The Spits Return with VI

I’m always down to listen a new record from the Spits; it only seems fitting that they announce a new record during the month of October, as they’ve always had this sort of spooky element to their sound. Buzzing guitars drive the song, almost marching towards the track’s finished on the back of precision drumming. There’s this dense fuzz encircling this tune, building in that sort of suffocating feeling while the vocals howl from deep within the cavern of the song. Any day you get one new track from the Spits is a plus, but a second one can be heard hopping over HERE. VI will be out on October 30th!

Did You Know the Resonars Have a New Album

I’ve always been a big Resonars fan, as this site can surely attest. I’m a little late to this, but wanted to make sure you all knew that you can listen to an entire new album from the band fronted by Matt Rendon. I think it would be easy to lump the band with the reemergence of psychedelia over the last decade, but Disappear really offers the perfect blend of what really seems to drive Rendon’s songwriting. For me, it feels more like the pop side of the British Invasion, though I’ll admit there’s some thunderous drumming throughout the record’s entirety. This whole record is like that perfect sunny day album you and your friends horde and pass around, like the best kept secret you don’t want anyone to know about because its so entirely special. Personally, I want you to listen to it; I’ll even tell you to listen to my favorite track “You Were There!” There will be a vinyl version of this coming out in the Winter, so keep an eye, but just enjoy Disappear now!

Driving Tune From Famous Letter Writer

It is highly likely that you have never heard of New York based duo Famous Letter Writer, but I am here today to offer an introduction of sorts. For me, the best sort of introduction is to simply offer a tune for your ears, and surprise, here’s the latest from the band called “Warhol/Warhola”. Upon first listen, I was immediately struck by the unique and engaging vocal delivery style of leading man M.I. Devine. Those sort of jerky, powerful vocals paired with electronic, garage rock music have somehow melded together perfectly to create something sort of strange, but all together something the band can call their own.

The Very Most Announce Needs Help LP

It seems like the musical world and the weather in Texas have collided to create the perfect moment for The Very Most to announce their new album. The song’s got this spritely spirit, the sort that will assuredly drawn comparisons to other like-minded indiepop acts…and that’s just fine. My favorite bit comes just after the 2 minute mark, where a female foil comes into play a vocal counterpoint; it creates a nice melodic touch that really helps the song bounce its way to euphoric close…and couldn’t we all use that!?. Dammit if I don’t love good pop tunes. Needs Help will be out on October 9th!

Jumpei Kamiya Shares New Single

Japanese composer Jumpei Kamiya is undertaking an interesting album, not too far off from various projects that have bubbled to the top amid this global pandemic. He’s crafted an album worth of songs, allowing talented vocalists to write lyrics and sing on his tracks. The first single from the release features Yuga; you’re definitely going to want to stick around for the entirety. At first, it definitely has this sort of elegance, building this trance with Yuga’s voice. Just as the 1.5 minute mark strikes, the song quietly erupts, dropping in this slight atmosphere to sweep you up in the tune’s emotion. Just wanted to hit you with a striking tune first thing in the morning!

Shy Boys Return with View from the Sky

It’s been a short couple of years since Shy Boys dropped Bell House and reminded everyone just how great a band they are; honestly, I think even as fans of their self-titled LP, even we here at ATH forgot. They’ve got a new record on the way titled Talk Loud, and while this new single has some of that upbeat swing mentality; it also kind of seems like its got something else that will pique your interest altogether. I kind of feel like it’s this amalgam of the band’s penchant for hooks, presented with this sort of 80s cinema soundtrack vibe; I don’t know, maybe part of that is the harmonies and backing vocals. The band claim that the track is them “letting loose and dancing a bit,” so you can’t begrudge them that…better yet, you may as well join them! Talk Loud drops September 25th via Polyvinyl.

The Zoltars Announce Mystery Kids

If you’ve ever met Jared Leibowich you’d know that he’s devoted to his craft; he’s writing non-stop, whether that’s for Jarebear, the Infinites, his solo stuff, or the Zoltars. We were actually super fortunate to help put out the last Zoltars effort Telling Stories, but the band is ready to return with Mystery Kids. Today we’re more than happy to share the aptly titled “August 24th,” the lead single from the new LP. I think my favorite piece about this tune is the crisp way the guitar notes turn, popping out of the mix perfectly. And that chorus, fuzzier guitars and a swell of Jared’s voice supported by some textured backing notes. In the second go round, the song gets more emphatic, almost in a sort of a fanatic stage diatribe; it’s actually a cool touch that I think gives the song just enough of an edge. Mystery Kids will be out on October 1st via Rock Tumbler Records.

Aquabats Return with Kooky Spooky

One of my favorite things about getting into punk/ska in early 90s was that it just celebrated a sense of fun. Sure, the classic punk sound had all the posturing and nihilism, but with bands like the Aquabats, you could just have fun…as a teen, that was a liberating feeling. So, here we are 25 years later and the Aquabats are going to return with Kooky Spooky…in Stereo, dropping everywhere this Friday. Today we’re dropping one of those tracks, and exhibits that joyousness that makes me yearn for my old pop punk ways. This tune has an incredibly catchy chorus, ready for you to cheer it on in the live setting. A lot of these songs will also be incorporated into the Aquabats Super Show, now living free on YouTube, with new adventures coming your way very soon! If there’s light in this world, its coming from the frivolity of tunes like these! Look for Kooky Spooky to drop Friday via Gloopy Records.

Smokescreens Announce A Strange Dream

Los Angeles’ outfit Smokescreens are definitely a group that we can get behind, especially after you consider how much I enjoyed Used to Yesterday. So, today, we get double the good news (and really triple)…first, the band have a new album coming out on Slumberland Records and second we have that new single below! But, the icing on the cake, aside from the excellent new music, is that it was produced by David Kilgour of the Clean; he also designed the album art work. There’s definitely a very Go-Betweens nod, particularly in the way the song opens with that guitar line. I love how the vocals sort of wash over you, much like the waves of the ocean repeatedly crashing upon you as the sun beats down upon your skin; its joyous and warm. We’ll keep you posted as the A Strange Dream‘s release date draws near.

Helena Deland Announce Someone New

Having released the powerful “Lylz” in July, it was only a matter of time before we got news about Helena Deland‘s debut LP, Someone New. That day has come, and with it comes a fresh single for our listening pleasure. I love how the song begins with this fragility, with Deland sitting for a portrait, as her voice seems lost in solitude. It evolves into something slightly more ornate, her voice taking a slight sparkle as it intertwines with careful chords. Around the 1:36 mark, a steadying beat enters the fray, providing the slightest bit of movement to carry the song to a close. While penned around the concept of a romantic encounter, the song also hints at the greater picture of the album, one of circling back through self-identities only to return as “someone new.” The LP is out on October 16th (Pre-Order).
