Tetsu the Phoenix Share Full Moon on the Wane

When you wake up in a mood, sometimes its best to sink right into that space, like I did when I found this Tetsu the Phoenix track this morning. Surely, the walls of distortion will create the shoegaze pigeonhole, but I’d like you sit and peel those layers back, revealing a really gentle ballad. There’s something soothing in the longing nature of the chorus, providing this sentiment that has you going back through your mind, reflecting on the various paths you’ve traversed recently. That said, I like the flows in and out of the gaze elements, providing a nice bit of texture to a fairly calm center. Look forward to hearing more from the band; this tune brought to you courtesy of Strange Library.

Swansea Sound Share Keep Your Head On Video

Indiepop supergroup Swansea Sound will have a new record out later this year, so in the meantime they’re here to encourage your fandom by sharing their latest single. In contrast to their debut album Live at the Rum Puncheon, this song seems a bit more stationary, playing up the vocal interplay between Amelia and Huw rather than rocking with a frantic pace. There’s definitely a stomping bit that comes with the chorus, as they’re every-bit a rock band, but you can feel the natural swing in the songwriting, bringing about a sweeter bit of movement. Also, looks like they’ve expanded the lineup to include a certain Bob Collins; he seems real cool. They’ll release Twentieth Century this September via their Skep Wax label!

Norway’s Yndling Share Fresh Single

Wanted to slide us into our Friday coverage with this really dense bit of pop magic from Norway’s Yndling. After about 15 seconds of ambient noise, the track creeps right into these darkened pop moments, with cascading guitar lines raining from your speakers while the bass bubbles buoyantly beneath. Vocals from songwriter Silje add this ethereal quality to the track, carrying your mind into freeing spaces, letting you just drift. What I loved about this tune was the way the rhythm section kept pushing the pace; it keeps the energy pulsing where other like-minded acts might let the dreaminess cover your ears. Hopefully we’ll get to hear more soon!

Glimmer Share Brand New Single

Jeff Moore called it a day on his old band back in 2020, after years of rocking it for us. Now, he’s been focusing on a new project, Glimmer, and now they’ve got a fresh single ready to rip through your speakers (or headphones). One of the things I love about Jeff is his knack for updating those heavy riffs that dominated stereos throughout the 90s, turning them into pop-centric jams you’ll have on repeat. How so? Well, for starters, the song’s always seem to peel back in the right moments, letting the weight of the guitars subside. This allows the vocals to enter in a velvety fashion, smoothing out the harder edges to leave you with a classic pop vibe. Keep an eye out as we hope to hear more from Glimmer.

Rubber Blanket Offers Good Times

Made up of members of Wounded Lion and the Intelligence, it makes sense that Rubber Blanket would fall into my wheelhouse. Their latest tune certainly fines itself with some lineage to classic horror punk sounds like The Cramps, though this takes up more of an anti-pop approach, making it altogether more frightening. Don’t fret, there’s still some little joyful quirks lurking in the contents, like the dual vocal moments or the emphatic syllable bounce in certain words. It borders on being too smart for its own good, but hopefully the members other association will help guide the way. If you enjoy it, Our Fault is out June 29th via Mt. St. Mtn.

Qozy Share Pieces, Release Sleep Over EP

Qozy released the Sleep Over EP last week, and it took me a minute to catch on, but as I did, I reckoned there were a handful of folks would be like-minded. Of the handful of tracks on the EP, “Pieces” is one that I keep gravitating towards, particularly as it keeps providing this warped vision that seems to kind of hang on the edges of my own sanity. You’ll hear the song warble a bit, as if the tape was deteriorating and creating this fade in and out. Sitting carefully in the center are the vocals, with lyrics written by Qozy’s dceased friend; it adds a harrowing detail to an already subdued vibe, letting you fully immerse yourself in the tune. The Sleep Over EP is now available, so jump right on in!

Chitinous Mandible Share Summertime Drive

How does one develop the soundtrack to the perfect “Summertime Drive?” I mean, we all have our different expectations, but in the case of Tom Herman Jr, perhaps he turned to road trips with his father, who plays drums on the tune here. The vibe here almost seems to be one of American nostalgia, albeit one through a slightly psychedelic lens. In both the video footage and this track, there’s this natural feel of exploration and wonder, like we’re all constantly stumbling upon new lessons as we hit the road ourselves. So, you owe it to yourself to discover what Tom and his father have built for you on this slow burning psych trip. Look for a self-titled album from Chitinous Mandible on June 30th.

Lola Tried Drop Don’t Care At All Video

I think Lola Tried are definitely ready to be considered one of the premiere pop rock acts in Austin at the moment. There’s a certain maturity in Lauren and Ray’s songwriting that seems to hold dear to a punk ethos while aiming for much bigger sounds, bolstered by a thunderous rhythm section that allows the song to ebb and flow perfectly. When the guitars pull back and allow the vocals to take center stage, one realizes how they’ve maximized space to play up the grittier bits. And for all the hooks in the vocals and bass lines, there’s still that rad tenacity, maxed out with a ferocious closing. Fingers crossed a new LP is around the corner here!

 

Firestations Share Travel Trouble

Thick Terrain is just a few weeks away from its release, and with a new record on the horizon, Firestations have shared another stellar song to get you in the mood. Angular guitar lines squiggle their way right into your ears from the start, perhaps building a little audial tension. Soon, the sharpness gets pushed to the background, with the vocals being brought to the forefront, detailing a sense of common humanity, while perhaps calling out those of privilege and their treatment of modern inconveniences. For all the beauty of the song’s vocal core, the weight is certainly felt in the way the song explores sonically, hitting much heavier notes throughout the song’s linear unraveling. Thick Terrain is out on July 14th via Lost Map Records.

Lewsberg Announce Out and About

If you have not purchased your tickets for the Lewsberg train, might we invite you to grab one now, as they’re sure to be one of your favorite bands…plus it’ll make you feel cool for telling your friends you were into it first. Anyways, the Dutch band announce their new LP Out and About today, dropping mixes of two of the tracks that will appear on the record. “Without a Doubt” has this spritely nature to it, just shuffling in the mix as the vocals keep things joyously grounded; it’s the precise brand of no-rock pop that the group excels at crafting. Meanwhile “Communion” feels like a pastor’s sermon delivered by someone who grew up listening to all those early Flying Nun records. Can’t say enough wonderful words about this group; Out and About is out in September; self-released, but US folks can order through 12XU.
