Emma Anderson Shares Clusters

Emma Anderson‘s new album is definitely something folks should have on their radar right now, as the songwriter claims the abrupt end to the Lush reunion left her “songs and bits of music” ready to go, leading to the work that would become Pearlies. This fresh single is nice and airy, which allows for Anderson’s voice to twinkle like the clusters of lights in the accompanying video below. I really loved when the song sprang to life, elevating the percussive element and the strum of the guitar just before the 1 minute mark; it’s a subtle change, but one that felt like it provided a nice dose of textured depth to the tune. Grab the new LP from Sonic Cathedral on October 20th.

Flooding Share Transept Exit

If your frustrated with the world, feeling like you just want to punch a hole in the wall, well, then nothing’s going to get your mind ready for it like listening to the latest single from Flooding. They walk this fine line in their music that operates between a nightmare and gorgeous slowcore; you can hear the hints of both working against one another in this track. It opens in a brooding fashion, letting the vocals come in on a whisper as speakers begin to rattle on the edges. Here, the track erupts with this tenacity that begs your attention, like a caged-animal let loose through in your room, destroying all in its path, only to come to a close as it catches its breath, reflecting upon its power. Flooding will release Silhouette Machine on September 29th…with a tour scheduled at the end of October.

Braden Lawrence Shares I Don’t Wanna Die in Texas

You likely know Braden Lawrence as part of The Districts, but for now, he’s stepping out on his own to release his own LP, When You Lose the Light. On the latest single, there’s definitely a bit of hyperbole running through the lyrical work, though the story has its roots in a dying van on the road between Santa Fe and Dallas. For me, I love the way the sliding guitar shoots across the background, bending at the turn while Lawrence and backing vocalist India Coombs do their part to make the listener swoon. There’s something about their interplay that reminds me of a distant Rilo Kiley, albeit through a more modern folk twang. Plus, you get lots of great video footage here, which should encourage you to grab the LP; it’s out September 29th via Anxiety Blanket Records.

Uni Boys Share Let’s Watch a Movie

I’m so glad that power-pop is making a full on come-back nowadays. Walking the line between anthemic arena-rock hooks and high-octane riffs is right up my alley. Cali’s Uni Boys are currently one of the best at bringing back they style, and their latest video rocks this infectiousness that begs for you to turn things way up in the speakers and let loose. There’s little vocal hiccups in the syllable delivery, reminding me of a more polished Joey Ramone, with the rest of the group adding in their backing voice to really pump up the savory flavor here. Plus, the video makes it seem like they’re having a ball, which make the group all the more endearing. They’ll drop Buy This Now! on October 13th via Curation Records.

Azure Blue Returns with Rise

Tobias Isaksson’s Azure Blue project has always been a pleasure to pump through my speakers, and as he prepares a brand new LP, he’s dropping this absolute banger of electro pop to get you ready. You’ll need to turn this up, and immediately you’ll find yourself sinking right into the thumping rhythm of the tune, heavily washed with synths. Isaksson’s vocals craft this melodic center, able to kind of ride the synthetic pop waves working beneath. Late at night or early in the morning, this a thumping hit! You’ll find the track on the next LP, The Night of Stars, will be out soon via Matinee Recordings.

The Small Intestines Share Stop Pretending

For those following the nerdy side of Australian pop music, The Small Intestines is one of the most anticipated releases dropping before the year is up. Featuring members of Chook Race and Peach Happening, with a nod to Go-Betweens, The Bats, etc, you’re guaranteed to fall in love with every song. But, before they drop Hide In Time, they’ve got one slow-churning hit to satiate you pop fans. I love the breeziness of the tune, particularly the way lead guitar seems to sway back and forth between your ears. There’s a nice little sugary moment in the chorus when you get a little of a swell in the vocals, leaving you with the perfect bite of Aussie guitar pop. Hide In Time is out September 29th via Meritorio Records/Lost and Lonesome.

Holy Wire Offer Latest Single

At our annual SXSW party last year, we were stoked to have Holy Wire on that bill; Alalin Paladis has been really diving into charming indiepop, harnessing the pieces of nostalgia we adore and continuing to push them those sounds. On the latest single from the project, you have a dancefloor ready number, punching the groove from the get go, with Paladis’ vocals soaring as they are wont to do. Interestingly, the musical element, and the euphoric vocal burst from Alain seem hell-bent on reaching euphoria, but lyrically, it seems like the song’s about retracing moments of regret, so you’ve got this class between concept and style…something right up my alley. The tune’s going to be on a cassingle, so grab it now HERE!

Shiny Darkly Share New Single

I’ve really been into the work of Shiny Darkly this morning. They offer up something that kind of seems like it’s post-punk-adjacent. You can hear the construction playing in those sort of industrial spaces, using those cold, angular guitar riffs to knife through it all. Still, they use a lot of the negative space to allow things to move and digress in a different fashion, letting the vocals creep along in the background, almost encircling those fiery riffs running up front. There’s just something cavernous in their construction that has me blindly wondering deep into that tunnel, completely immersed in their sound. You’ll get this track on their II EP, out November 24th.

Latest Single from Bodies of Divine Infinite and Eternal Spirit

When I heard the first track from the forthcoming Bodies of Divine Infinite and Eternal Spirit, I was fully expecting an LP of pummeling psychedelia. But, on their latest single, things seem to have completely changed, which is fitting for a record where each song is named after various settings/moods. This one is completely peeled back, offering listeners the rawest form, with the video focusing entirely on Daniel Ward’s voice atop a very lightly strummed guitar. The rest of Bodies quietly join in to add a layer of light during the chorus, but you might miss it on first runs, as it’s just the faintest bit of nuance to this really stunning tune. Bodies release All the Songs I Know About Fire on October 6th via Dinosaur City Records.

The Creepy Crawlies Share Title Track from Weeds LP

There’s only a few more months of releases before all those heralded year-end lists pop up everywhere, so I wanted to point you at an album that my fly under your radar: Weeds by The Creepy Crawlies. On the album’s title track, you get the perfect fragility in the vocals from Chris Donlon, which really is one of the reasons I keep replaying the song. The space behind Donlon’s voice gets filled, whether it be ebbs of distortion or electronic blips, you get this feeling of natural movement throughout, much like the record as a whole. I love the way this opens up as almost a typical ballad, vocals and strum, before it blossoms before your ears. Good news for you, Weeds is out tomorrow! Grab it HERE.
