Sweet Nobody Shares Other Humans

As of right now, the new LP from Sweet Nobody is shaping up to be this really decadent pop album, something you can’t help but listen to on repeat for hours on end. On their latest single, they combine these toe-tapping rhythms matched up with really crystalline guitar jangles, taking you straight into that indiepop territory I adore. But, while you’re likely to hear some pop similarities, I think Joy Deyo’s performance is stunning here; she moves beyond merely mimicry, hitting these notes that you’d expect to hear from a Sharon Van Etten or the like; it gives the whole single a fresh feel to it, keeping the band in our listening orbit. Look for We’re Trying Our Best on September 17th via Daydream Records.

Alex Riegelman Shares I Don’t Know How to Care

As a member of Big Bill, you’d be forgiving for your misconceptions about Alex Riegelman‘s solo work, but with his latest single as a testament, it’s clear his musical touch goes far and wide. There’s definitely a playfulness in his vocal approach, and also perhaps in the song, which definitely ties back to the Big Bill lineage. But, at times he’s building these avant pop moments, akin to Of Montreal or Destroyer. Then the guitars jangle and the cymbal work comes fast, giving the song a little shimmy and a little set up that comes crashing in like an anthemic pop rock chorus that erupts for the audience. Be sure you’re all caught up on your required Alex Riegelman listening; he’s all over the place, in the best sort of way!

Smile Share Hideout Single

It shouldn’t take you too long to realize why I’m pulling for Italian outfit Smile; I mean those furiously jangling guitar chords that open the song right up gripped me immediately. Interesting, instead of adding in the casual soft vocals that you’d expect to match up with the guitar work, the lyrical content here is much more spirited, akin to all the great college rock of yesteryear, perhaps due to the band’s love of REM and Husker Du. This track is the first new single since the band’s sold out The Name of the Band is Smile LP, which came out earlier this Spring via Subjangle.

Sungaze Share Slow the Burn

I’ve really dug what I’ve gotten to hear from the forthcoming This Dream LP, so as Sungaze keeps dropping singles, I’m going to keep spending a little time with them. Honestly, when “Slow the Burn” opened, there was a brief minute when they felt like they were drawing from the organic nature of early Badlydrawnboy, but as the guitar work begins to ring in your ears, the song naturally takes on a slow burn of its own. Ivory Snow’s voice comes across heavy, offering these drifting tones that craft this natural dreaminess. Little nuanced synth stabs add some textural balance to the track, illustrating the band’s intent of touching up every little detail in their work. This Dream will be available on August 13th.

Monnone Alone Shares Pepper Jar Single

We’re just a month or so away from the new Monnone Alone LP, so you’ve got to dip your toes into the warm water in Mark’s pool of pop. This new single quickly slides into this huge ringing chords, meant for arena rock status, but brought back to Earth by the softened jangling style of Monnone’s guitar play. While I love that big sound, bordering on crunchy power pop, I think I’m in love with the vocals on this tune; they kind of hang out there on a laundry wire of pop, blowing in the wind, occasionally gusting with these delighting notes that rise and fall so effortlessly. And if that wasn’t enough, how about the song’s fade out, just budding with infectious pop bravado. Stay Foggy will be released on September 3rd via all the usual pop purveyors: Lost and Lonesome/Meritorio/Emo Response/Royal Mint.

Snowy Band Share Whatever You Want

As mentioned earlier, we’re hanging in Melbourne today, musically speaking, so it only makes sense that I toss out this new single from Snowy Band. For me, when listening to Liam sing so softly, it actually begs your attention; you have to pull yourself closer to the song, effectively making you an active part of the craft. This tune gets a nice lift after the 2 minute mark, as backing vocals create this melody-filled helium balloon, rising to the top of the mix, all before the song sort of meanders into the creative guitar interlude. This track appears on Alternate Endings, which will be released on August 27th via Spunk.

 

Pleased to Meet You: The Belair Lip Bombs

Figured we’d spend a little time hanging out in Melbourne on the site today, so we’ll begin with a little love for The Belair Lip Bombs. At the moment, this single’s just a one off, and it’s self-released, though singer Maisie is currently on Chapter Music‘s roster with her other band CLAMM. So, this track we’ve got is sort of a classic college rock bop; it’s all begun by a muted little riff and vocals running over a stomping beat that keeps the song in place. But, quickly the track erupts, detailing Maisie’s thoughts on the “confusion of relationships in your early twenties;” it bounces back and forth between forceful bursts of pop and steadied melodic charms. Honestly, despite the band’s Aussie locale, this feels very much in the vein of what you’d come to expect from a slew of pop rock acts in the States, so it should be universally loved. Play it a few times and tell me I’m wrong.

Bnny Share Sure Video

Seems like my listening approach today is the dizzying spell of slow-core pop, and I don’t mind that one bit. After that great Cindy tune this morning, we’ve now got this striking new tune form Bnny. Jess Viscius dominates the tune, wielding her voice like a steady stream of fog creeping into your listening room. Everything behind her voice sounds so forlorn and lonesome, like we’re lost out on the road, driving to nowhere. But, the video seems to illustrate some themes of finding companionship, so through the fog and wandering, there’s promise here, or at least the possibility of it. Another chance to immerse yourself in Bnny before Everything drops via Fire Talk on August 20th.

Cindy Announce 1:2 LP + Share New Single

If you haven’t gotten on the Cindy train just yet, well, you better hurry, as they’re isn’t a bunch of room, particularly with the band selling out each time they drop an album. Today they announce the new 1:2 LP for Mt. St. Mtn. and Tough Love, and it’s a striking follow-up to Free Advice. Karina Gill is clearly the star of the show, her voice brimming with this quiet soulfulness; I love the airiness to, breezing through your ears. Of course, while Gill signs, the band’s perfect accents only elevate things. Guitars lightly jangle, hanging in midair, much like Karina’s voice; the keys create an emotionally nuanced atmosphere; the drums hang for rhythm, but stay to of the way to let the rest shine. The new LP will be out on October 1st (vinyl follows in November).

Upset the Rhythm Announces Normil Hawaiians: Dark World

One of our favorite labels Upset the Rhythm has been working diligently to make sure that the world doesn’t forget the work of Normil Hawaiians; today they announce Dark World. In this collection you’ll get to hear the band in the years 1979-1981, working at breakneck pace trying to find their sound; you’ll get two 7″ worth of tunes , the Gala Failed EP, and a few Peel Sessions to flesh out the collection. The title track for the collection, “Dark World,” seems to encompass the whole of the band’s period here, opening up sharp and jagged, drums pacing back and forth with a stomp, all the while you’ve got Guy screaming and bellowing, anxious at times, satiated at others. Such a productive period, and now we get to reap the rewards. Dark World is out on September 24th; Grab it HERE.
