Chill Vibes From Otra Vez

Nathan and I were both huge fans of the debut self-titled LP from Mexico City based Petite Amie which came out around this time last year. It hit heavy rotation on our playlists and even featured in some of our year end lists from 2021. Since then, we haven’t heard much from the band so I was of course excited to receive this new single “Otra Vez” yesterday afternoon. It features a band on much more of an experimental, almost chillwave journey of melodies, bass lines, and an overall groovy feel. I am very much enjoying it this morning.

The Mary Onettes Share What I Feel In Some Places

I’ve always been a huge Mary Onettes fan, their self-titled album is the one LP that I can’t get enough…nor get my hands on, sadly. Today, the band return for the first time since 2018 with the announcement of What I Feel In Some Places EP, and share the title track. Opening up, the song builds this dense atmosphere, foggy in the corners, melodic hints lurking in the shadows of the sound. When the vocals come into play, they create this beautiful moment of heartfelt pop where you can feel the emotionally charged moments rise out of the heavy groove behind. The band will release their new EP on July 1st, so its just around the corner!

Skinny Dippers Share Home Single

You’re in need of a shining bit of guitar pop to win you over? Something along the lines of Real Estate or the like? Well, then I advise you to listen to this new single from Brooklyn’s Skinny Dippers. This single feels like you’ve left town, windows down and the warmth of the day shining upon your face. I love when the voice of lead songwriter Ryan Gross combines with a female counterpart; in a strange way, it brings the indie innocence of the early 2000s, though perhaps I’m just easily charmed by harmonizing. Enjoy the sunshine vibes of this tune!

Lithics Release Nature Observation Poem

If you’re one of those that missed the brilliant Tower of Age in 2020, then be sure to rectify that by heading to Trouble in Mind and grabbing it. But today, and thanks to Andy at RSTB for pointing this one out, I’m rocking a new Lithics single. If you’re looking for a marching percussive element to drive some wonky art-punk, then, well, you just need to jump on this train as it’s all about a rolling snare mixed in with some light hi-hat. Aubrey Hornor’s deadpan vocals march to the same beat, all before the guitars start to jitter in your speaker, shaking the room with angular spikes. From there, the song snakes its way in and out of your brain, weaving sharp cuts across the backbone of the marching drum beat. I love this band, and you should too!

Wombo Drop Snakey Single

Wombo were one of the highlights, for me, of SXSW; I love the band’s sound, somewhere in the realm of post-punk, and I can assume folks will likely make Dry Cleaning nods too (that might be a theme today!). This song operates atop heavy bass lines and short percussive notes; it’s not until the 48 second mark that the song begins to stretch it out a bit. When they do, angular riffs began to cut into that rhythmic backbone, sharpening the sound, with little distortion guitar blips sounding like warning alarms. Their album Fairy Rust will be out via Fire Talk on July 29th, and they hit the road throughout late July/early August…including an Austin date at the Mohawk.

Let’s Whisper Announce The In-Between Times

You get backing vocals and recording by Gary Olson, throw in Emma Kupa, and, well, you don’t really need too much more to convince me that the new Let’s Whisper LP is going to be a stellar listen! The group’s first single from The In-Between Times churns and jangles, like a song that dips its toes in the pools of paisley vibes while pressing play on the warmth of classic pop records from Athens. It’s a short gallop with huge backing harmonies that are the best things you can offer your ears this week. Should come as no surprise that the band have found a home for their new LP on Fika Recordings, who will release the album on August 26th.

Dry Cleaning Announce Stumpwork

After playing a sold-out show in Austin, and I’m assuming everywhere else they toured recently, Dry Cleaning are ready to announce the news we’ve been looking to hear; the band have a new record on the way called Stumpwork. It’s a short little number, with those angular guitar lines wiggling and squirming behind Florence’s matter of fact delivery; it feels like it packs a huge punch, albeit one that comes in under 2 minutes. I love where Shaw throws in a nice melody at the 30 second mark, adding in another layer to the group’s potent sound. Stumpwork will be out on October 21st via 4AD.

The Soft Moon Announce Exister

How can you not be thrilled by this new jam from the Soft Moon? It’s heavy and propulsive, hinting at darkness, but disguised as a heavy pop song. The moment the rhythm drops in with those tuned vocals, you’re lured into the dark side of pop. I feel like that’s fitting, as songwriter Luiz Vasquez details how the song expresses the turmoil built by his own battles with ‘good side/bad side.’ This track and video also features fish narc adding in some vocals, mixing in a little bit of that duality in the song itself. With this video you get the announcement of Exister, a new LP for Sacred Bones (9.23), as well as a huge tour across Europe and the States…with an Austin date in the fall.

The Special Pillow Announce Mind Wipe EP

Despite countless trends pointing elsewhere, timeless pop music is always in fashion, particularly over here. So, here we are with a brand new single from The Special Pillow, an acts that’s been at it for nearly 30 years, and counts Yo La Tengo as huge supporters. Listening to this brand new single, I’ve got all sort of things running through my head, at least when I’m thinking of comparisons. At times, the guitars play into the jangling pop that’s working its way around with the likes of the Umbrellas or Boys with Perpetual Nervousness. But, ultimately this band sounds to me like New Pornographers if they were able to tighten their sound (they always felt overly noisy in spots). The pop bops are noticeable in between jangles, and this tune uses multiple layers of vocals to seduce the listeners. In the end, timeless pop music is made by great songwriting, and The Special Pillow has that for days…Mind Wipe EP is out in September via Zofko.

Dummy Drop Sub Pop Single

After dropping the superb Mandatory Enjoyment via Trouble in Mind, Dummy return with a brand new ripper for Sub Pop Singles Club. They pick up exactly where they left off, dropping in these motorik drum beats that race the the song forward, while guitars and melodies battle for control over the direction of the track. Juxtaposed male/female vocals, aided by the rising sun of synth work, build this underlying brightness that the band tame just before the 2 minute mark. That, however, is a momentary blip as the song explodes into euphoric noise at the 2:17 mark to close the tune out in high fashion. Also, keep a look out at your local venues, as the band are touring pretty heavily for the time being.
