More From Martin Crane

martinWe’ve already heard the title track of Martin Crane‘s new LP Physical Therapy which got us all excited to hear even more new music.  Today he’s appeasing our desires with this sweet new song entitled “Gunk of Stars”.  This one is even more upbeat and poppy when compared to the first single (which was hella catchy in it’s own way).  I’d dare say we have a true pop gem on our hands here folks.  Look at Crane, being all accessible and shit.

Once again, don’t forget to pick up Physical Therapy on November 20th via INSCAPE.

ATX Spotlight: Hear New Total Unicorn + Show @ Cheer Ups (10.30)

unicornNot to be redundant, but Friday night looks like a hot night in town for show-goers. One of the things on our list is to hit up the SHMU album release at Cheer Ups. But, as equality is of great import, you should also know that Total Unicorn will be there too, celebrating the release of their Relaxation Tape. Listening to this tape, you’re likely to be surprised by the broad range of influences the group is using in their work. There’s musical nods to EDM, electronica, hip-hop and even touches of operatic indie rock; you’ve got to take your hats off to the group’s ability to incorporate so much into their music, yet still make it accessible to pop fans. It’s, dare I say, the “total” package, musically speaking. Be sure to check the group out tomorrow night, and don’t forget to grab yourself a tape.

ATX Spotlight: Isaiah the Mosaic Release Heroin Island

isaiahIsaiah the Mosaic has been making waves in the Austin music community for the last few years, but interestingly enough, they don’t have too much recorded material to offer the masses, aside from their Systems EP. Perhaps some change is on the horizon as the group have just released a brand new single for your ears. It’s got trickling samples working in the front of the song, waiting for the entrance of the warm washing vocals. The pace is relaxed, offering more a steadying hand to the group’s electronic dream world; I will say the live setting is always far from relaxed, so it’s nice to hear a studio version. Hopefully we hear more from the group in the near future.

I Missed Junior Boys

atm-junior-boys1While I admit that I have a sparing interest in most electronic music, I’ve always had a fondness for Junior Boys. They’ve somehow managed to consistently create pop hooks within their songs that otherwise seem like dark cavernous tracks. It’s not an easy juxtaposition to pull off, but I feel like they’ve been able to continue their approach by dragging out songs beyond their expected time stamps; it allows for turns and folds, much like we find in this new jam. Finally we’ll get an entire new album from the duo; it’s titled Big Black Coat and is slated for a February release via City Slang.

New Track from Brass Bed

brassbedIf you ask people who spend their time scouring the net for great tunes, you’re likely to hear their opinion that The Secret Will Keep You is one of those untouched gems that was overlooked by far too many people. So with that, expectations for Brass Bed are really high as we head into the cycle for their new album. This new single definitely pushes things in the right direction; it’s got an incredible beat and these swirling guitars working right behind the vocal. Just picture an upbeat song by the Walkmen, filled with an airy vocal, and you’ll know just why this succeeds. The single comes out next week, but look for a full length in early 2016 via Modern Outsider.

Fresh Track from Winter

WinterI know there’s always tons to filter through when it regards to SXSW, but one of the bands I caught last year that I picked for success in the upcoming year was Winter. And, here they are with a great new single that looks to be part of their follow up to the excellent Supreme Blue Dream. It’s filled with this shimmering guitar that casually drifts through the song, though the guitars crash with a nice fuzzy wave during the chorus, perfectly matching the vocal of Samira. No official word on the single’s release or a new record, but based on the buzz, expect to hear more from the band soon…also catch them touring the states, including an Austin date at Hotel Vegas.

GOGGS Should Come As No Surprise

goggsReally, the music being pumped out of your speakers should come as no surprise at all to you, especially if you love Ty Segall and Ex-Cult. Both of those bands have had really successful careers, especially in the last few years. Ty and Chris Shaw, along with Charles from Fuzz, have created GOGGS, and it’s every bit a rocker as you would expect from a band comprising the three. It’s heavy on the riffs, with Shaw’s snotty growl pummeling your ears in a manner that very few can pull off. In a week where a majority of the tunes have been pretty calm, this rocker is a much need respite. Look for the debut single from the group to hit in November via In the Red Records.

New Tune from The Heart Strings

10616721_10153415901879596_5891930795245722178_nIt’s been a little bit since we heard from The Heart Strings, so I wanted to toss up this brand new single today to catch your ears. Songwriter Todd Roache has a producer’s touch, which is really evident in his pop constructs; you can hear the dedication to extracting each melody perfectly in every little note on this single. For listeners, it holds a bright tone, both musically and in the lyrical content, but be forewarned, Todd tells us that his music’s about to take a darker turn on his next few singles. Without further adieu, here’s your pop hit for the day.

Spiritual Song from Cats of Transnistria

catsSometimes I stumble upon incredible songs, wondering to myself how on Earth I wouldn’t post it…this is what happened with this brand new Cats of Transnistria single the band released today. The song consists mostly of lightly picked guitar notes, touched every so carefully so as to allow the strings to ring on for a bit as new notes are picked; it creates a quieted wall of sound that allows for the airy vocal entrance Henna.  Her voice spectacularly floats in, floats out, fades away and is occasionally obscured by these brief bursts of discordant guitar.  It’s one of those songs you can’t pull yourself away from, so that’s a perfect way to start off your week. This is their first new material since their Away EP, which you can grab from Soliti Records…just until we wait more great music from the duo.

Pleased to Meet You: Ne-Hi

neehighFeel like it’s been rather slow as of late with the music coming our way, which is fair enough for the time of year.  So, when I got sent this Ne-Hi track, I was stoked, to say the least.  Upon first listen, it reminds me of a relaxed version of The Feelies, using great rhythm to propel the song forward, whilst employing these slightly angular guitar chords and semi-chanted lyrics.  The Chicago outfit is about ready to head out on a nice little nationwide tour in August, including an Austin date on August 24th. Check this new hit out.
