New Music from Silver Biplanes

When listening to Silver Biplanes latest single, you’re certainly going to here that nostalgic pop feel; the vocals are certainly reminiscent of the doo-wop pop era. But, the packaging of the sugary center is a little different here. The band build a heavy wall of fuzz, bathing the sweetness in this distorted world of atmospherics. It’s like the band have constructed this cocoon of darkness, but on the inside is this brilliant butterfly ready to break free and present itself unto the world. If you’re interested in what the band are doing, as you should be, keep an ear out, as the group are set to release A Moment in the Sun just after the new year kicks off, via WIAIWYA.

Vern Matz Shares Reality Bites

I totally love listening to Vern Matz‘s voice; there’s something so seemingly honest in his delivery that I just instantly find myself falling in deep. On his latest single, Matz gives you a bare-bones acoustic performance, with the weight of the strum coming through to give the song just a hint of punch. It makes sense that there’s production work from Toledo on this tune, as they share a similar laid back attitude to songwriting, though elevated from the tried and bored Americana of old. If you’re looking for something soft and smooth to set you on your way this Monday morning, then by all means, nestle up to this track; there’s a new album coming real soon!

Dayflower Release Picturefall

Readers should not be surprised to see us covering another track from Leicester’s Dayflower, as the group have hit our site before…but I’m really enamored by the latest tune. Light cymbals and twisting guitars brought me into the fold, teasing me with a softer whispering vocal, all before the song really launches into a heaver brand of dreamy shoegaze. Chords bend and distortion rings out, seemingly riding out a storm of noisy atmosphere before slinking back to the more pensive center of the tune, which gets a bonus added backing vocal that really ups the ante on melody. This tune’s a journey of dreamy shoegaze, so if that’s your bag, then turn it up and enjoy.

Ribbon Stage Share Exaltation Single

Up until now, Ribbon Stage‘s new ripper of an album has been accompanied by poppy singles, albeit brandished in the band’s discordant fashion. But, while they’ve noted various indiepop darlings in their work, this new single seems to be channeling a bit of Kim Gordon in the craft; the vocals feel heavy and dark, with just a hint of indifference towards everything surrounding it. Musically, the vocals are surrounded by a swirling tornado of noise, with a subtly bouncing drum beat hooking into the show here. Just really can’t get out to say enough good things here about the group; they drop Hit with the Most next Friday via K Records.

Shake Chain Share Internet Single

London’s Shnake Chain are getting a lot of buzz overseas, not that we’d necessarily catch all that over here. Luckily, we keep an eye out on Upset the Rhythm, so this tune felt like the perfect wake-up call for you. Musically, the song snakes its way between dangerous punk notes and pulsating bounce, allowing the notes to playfully move all around a crowd of listeners. Musically it’s right in my wheelhouse, but taking it to the next level is Kate Mahony’s performance, wiggling and gyrating through a vocal performance that almost feels like it’s coming to you live; you can feel the sinister energy, and in that, you’re sucked into the band’s sound and performance. Sounds like an angrier Duchess Says to me. Shake Chain release their self-titled LP on November 18th via Upset the Rhythm.

Hot Tubs Time Machine Prep Double Tubble

The hotbed of Melbourne is constantly on our minds here, continuing to impress as the sounds have taken on more risks in the recent years, like Hot Tubs Time Machine, the working project of Daniel Twomey (Lower Plenty/Deaf Wish) and Marcus Rechsteiner (UV Race). Today we’ve got a brand new single, accompanied by the announcement of Double Tubble, the duo’s new LP. Daniel’s crafted the musical soundscape, like here where you get this electronic jittering, flirting with with time signatures, warping the groove into something that moves the listener. This unbalanced washing machine of electronic pulses is the perfect backdrop for Marcus’ narration; he toys with stories both humorous and mundane, crafting this lyrical vision of Australia that connects the dots for us all. Double Tubble is out on November 25th via Trouble in Mind/Spoilsport Records.

Alien Tango Shares 1000 Years Video

There’s something supremely gratifying about the work of Alien Tango. Everything seems like its tied to this genre or that, giving it this familiarity, but there’s always this otherworldly approach that seems to seep into Alberto Garcia crafts. His vocals have this distinctive nature that flirts with the dramatic, while his songwriting, particularly here, flirts with brilliant pop rock. But, he allows the track to trickle, like a broken faucet slowly leaking out little pop droplets. Lyrically, he takes on a familiar tone as of late, relishing in the joy of every minute of the day, and failing to waste a single moment…so soak up this tune. Currently, Alberto is touching up the debut LP, so we’ll keep you posted as we get news!

Sister Wives Share Streets at Night

Sheffield’s Sister Wives have a new album coming out at the end of the month, and perhaps this little tease from the record gets you to throw a dollar down or more. Opening with this heavy psychedelic pulse, the vocals seem to take their choral nature in contrast to the darkened edge of the song’s underbelly; it creates this beautiful melancholy that paves the wave for the rest of the song to unfold. About 2 minutes in, the song slows to a crawl, the beat slows and the song turns towards a haunting sonic exploration that builds in anxiety until its final breath. Y Gawres will be released by Libertino on October 28th.

I Was a King Share Growing Wild

On the last single we got from Norwegian outfit I Was a King, we got the most brilliant piece of power pop I’ve heard this year; I still listen to it at least a few times a day. But, on this new track, the band are flexing their musical muscles, still showing an affinity for beautiful melodies and powerful songwriting. When it opens with this sort of recorded echo, I expected the opening guitar strums to jump into a fuzzy pop realm. But, that’s where I seem to always fall in love with I Was a King; they pivot, just as I thought I had them all figured out. Honestly, this feels like a Neko fronted New Pornographers number, only with Anne Lise’s voice, and perhaps a folkier bit of arrangements buried in the mix. The band continues to surprise, thus why I’ve already grabbed Follow Me Home; grab yours from the band before it hits at the end of the month!

Field School Share Fresh Single

If ever a song felt like it was written specifically for me at this moment in time, then this has to be the one. On the flipside of a jangly pop jam, Charles Bert’s new project, Field School now brings us a more contemplative piece of pop, one that highlights the careful craft Bert brings to the fold of his new LP. Lyrically, the song seems to revel in that feeling that things are slowly returning to normal; it’s perhaps an apt descriptor for the many of us, coming, or beginning to peak our heads out again after several years of weariness. I love the way each little verse begins to take on a little more instrumentation, building and building all the way to the end; it feels in an a way like a nod to Magnetic Fields, and I don’t mind that one bit. When Summer Comes drops on November 18th via Bobo Integral.
