If, like me, this Tuesday feels strangely like a Monday, then you need a definite pick me up, something that can put that bounce in the rest of your day. Well, might I suggest trying on this new track from Certain Times. This song is the A-side to their brand new single, and it has this heavy dance vibe, akin to the likes of Junior Boys, driving these punch beats through the speaker while the listener seeks out some melodic bits. Caitlin’s vocals on this one have a nice little sparkle too, and in a faint way, have this bit of disco enthusiasm shining through, giving off this sort of timelessness that will have you spinning in circles while you twirl about your pad relishing the joy running through your ears. Keep an eye out as they should have an LP ready for their label Double Phantom in the very near future!

Martha Release Hope Gets Harder Video

If you’re looking for obligatory pop punk it seems like the most reliable source the last few years has been Martha. Today, they’ve got a new single, and it’s as anthemic and hook-laden as anything they’ve released to date. Rushing in with furious guitars and pounding drums, the song soon settles into that melodic vocal delivery built perfectly for scream-alongs at the rock show! You can’t help but feel your feet tapping beneath you as your head starts to bob just a bit, then suddenly you breakout punching dancing across the room while singing along. Enjoy another ripper; Please Don’t Take Me Back is out on October 28th via Specialist Subject.

Joyeria Share 9 to 5 Video

When listening to the work of Joyeria, I constantly feel out of my depth; the artists seems to completely work against the grain of indie rock expectations. After some Pavement allusions in the previous single, this one feels more like the evolution of Kraftwerk, using beats to propel the the tune and give it pace, while the lyrical content takes aim at the mundane modernity we find ourselves inside. Everything in the craft just seems to be taking dead aim at the middle road of indie rock, begging us to perhaps live further outside the lines. Take a risk, indulge below; FIM EP is out October 14th via Speedy Wunderground.

Latest Single from Quivers

Our friends in Quivers reached out recently to remind me that they had a brand new single, as well as a killer US tour going on; it all follows the success of their brilliant Golden Doubt LP (Ba Da Bing). Bella’s on the vocals here, exuding this confidence of cool that seems to bounce atop the fiery chords that echo just behind her performance. The rhythm section owns this tune, however, setting the mood by building this steadily brooding beat; it matches up perfectly with the cinematography of the video. Plus, if you buy the 7″ version, it comes with a Lucinda Williams cover on the B-Side. The band have a handful of dates out in the West of the US, so check HERE to see if they’ll be near you!

Another Jam From Mother Sun

My new Canadian friends in Mother Sun have really been pumping out some nice psych pop jams this summer, having previously released one of my songs of summer in July. Today I’m happy to share this new single “Orange Colossus” which should put a nice book end to what is hopefully near the end of our Texas summer. Once again, the musicianship here is just spot on, incredibly tight and full of playfulness matched with a tight rhythm section. The addition of strings also add in just a touch of lightness amongst the psych rocking jam.

Mother Sun will release new album Train of Thought on October 28th via Earth Libraries.

The Intelligence Share My Work Here Is Dumb

The latest album from The Intelligence officially drops this Friday (though rumor has it you can stream it early!), so the band brought out one more single to get you in the groove. Sure, you can hear some of the slanted angular sounds in the stuttering guitar work throughout, but in that, you also get to hear a bit of the band’s infatuation this go round with Lee Scratch Perry; there’s this slightly low-end groove, like an anti-groove groove; your body’s not sure if it should dance, spasm or what, always being kept off balance. I just love a band that still surprises, so I’ll surely be jamming to Lil’ Peril when it drops Friday courtesy of Mt. St. Mtn.

Taleen Kali Share Only Lovers Left Alive Video

Taleen Kali will be hitting the road in just over a week, with an Austin date at Chess Club, so I wanted to make sure the band was on everyone’s radar, at least a wee bit. With an ode to vampire movies, feels drenched in sonic atmosphere, like the musical echoes of a cave filled with bats. I love how the vocals seem to kind of weave this magical spell, occasionally getting into the sultry vibe, but mostly operating with these pipes that feel like they could shatter your windows. If you dig it, stayed tuned to your local rags, as the band are spending the majority of October bringing you this song and more!

The No Ones Share All the Stupid Days

What do you get if you combine members of REM, the Minus 5 and I Was a King? Well, the No Ones! The supergroup has an album and an EP under their belts, and they’ve decided that they’re going to bring us another jam, and hopefully that means another record! Personally, this is track might be my favorite they’ve written. It’s got the perfect guitar sound, walking that fine line between punk and pop, and the vocals even have just enough bite to give the song a hint of attitude; it sounds like what I maybe wish the Replacements had evolved into, great songwriting and a touch of badass-ery. Turn it up friends.

Anne Cessna and Essendon Airport Return with New Single

Post-punk Icons Essendon Airport released a special 7″ in 1980 (the year of my birth!) with vocalist Anne Cessna, but the celebration of Chapter Music’s 30th perhaps has lured the band back…and rewarded us with a new single. The A-side is the sort of brilliant pop that was so exciting on the band’s 7″, mixing various textures in a fashion that many would like describe as modern trip-hop; it pulses and curls beneath your toes, inching its mood through your entire body. On the flipside, you get a more pensive sound, something that illustrates the group’s musicianship overlapped with poetry; I found that aligning it with artists like the Books seems apt on this tune. This new 7″ is available through Chapter Music, who will host a celebratory 30 year party in November, where Essendon Airport will take the stage!

Kindsight Share Love You Baby All the Time

One of my favorite picks from this year is the Swedish Punk LP from Danish outfit Kindsight. They’ve just returned with a fresh track that I probably want to play all weekend long, as its got that sort of presence you can’t escape. Nina’s voice has this power to it, which is on full display throughout the song, but the band sets her up to kind of rise like a sort of phoenix; they’ve got these stuttering guitar notes, quieted backing vocals and little nuance that completely fill your musical cup until its overflowing with the emotive vibe of the vocals. There aren’t a whole lot of folks doing it better than this lot right here; the single’s out today courtesy of Rama Lama Records.
