Hunter Cahill Shares Goddamn Single

When you press play on this new track from Hunter Cahill, you’ll get a muted guitar that opens up into the perfect rock ballad; it kicks in with this perfect punch of classic indie rock. Cahill has some vocal similarities to David Bazan, which definitely drew me into this tune, but I think the best moments here revolve around the chorus, allowing the guitars to hang up in the air, before crashing down with this emotional punch that eventually evolves into this soaring melodic burst. If you dig what you hear, keep an ear out, as Cahill will be releasing a new single every month as he gears up to share his new LP!

RF Shannon Share Dublin Texas Video

It’s been a few years since RF Shannon last graced us with a full length, and it looks like we’ll have to wait as the band are in the studio putting on finishing touches to the follow up to the excellent Rain on Dust. But, they’ve tossed out this new single to tide us over in the meantime, a brilliant mix between sea shanty and smoky barnstormer. Despite Shane Renfro’s tumbleweed-like voice rolling across the song’s horizon, there are a few moments when the spirit shines through like at the 1:38 mark where you get this slight chill running up your spine. Another striking entry into the band’s catalog, and just enough brilliance to hold us over ’til the new LP is ready. Oh, and hats off to Jordan Moser for the direction on the video, which features some really great visual images spliced with live band footage; the track appears courtesy of Keeled Scales.

 

The Head Share New Single

Atlanta’s The Head just dropped this great new single, and I feel like its definitely up my tastes as of late. Of course, on “French Girls,” there’s soft jangling, swirling and turning in the front of the mix; it’s part nostalgic pop and pop modern jangling. I’d be remiss if I didn’t give the band a little nod for the heavy tones of the vocals, which definitely will hit your ears in that Moz territory, though hopefully with a sweeter soul. Then you also get “Slipping Away,” which sort of peels away the upbeat energy in favor of a more subtle affair; I mean, pardon the obviousness here, but the song does feel like its sort of “slipping away” through your fingers. Both tunes are hits, so dig in.

Capitol Announce All the Rest of My Heads EP

When you press play on this new track from Capitol you’re greeted with this ringing wash of dreamy guitars, swirling and spinning inside your ear canals. But, eventually the rhythm section takes control, united by the vocals to deliver this energetic bob that settles the band into this beautiful post-punk groove. Still, those guitars shimmer on the edges, still giving this ethereal quality to the band’s sound. Those angular notes keep the song tethered to to that danceable brand of dream pop, with the vocals forcing the issue by trying to match the bass step for step as the song pushes on. Good energy, nice wash of sound, good hit in the end. This tune appears on the band’s All the Rest of My Heads EP, out this September via Meritorio Records.

Zachman Shares I Just Wanted to Be Well Video

Today seems like as good a day as any to just push out a bunch of incredible endearing pop rock tunes out into the world, so why not share this new video from Zachman! First, the song’s got tons of Austin love in it, with the footage covering the area near ATX’s Pennybacker Bridge, and being shot/directed by our friend Roger Ho! Still, the song has to offer something too, right? From the galloping drum lines to those ringing guitar jangles, it’s hard to find yourself not captivated by the natural exuberance that pervades this track. Plus, the video carries that spirit with a smiling performance from Johnny Zachman that shines right through the screen; his infectious spirit makes the song all the more endearing for me. You’ll find this track on the band’s forthcoming Lotto EP, but if you need a dose of that joy, stop by and catch the band sharing it live on June 23rd over at the Far Out Lounge.

The Chairman Dances Share New Single

The Chairman Dances are one of those bands that you treasure, keeping to yourself, except, when you can’t, because you want everyone to enjoy. You’ll find this single on the forthcoming LP, the Strength of Your Arm, which comes out at the end of July. For me, this song flirts with branding itself as sort of an indiepop tune, though you could easily just file it under a mellow brand of exploratory indie rock. The vocals are feathery, with light jangling bits coursing through the tune; I’ll be honest, however, as I feel there’s some resemblance here to the early charms of Death Cab, with the group really working to build in some textural elements throughout.

Check Out This New Doug Tuttle Tune

Probably not a bad day when you get to enjoy a new track from Doug Tuttle, not to mention it coming with a fresh EP announcement. I love how steady this tune is, mostly working with Tuttle’s guitar setting up the coolness of his voice. In a weird way, it kind of feels like Doug’s doing a GBV impersonation of a Tom Petty cover, so he’s sort of zeroed in on really classic pop rock sounds with just a hint of modern flare. There’s a nice little fuzzy solo burning through near the end, but the voice here is still getting the gold star on my end. Pinecone EP is being released by Wild Honey on July 9th.

Mt Misery Share Taken by the Tide

There’s something really special in store for those that are willing to take some time to sit back and listen to Mt. Misery. The Hartlepool act have this very casual pop style going on, somewhere that toys with the modern guitar pop sounds of Real Estate, though looks upon the melodic nature of some of the best in Aussie pop; it’s sort of a cross between jangling indiepop and every band you’ve been told to love. Their take is perfect, and I love the fact that the vocals have this distinctive clarity that lets you ride with the melody on your back and a smile on your face. Once Home, No Longer is out June 25th via Prefect Records.

Grace and Elliott Share Beauty Queen

I’m not going to lie, when reading about Grace and Elliott, I had to look up the Island of Guernsey where they live (it’s in the English Channel). But, one thing I was assured of was the power of Grace’s voice; it was striking from the very minute the first verse comes into play. At times it appears fragile, like it could shatter in thin air, but other moments it’s purely passion, like a fiery roar from the deepest regions of her soul. Plus, you mix that in with the emotive quality of the interplay between guitar and bass, and well, these two had me wrapped around their finger in an instant, so I reckoned I should put that before you!

New Music from Alex Riegelman

Are we Alex Riegelman stans? Uh, you bet we are! And why wouldn’t we be, as Alex is one of the kind souls of Austin’s music scene…and that doesn’t even scratch the surface of his songwriting ability. On his latest single “Once” you get to hear the other side of Alex (who stars in Big Bill), as he’s offering up this shuffling little pop number, fueled by these lightly jangling guitar riffs and uplifting synth lines. Honestly, the star, for me, is Alex’s vocal performance; I thought his opening verses were great, but then he erupts to let his pipes soar along with his guitar chops! Damn, that breakdown in the song’s close is stupendous. Get you some Alex!
