ATX Spotlight: Brand New Album from Slow

slowWe’ve been hot on the heels of Slow since we first caught their set a few years ago. Out of nowhere the band, fronted by G. Thurston, just uploaded a brand new album, Pocketknife. It’s filled with 8 songs of stuttering guitar-monies, recalling the best of the guitar-pop realm. I love that they were able to capture some of the band’s live energy in the recordings, not to mention Darren Shorts (of Basketball Shorts fame) is working out the bass here. Congrats to the band for getting these songs out here; go listen and be sure to spend your money where your heart is.

bigwaveIf you’ve been riding along on our site, you surely know that I’m greatly anticipating the forthcoming Big Wave Riders album, Endless Summer. And wouldn’t you know it, we’ve got it streaming below for your enjoyment. I love the maturity the band have show, hitting various touchstones that I adore, particularly in the realm of great guitar pop like “Crest of a Wave” or upbeat pop numbers like “Flipping the Bird.” You’ll even hear some fuzzier psych influenced tracks lurking around, so music nerds will get a little bit of it all from this album. It’s soaked in an essence of cool, begging for you to get hip to the Finnish band’s sound. Grab it from Soliti on Friday!

 

Big Wave Riders Announce New Album

Big_Wave_Riders_-_Crest_Of_A_Wave-cover_smallThere’s something hopeful on the horizon, something where anything and everything is waiting for you…at least that’s what Big Wave Riders are promising with their brand new song, “Crest of a Wave.” It’s a positive message that accompanies the band’s announcement of their next LP, Endless Summer. The sound of the guitars also provide you with that sensation of optimism; it’s indie rock of the guitar pop sort, but you’ll find it ratherjoyous. There’s even a happy little yelp just after 2 minute mark displaying how much fun the band are having. Look to get your hands on their new LP on August 26th via Soliti Music.

Black Marble Is Back!

blackmarbleI think I can attribute my re-introduction to electronic music to Black Marble and the album A Different Arrangement. But, the project has been mostly quiet since that release…until now. Yesterday, this track blew up with the announcement that there’s a new home for them, Ghostly International. I think that heavy resonating drum sample is really one of my favorite pieces here, but I’m also enjoying the contrast between the song’s soft emotional pull and the deep tonal quality of the vocals. It’s Immaterial, the new album, will be out on September 30th.

ATX Spotlight: Will Courtney Preps New Album

willcourtneyLong ago, Austin act Brothers and Sisters made huge waves in town…and while they’re sorely missed, songwriter Will Courtney hasn’t stopped writing music. He’s got a brand new record coming out this week, and I thought you should put it up on your radar, just in case you needed some great new music to enjoy. The new record is titled Planning Escapes, and while the record isn’t officially out until July 15th, you can catch his release show at Hotel Vegas this Friday with Wes Coleman and JD Clark. Listening to this single, I forgot how much I missed his voice. Those of you looking for a classic indie rock sound with a passionate singer behind it need look no further than the song below.

Premiere: Losers Way Home Ready New Album

losersHaving worked hard in theMemphis scene (and now out in Arizona), the fellas in Losers Way Home are ready to bring their new album, Love Songs for the Rest of Us. While there are some attributes that play upon the sound of modern indie folk, I think the string arrangements that resonate throughout elevate the track beyond the random fare; it creates musical peaks and valleys, enchanting listeners from the moment the song takes flight. An innocence also exists here, which comes in the youthful tones of the vocals. Definitely think a lot of folks will be interested to hear what these guys have to offer; look for this new album on July 22nd!

New Album Coming from Ryley Walker

ryleyWhile Ryley Walker is only becoming a household name for many, he’s been quite busy since his stardom burst through with Primrose Green. Today comes new that he’ll be issuing a new record with Dead Oceans, Golden Sings That Have Been Sung, on August 19th. Musically, he’s still an exploratory artist, taking on the space his guitar has crafted, adding in varying textures of percussion and further guitar accompaniment. His vocal delivery seems steadying, but almost inserted as an afterthought, wordplay inserted to keep your attention as the song’s changing patterns unfold. There’s always more than meets the ear in his work, so bring your careful listens to this 6 minute jam.

There’s a New Cass McCombs Album Coming

CassMcCombs_MangyLove_CoverArt-copyThere are a ton of acts that get loads of press, and I’m not always on board with the buzz (I know, I liked the first album better…blah blah blah). But, I’ve really enjoyed the work of Cass McCombs, so with the announcement of a new album, I’m actually really excited. I enjoy the way the track opens with McCombs calming croon coming in over the strings and ringing guitar chord that’s high in the mix. There’s even a little bit of a touch that seemingly makes it perfect pop for lounge acts…and I mean that in the best way possible. His new effort will be titled Mangy Love, coming out later via Anti Records.

The Galaxy Electric Announce New LP

galaxyelectricI’m totally head over heels for this new tune from The Galaxy Electric, even though I can’t quite put a finger on why I love it. There’s parts of it that sound like a sprawling version of French electronic pop, though with a touch more experimentalism and a penchant for really playing around within the confines of typical pop structures. It’s not every day you find a track that can’t be explained, which makes it all the more powerful in the long run. Look for the band’s brand new Everything is Light and Sound on June 18th.

stfuI love it when someone who you admire musically releases something new out of the blue, something you gravitate towards. Preston M. is a member of Bloody Knives, who’ve graced our Internet site before, and just yesterday he tossed up a completed album with D. Garcia, going by the name of STFU (that’s a wrestling move, right?). It’s part industrial electronica and part dream pop, meeting somewhere in the dark middle. I like that some tracks offer up vocals, while others clearly have the duo experimenting with sound. Like your music with a hint of darkness and noise, and a dash of pop? Get into the band’s debut album, What We Want. Stream it below.
