mary to join them on a track for their forthcoming record. The song’s a masterful bit of driving synth pop, running with a heavy beat that seems built for late nights and neon lights. But, as much as the energy has this dance floor fit, Mary’s softness does a good job of keeping the tune elegant, giving it this confidence that shows signs of a huge record coming our way. This tune’s available now via Matinee Recordings, with the album to follow later this year!

Dark Tea Share Finally On Time

I can see how some folks might get confused upon watching the first minute of the new video from Dark Tea, but, thematically it opens up the story of the video…not to mention it builds the anticipation, which upon release, is quite special. The song is built entirely on a background piano, sort of slogging its way through, almost working its way out of tune as Gary Canino lets loose. That nice little pop burst you’ve been waiting for lives near the 3 minute mark, letting you get lost in the swirl of guitars and riding waves of cymbals and backing vocals; it’s filled to the brim with delicious layers of musicality. Look for the tune on Dark Tea, out April 30th via Fire Talk Records.

Stream Cul-De-Sac of Love from the Lodger

I’m a huge fan of the Lodger, and why they’ve been away for a good amount of time, their return with Cul-De-Sac of Love was a great news. It drops today, and my copy is apparently on its way to my home, so I haven’t spent as much time with it as I plan. My first runs through the whole LP show the band toying with various approaches to their craft, but with Ben Sidell’s voice still remaining the core of their appeal. Honestly, it reminds me of the likely follow up to Flashbacks, employing those catchy guitar chops while still offering up a really subtle approach to pop vibes. I’ve really been drawn towards “Perfect Fit” on these morning run-throughs, but go on and pick your fave…there are plenty of great tracks to choose from here. It’s available all over the world right now!

Kevin Hairs Releases Dad of the Universe

Kevin Hairs is a true artists, not only writing songs, but also creating the own album art for each release, as well as other artistic endeavors. Today, lets rejoice that there’s a new collection of Hairs tunes titled Dad of the Universe; it’s the perfect musical gift for pop fans, with the majority of the tracks just barely stretching beyond the 1 minute mark this round. It’s almost as if the songwriting process was like chewing shitty bubblegum. Get all that sweetness that you can out of each song, then move onto the next piece, and do it all over again. “Dad of the Universe” is a spectacular song, twisting these great guitar chords and light jangling around Kevin’s vocals; I love how the mix has those two elements sharing the limelight. “The Who Heard the Who” has this heavier guitar feel that I’m totally digging on too, kind of sliding down the scales in this continuous musical free fall. If you like your pop guaranteed, spend some times with Dad of the Universe.
