PACKS Share Another Single from Woah EP

When the press release talked of Madeline Link’s approach to this EP, this was exactly what I imagined, having grown super familiar with her voice on PACKS Take the Cake LP. Link’s voice was always a dominating factor, and that gift sustains your listening experience here, though we get a little bit more of an intimate songwriting approach here, so much so that you can hear the buzz of the strings as they’re strummed. Structurally, the song’s seem ready to jump through your speakers, as you can hear the power in the craft, but it succeeds in its quietness. Perhaps down the road they get a revisit, but the natural charm of Link’s songwriting supersedes anything else at the moment. Woah EP is out July 8th via Fire Talk.

The Legends Share For Love Single

Johan Andergard has his hands in a lot of the great Swedish pop music I adore, from Acid House Kings to Club 8, but his solo work as the Legends always seems to always find the perfect home in my heart. This song, with an admitted study of the Field Mice, feels like is got this splendid gallop to it, like riding your horse through some sun-filled valley with flowered rolling hills. There’s just something about the vocals that lift your spirits, allowing you to peak in step with the tune itself, and a subtle backing vocal mixed in behind the front of the mix, furthering the song’s natural charm. Johan’s working on tons of tunes for 2022, so hopefully we’ll hear more soon!

Winter Shares New Single + Tours w/ Peel Dream Magazine

After hearing everyone clamoring for Kate Bush lately, Samira Winter was like “Yo, hold my beer.” On this new Winter single, you get this cavernous brooding ground, something that feels like trudging through mud; it contrasts perfectly with the bright shimmering that is layered atop. It begins to swirl and mix, with more pronounced synth notes seeping through your speakers, all the while Samira’s voice just hangs in the air. It’s like this palpable mist, soothing all that ails you as the music spins through your earholes. This sort of dreaminess will definitely be on display when Winter takes hits the road with Peel Dream Magazine, plus we’re hoping we get a follow-up to Endless Space, sooner rather than later!

Franklin Gothic Share Mr. Hangman Single

I know that its Monday, but I’m really feeling the grooves of late night summer coursing through my listening rotation today. This new single from Franklin Gothic is all about that chillwave pool party vibe, albeit with a little bit of weirdness thrown into it. Jay Dibartolo has some solid pipes, nice and softened near the edges, so as to give that coy croon to the song. That feel matches up with the string arrangements that get layered into the tune, taking this late night vibe straight into lounge mode. You’ll find this song on Into the Light, which will be dropping in August via Very Jazzed/Pleasure Tapes.

Mononegatives Drop Role Reversal Single

Mononegatives are becoming increasingly difficult to pigeonhole…and for that I’m eternally grateful. At times, the group feels like they’re operating with a penchant for video game noise pop, but then the beat settles into that motorik-ish backbeat, where jagged riffs come in and cut the song up as the vocals are delivered in an almost robotically manufactured nature. As the chorus of “role reversal” comes to life, there’s a slight hint at melodic tendencies, despite the rest of the song operating in a fairly industrial realm. You’ll flip back and forth: is this punk? do these lads do new wave? does it rule? It rules. Just listen.

Frass Green Share Mural Mosaic

Sometimes a band just brings a simple formula to the table, and their execution and hooks bring the to the top of the fold…which is what got me on this new Frass Green tune. You get sucked in right away with the way the song chugs in before the drums hit hard and the guitars begin to cascade through the meat. Once Joe Antoshak’s voice comes into the picture, the melodic pop nature is cemented; he’s got this really special delivery that operates between belting out notes and drawing you in with intimate hooks. Plus, you get a nice little mix of emphatic attitude just before the 3 minute mark. Solid tune, that I’m enjoying on this Monday morning; look for it on the group’s new LP, Buried, which hits in September.

Mon Cher Shares Better Days + New EP

Last week was shitty and disheartening, but despite the work ahead for us all, Meghan Holton’s latest single from the new Mon Cher EP promises that there are better days ahead. Musically, this feels like the best way to sort of begin our week, with the layers of this tune sort of lapping at your toes like gentle little waves, washing over and cleansing your spirit. There’s an effortlessness to the track, like its fit for whatever mood you’re in need of at the moment; there are moments where the drift turns into subdued bounce as the beat kicks in, or you can just ride back out to see with whatever layer you choose. Ram Vela and the Easy Targets Drop New Single

Our friend Ram Vela has been banging out tracks in Austin for longer than we’ve been a site; he fronted Whitman and even joined Midgetmen’s entourage for a minute. But, as of late he’s been brandishing his love of pop rock with Ram Vela and the Easy Targets. The band have a new LP dropping late this year, and we’ve got that first rocking single to bring you this morning. The band waste no time in dropping in this heavy riffage, dropping in huge distorted riffs as Ram emphatically punctuates the tune with the chorus, making sure to leave you with the hooks you desire! If you’re punching the air and screaming along, you’re doing it right. We’ll keep you posted as the record draws near!

 

Mt Fog Shares Behind a Silent Door Video

Seattle’s Mt Fog is ready to mesmerize you with their latest video for “Behind a Silent Door,” with footage that matches up with the band’s description as forest folktronica; it uses some colorful digital sketching to fill in the background of found nature shots. Musically, you’re going to love what Carolyn B is doing with her craft, structuring electronic layer atop layer so as to build a musical landscape where her vocals can come in and out of focus. Interestingly, those vocal notes match the mystic quality of the music, like a playful forest dweller, running in and out of the trees, calling to you. If you can’t get lost in the natural world, then you can certainly lose yourself in this song.

Voxtrot Share New-ish Single, Kindergarten

Those of us in Austin, of the old guard I reckon, are super excited about Voxtrot‘s recent activity, from the announcement of shows to the reissuing of some music. Today, they share “Kindergarten,” which is a song they recorded in the mid-00s, but never put out…until it hits on their new Cut from the Stone: Rarities and B-SidesLP. This one has all the makings of classic Voxtrot, from Ramesh’s urgency around the 1:20 mark to the infectious stomp that helps give the song a bit of bounce. Still every bit in love with Ramesh’s voice as I was when I was youngster, but the explosion after the 2 minute mark definitely points to some territory the group were exploring, even when it crashes into this hard-hitting piano burst. Unfortunately, Cut from the Stone is already sold out, but perhaps they’ll have some on hand when they tour in the Fall!
