BRNDA Share Peach Pit + Announce Total Pain

When it rains it pours, and today is one of those days when there’s just a nonstop influx of sweet jams making it into my old inbox, like DC lot BRNDA who’ve just announced Total Pain today. It’s really hard to pigeonhole their sound too, making the opening banger all the more special. I can hear some remnants of the noisier indie rock stylings of maybe a Sonic Youth or Yo La Tengo, but there’s a bigger pop brand bubbling beneath the surface of this one. There’s also this infectious sort of chant the group go through twice in the tune, and the execution of that moment just cements the hook you’re going to endure when you crank this one up. Total Pain is out on September 12th via Crafted Sounds.

Girlatones Ready Split with Forever Son

If you went and visited my plays in the year of 2020, you’d probably see a heavy bit of Girlatones on there; I adored Horn if You’re Honky. So, just last week I caught wind that they had a new split planned, and had already dropped a few new tunes I didn’t even know about! They’re both brilliant, and they illustrate exactly why I love the group, letting their albums kind of embrace all the good sides of pop songwriting, but blowing any which way the band choose. Look at the spritely feel of “Only the Best,” popping and weaving like some of the sharpest indiepop around. Then, “On the Wall” masters the moments, like the tonal switch from second 24 to 28, hitting me with an emotional arrow while the tune stomps on. I’ve also included a Forever Son track from the split, so you can further sample what’s coming your way soon. Three great song, one post! By the Book is out on BDK Records on Friday!

 

Stella and the Very Messed Share Big Familiar

The news of brand new Stella and the Very Messed has been sitting in my inbox for a few weeks, and I’m so excited about this record I couldn’t wait to share the news with you. Stella Maxwell, formerly of Cruiserweight, has been a powerhouse in the Texas music scene for several decades, and despite my love for all her previous works, this new single is just a straight hit. A light strum opens before the drums crash in with a wash of heavy guitar riffs, hitting you right in the face as Maxwell’s voice belts out notes with an assuredness of an indie rock veteran. The way the band pull back to kind of offer a little moment of rest, then blast back just builds this huge wall of power that washes over you again and again. You’ll be able to get yourself a copy of their new record, Big Familiar, this Fall via Double Helix Records.

Glimmer Drop Another Hit

New York based group Glimmer has been slowly releasing hit after hit over the last couple of years or so. Today we’ve been notified that a debut album is finally coming sometime this fall, which will feature this new jam “Sorrow Again.” It’s a sludgy, grungy gem of a tune and I will seriously start questioning your tastes if you don’t like or have yet to discover this band. We’ll keep you posted as deets trickle in on the new album, but in the meantime, enjoy this one.

Check Out Shaggo

It is nearly impossible to catch up with all the great music dropping in the world, so I missed this Shaggo record that dropped, but I’ve been totally in love with the song below so I’m going to share it in hopes you’ll fall for it too. When it begins, it sort of works in that playful bedroom pop fashion, akin to Moldy Peaches or Diet Cig; I loved how it was both silly and endearing there, but relished the eruption of rock n’ roll that awaited. The group clearly sell the rock side, taking a more modern spin by putting it all on blast, though they still get to keep “whoo-oohs” in there to amplify the joy they seem to have in their songwriting process. Do yourself a favor and check out their LP, Chores.

That New Mac DeMarco Tune

I will openly admit that I have probably spent an inordinate amount of time complaining about how Mac DeMarco was the new Dave Matthews; he was responsible for many a copycat, and many a cover at house shows/coffee shops! Still, I did appreciate a good portion of his work, but I feel like yesterday’s single is actually one of his best pieces, reveling in its simplicity and charm. It almost sounds like something Bolan or Johnston would have pulled up, with this intimacy being worn on the sleeve, with little less needed as the attraction is just masterclass. Didn’t expect to find myself loving this as much as I do, so now I have a feeling that I’ll definitely be spending time with Mac’s new LP, Guitar, which comes out on August 22nd.

Dragnet Share Red Square

With a little bit of a sleepy start to the morning, I felt like we should ramp it up a little bit, thus here we are with a fresh tune from Melbourne’s Dragnet. They waste no time wiggling in with jagged punk stabs cutting right through the speakers, little key notes adding in some flare throughout for just the faintest sprinkle of hooks. There’s an undeniable tenacity in what they’re creating, and when the line of “I see red, red, red” reminds me of the Hives in its bravado and simultaneous bite. Spoilsport Records will drop Dragnet Reigns on August 15th, so be ready for your ears to bleed.

Hadnot Creek Release Leaving

Robert Sawrey’s songwriting project Hadnot Creek caught our ear last year when Birds was released in late Summer. Less than a year later, and there’s another installment titled Leaving, which we’d like to point you towards this Friday morning. You’ll get a little bit of traditional alt-country sounds on the LP, though if you listen to the opener below you’ll hear a bit of an edge coming through. Songs like “Witness” give you a slightly different take, diving more into a kind of renegade country edge that would make someone such as Kris Kristoferson proud. It’s a little country, rock n’ roll splashed all over, giving you enough variance to make the whole of the listen exciting.

Automatic Return with Is It Now?

If you missed listening to Excess, the 2022 LP from Automatic, you should go give it a few spins, as it’ll get you prepared for the exciting news that the LA outfit has a new record on its way. The title track from their forthcoming Is It Now LP just recently dropped, and already there’s tons of attention growing around the trio. This single emphasizes the band’s focus on the rhythm section, which clearly drives the hook on this song; the punctuation mark comes from the ways the vocals get delivered in and out of the locked hooks in the bass line, begging you to bob and weave around your own room. It doesn’t hurt that there’s a nice wash of synthetic atmospherics sliding across the tune either. Is It Now will drop this Fall via Stones Throw.

Dummy Release Bubbelibrium DLC

While on their own meteoric rise, you have to give credit to the folks in Dummy; they’ve enlisted a bunch of electronic artists (some with pedigrees, some without) to remix their album Free Energy. Getting folks like Wishy and Three Quarter Skies to participate allows the band to give back to the community that’s responsible for their own dive into electronic music. Watching the group grow from their noise purveyors to electronic savants makes sense when you hear the way the pieces all fit together in this unique remix record. You can stream Bubbelibrium DLC all below, and then applaud the band for turning other folks onto their favorite artists.
