Straight Rock N’ Roll from Turf War

TurfWar_PressPhoto1.180040One of the many acts that I think is severely overlooked is Turf War. Their first album Years of Living Dangerously still manages to make its way deep into my playlist, years later I might added.  They’ve just announced they’ll be releasing The Great Escape EP, and I’m stoked to see that things haven’t changed much.  When I hear them, I tend to think of straight rock sounds a la the Replacements, but I can also hear bits of blues and country lurking back in their somewhere…you combine it all and you’re bound to have a winner.  I’m guessing a new LP is right around the corner, and I’m placing my bets that it’s going to knock your socks off.

Jam Out with Oberhofer

oberhoferI love the rich pop music that Oberhofer created, not to mention the live show they put on at ACL this past year.  So, with that in mind, I’m excited they’ve already geared up to release a new EP, titled Notalgia; it comes out on April 23rd via Glassnote.  It’s steady guitar pop when it opens, with the machine gun drumming pushing the pace forward, but the chorus is where the song truly takes flight.  It bursts forth with ringing guitars and accompanying arrangements that really display the profound pop exploration of the group.  I won’t complain about hearing this song a dozen or so times today, and neither should you!

New Pop from CornerBoy

Running a site like ours does take a bit of work, so I always check in with my favorite labels to see what they’re working on, and when I went to Dufflecoat Records, I was really excited to see this new CornerBoy release.  The tune has a bit of angular guitar work that plugs you into the primal sensation of good indie pop.  I can’t help but hear the ghost of Robert Pollard in the vocals, which of course makes it all the more special.  You can pick up the new EP, Just Another Sunday Song, from Dufflecoat now, and you’ll be glad you did.

Smooth Listening from Leapling

Just a few weeks ago I brought you this semi-new tune from Leapling, letting you know that the act had recently signed with the wonderful Father Daughter Records.  Not even a week later, I’m back with news that the bands 5 song EP, Losing Face, is now set for release on January 15th.  In my ears, I appreciate the careful approach to pop songwriting the group has taken here–nothing seems forced or trivial.  This is the sort of music that is both challenging and comforting, which makes it a winner in my book; it should be one in your book too, if you’re writing one.

New (ish) Tune from Cheap Curls

It’s good to know that a little bit of that Dum Dum Girls heritage can now stake some claim in Austin, Tx.  Former member Katie has come back home to Austin, and she’s working under the name of Cheap Curls.  She’s just recently released a new EP via Art Fag Recordings, and I’m finally getting the time to give it more than just a glance.  There’s definitely some resemblance to her former band mates, but I tend to think Katie’s got more of a forceful songwriting style, which just happens to please my ears.  We were reminded of her talents when she helped make way for the Crocodiles this past Friday night. Oh, and one of her band members features a dude from The Rise, so there’s more rad Austin history for you!

New Music from Boarders

There’s not a whole lot of information out there on Boarders, an Australian outfit specializing in combining bright jangling guitars and warm coats of haze.  The group has just released a brand new EP, Vintage 2011, and you can currently grab it from them HERE.  I found the track below really interesting because the guitar work, particularly in the opening moments, really excited my ears.  Then you get the joint male/female vocal interplay, which is always a nice touch when executed so well.  Your mission is to jam to this song, then go grab the EP!

New Tunes from Pretty & Nice

Man, what a trip down memory lane!  When we had our first SXSW party back in the day, we were a young site and super excited to have any bands participating.  One of the great acts that we were lucky to have was Pretty & Nice.  They’ve been a it silent since then, but there’s been slow hints at a return to form; that day is finally here!  The group has just released a new single from their forthcoming EP, Us You All We, which will be released on November 16th.  Based on this song, it’s going to be high energy with tons of fun tied into the mix–two great things the band never ceases to provide.

New Jam from The Denzels

Over the last years we’ve seen an increase in sunny guitar-pop, filled with jangling guitars and soaring choruses.  The Denzels are another such band, though I’m really enjoying the deep vocal tones of their singer, giving them a bit of a twist on the formula, though not too far away from their peers.  They’ve got a new EP out now titled Easy Tiger, which is their second EP as a group.  If you listen to the whole thing as a set, you can tell that there are more hooks lurking behind this band, ready to make us bounce in the very near future.  Need a pick me up? Dream Pop from The Belinda Butchers

The last several years have left me with a pretty solid impression of what to expect with San Francisco bands, so I was surprised when I started checking out the latest EP from The Bilinda Butchers, Goodbyes.  If you can catch the allusion in the band’s name, then surely you’ll think you’ve got them locked-down, but they’re not out to blaze the trails of their namesake…though you could possibly throw the haze/gaze word around a bit.  I like the rhythmic electronic of this track, with it’s vocals immersed beneath the song a bit.  This definitely gives me a different idea of what San Fran is all about.

New Pop Number from Pale Sunday

It’s already been a great year for our friends over at Matinee Recordings, having released the new Cats on Fire and several great EPs.  And they’re at it again with a new EP from Brazil’s Pale Sunday.  The title for the release is The Fake Stories About You and Me, and you can grab it from the label right now.  Gentle pop music seems to be the group’s specialty, and you can see similarities to the great Teenage Fanclub, but personally I think that things on this listen are a lot softer–in an endearing way of course.  Find yourself falling in love with this new track…it’s easy to do.
