Non-La Announces Like Before LP + Shares Hurtful Single

My daughter and I loved Non-La‘s last LP, Not In Love (she loves the pink cover). As much as I adored that LP, it sounds like DJ On has completely upped the ante, as cliches go. If you give this bran new single a listen, you’ll have a hard time turning the other cheek to these tasty little pop morsels. Something in the songwriting reminds me of early Weezer, or perhaps more recently, Tony Molina, toying with the soft/loud dynamic as riffs and melody mosh together in the pit of the tune. Just listen to that cascading guitar riff in the chorus and tell me you didn’t just swoon a bit! Like Before is the title of the new record, and it looks to win you over on March 29th, courtesy of Mint Records.

Corridor Announce Mimi LP for SubPop

You ever feel like you’re missing out on something, then someone comes along and drops it into your lap, and you’re like “fuck, this all makes sense; I’ve been looking for this!” Well, that’s sort of my feeling with Corridor, the Montreal indie rock outfit that is set to drop a new LP via SubPop. Their latest single bashes in with some ringing noise, only to peel the layer back, dropping in these delightful melodies atop a really light strum; this all feels enchanting, like creating a sense of longing, which perhaps ties into the lyrical concept. Just as you feel the band heading towards the pitfalls of modern indie, they drop in a stabbing build of guitars and blown out speakers, creating this atmosphere that elevates the sound. I’d rather listen to this all day than the 300th band that wants to be the next Idles; they drop Mimi on April 26th (on Bonsound in Canada).

Cranking That New Variety Tune

If you know what’s good for you, you already listened to this Variety jam last week via Post-Trash, but, seeing as the band’s the new project from Borzoi‘s Rhys Woodruff (an ATX treasure), we had to give our love to the song as well. I’m enamored with the way that the drums and jingling guitar lines give into this tune’s anxiety; this feels like the more dangerous brand of what Omni’s been doing over the last several years. Woodruff’s got this indifferent curl on the vocals , creating this aura of nonchalance that completely runs in contrast to their surroundings. Austin fans can catch the band playing this Friday at Hotel Vegas, with a few other dates scattered at the beginning of February.

New Music from Big Hug

It’s a pretty dreary day outside of the various ATH offices, so I wanted to punch in this brand new track from UK outfit Big Hug, give myself a little kick in the pants. If you’re a close listener, you’re going to hear the careful craft of acts like Braid in the songwriting. Every instant of the song has these guitar lines wiggling in and out of the front of the mix, with a thumping bit of percussion crashing through the tracks’s core. Still, the earnestness of the vocal blasts give this tune the currency to slide right into your every day listening habits; they’ll have a brand new EP dropping on March 1st.

Corker Release New Single

Feel It Records was on a roll late last year, releasing tons of great new music for us…and now they’ve got Corker releasing a new single. It rips right through your speakers, offering up a brand of post-punk that feels sort of Marked Men adjacent, to me anyways. It’s got this natural pop sensibility, but it’s surrounded by this darkness as the band play into their own aspirations by driving the listener at a furious speed whilst piling on their disorienting vocals. It’s a quick little ride through rock n’ roll town, but if you’re definitely digging their Falser Truths LP from last year, this comes as welcome news to you.

Sourmilk Release Another Hit

Indonesian based group Sourmilk is coming off a truly strong year with the release of multiple hit singles, including the personal favorite “Sick Girl.” The new year looks to be starting off strong as well, coming on the heels of this impressive new track called “Sike.” It’s wild when a band can execute such a performance while giving a sense of effortlessness or even a hint of boredom. You can almost hear it in the lead vocals from Jess as she gives off this aura of “yeah I am great at this and you will enjoy it.” I am here for every bit of it. Bopping Along to Holiday Ghosts

I have to admit that I’m totally enamored with this new Holiday Ghosts single. There’s something about it that feels like its lineage links all the way back to some of the late 70s punk coming from the UK, albeit with a more modern spin to it. Kat Rackin’s entirely responsible for the insatiable hooks that course through the tune; its her drum work and vocal delivery that adds the spiky punch to the tune as it drives forward. It’s so sharp, yet these wiggling guitar lines noodle their way in and out of the tune, maxing out the hook factor. This tune comes with the announcement of Coat of Arms, their latest LP for Fat Cat…plus they’ll be braving the seas and coming to Austin for SXSW!

Boy With Apple Ready Debut LP

A few years back, Sweden’s Boy with Apple were all the rage over here at ATH; they had several rad singles I wrote up, but then disappeared. Apparently, that was to hole up and finish up their debut LP, which we’ve got a peek into with this fresh single. A simplistic view on their style would be to offer the group up as some brand of dream pop, and I totally get that when listening to the guitar bits that wave across this tune. But, if you put your ear closer, or turn up your headphones, you can certainly hear an almost 90s earnestness to the vocal delivery, particularly when the chorus erupts into that ethereal pop pulse. It’s a really special moment, working really tightly with this trippy club beat that works the percussive element deep in the song’s shadows. Looking forward to hearing what their debut Lp sounds like; it drops via Varo Records on March 15th.

Circling Back on West Wickhams

Still trying to get through all of my emails from the end of last year, and I promise you, I’m almost there! I’ve got a handful more like West Wickhams to throw out, but I had to circle back on the darkened brand of rock n’ roll this group brings to the fold. Throughout their last album, Vivre Sa Vie, you have tons of what one would consider traditional post-punk; it’s dark and brooding in every sense, punctuated by sharp cuts in the guitar sound that add an ominous atmosphere. The tune below, however, has a little more spirit; the pacing and the growl of the guitars push everything forward consistently, meeting at the cross-streets of Wire and Blank Dogs. Give it a spin!

Conflict at Serenity Pools Share Rosey Dream I

One of the quietly satisfying LPs from last year was Ladders of Misfortune by Conflict at Serenity Pools; the LP was a mixture of bedroom pop and pensive lyricism, which seems to carry forth as the group prepare a new EP for us. Our first listen has the project operating in almost a trip-hop territory, letting the backbeat set the mood for the song’s entirety. From there, the band drape melodic vocals and shimmering guitar notes to build the track into its emotional state. As for the thematic notes, the band are using this song twice on their Rosey Dreams EP, each offering a different version as a parallel to the way our dreams and goals shift depending upon where we are in life. Look for the new EP February 8th!
