Wurld Series Are Back with The Giant’s Lawn

A few years removed from the excellent What’s Growing, New Zealand’s Wurld Series are back with a fresh record! And, like only Wurld Series can, they offer us two singles, and in that, offer us two ways to look at the new LP. Opening track, “The Giant’s Lawn Part 1,” is more of an experimental bit of pastoral folk, almost an oddball bit of atmospherics and horn blasts before settling into a meditative introduction to the album that will follow. There’s even a nice little accompanying felt video HERE, if you’re inclined. On the other head of the beast you get “Lord of Shelves,” which smashes in with a fuzzy bit of lo-fi pop. It reminds me in spots of GBV, having both a penchant for noise and melodic alike, making it hard to differentiate between the two. Excited for The Giant’s Lawn, out on November 17th via Meritorio Records and Melted Ice Cream.

Good Morning Drop Two New Singles

It seems like our pals in Melbourne based Good Morning have been a mainstay on these pages for many years now and we always eagerly await new music from the band. Imagine the excitement when today we got word of not one, but two new singles as part of a new double release through their label Polyvinyl. The first track, “dog years,” features that familiar, jangly sound from the lads while the second track “queen of comedy,” is a more somber and mellow tune. Somehow both compliment each other beautifully.

And hey! Good Morning are coming to Austin later this month with Frankie Cosmos at Mohawk. Tickets are available now.

TVs Daniel Preps Never Change

Daniel Fried has been one of our favorite artists in the Austin scene, playing with Bad Sports and leading Video, but as of late, he’s been focusing on TVs Daniel. The group will be dropping a new LP, Never Change, in just a few weeks, so I wanted to put it on people’s radar outside of our fair city. There’s definitely a bit of a pop tilt in the songwriting on the singles below, though Fried’s past breathes a bit of tenacity into hook-laden rock n’ roll. You’re guaranteed to have a bit of fun, and still walk away feeling like you’re tough as nails; look for the record on September 22nd.

Sundozer Share Double Single

Sundozer quickly amassing a collection of great songs, not to mention great musicians in their line-up; the newest singles feature Danny Reisch on percussion. Speaking of those new tracks, they’re taking their gloomy post-punk tones and spinning them in this glittery pop fashion. On “Charmed,” the bass bubbles as these little shimmering crystals fall into your ears; I love the way there’s these little syllabic punches delivered in the vocals on this tune too during the verses. There’s this great little turn before the 2 minute mark that opens up the song to this more vast vibe that stretches into a stabbing guitar piece atop the bass line. “100 Lives” has a different pulse to it, something that feels naturally frantic and energized. I love how the project keeps the mood circling about here, whilst still capable of kicking in some energy around those quick little jangles. One of my favorite ATX acts, so keep an ear out.

Last Week’s Jams (8.7 – 8.11)

Admittedly, we might have outdone ourselves last week; I’m fairly certain I’m the one to blame. Somehow, we tossed up 40 songs, though a few are unavailable in the streaming sites, so you’ve only got 38 tracks on this week’s playlist. There’s a ton of Austin stuff, with new music from Daiistar, Semihelix, Half Dream and more…obligatory A Giant Dog is in there and such. Plus, still continuously impressed by the magic that is Prewn. Oh, and Australia’s buzzing at the moment, and their music isn’t half-bad either, with new tracks from the Small Intestines and Soft Covers being considered as must listens. So, if you’ve got an hour or two to kill…go on and stream!

A Beacon School Announce First LP in 5 Years

Patrick J Smith has taken some time between his last A Beacon School LP, but he’s ready to put that aside and let us all indulge in yoyo, his brand new record. You get a couple of sneak peeks today, with the sparkling pop of “Potion” sure to grab you with its immediacy and melodic core. “Jon,” on the other hand, is more extravagant, like a mini suite built for the dance club or late night drives under city lights; it carries this extra life force to it that will have you marveling. Both tunes provide a glimpse of what’s to come, letting us know that Smith’s time away from a proper LP might be to our benefit, as both tracks are easily digestible pieces of great pop. yoyo is out on October 13th via Grind Select.

Chime-ing New Stuff from Slumberland Records

Friday was a busy day around these parts, but it seems like it was even busier for those over at Slumberland headquarters. The cherished label got some coverage from us via a new Reds, Pinks and Purples single, but we missed out on some other exciting new stuff, so I wanted to be sure we had that up there. After their great self-titled LP, Chime School came back with a brand new hit from their forthcoming 7″ (out in April). Not to be outdone, or out-chimed, Ohioan power-poppers the Laughing Chimes dropped another charmer through the label. Sorry I didn’t get this all up on Friday, but better late than never?

Swim Camp Share Two New Singles

In precisely ten days, Swim Camp will release Steel Country, and with that, there are two brand new singles to stream today that should catch your ear. For me, the songs really do carry the true identity of bedroom pop; they have such an emotional draw to them that you can’t help but put yourself laying on the floor of your best friends house as they shared their latest composition. But, what I love is the obscuring of the edges, building in added textural layers, or noise (as in the case of “Apple”) that really switch your expectations of what the genre entails. It’s like a musical anxiety blanket for the folks that continue to search for their spot in the world. Steel Country drops on February 24th via Julia’s War Recordings.

Split Cassette Coming from Mythical Motors and Antlered Auntlord

I love the concept of a split tape; it’s like a perfect sampler platter…little bit of this here, little bit of that there…and hopefully it’s all delicious. In the case of the Mythical Motors/Antlered Auntolord Split Tape, well, it’s all tasty to me. Mythical Motors is a relatively new band, to me, and they’re just ripping up these sunny pop tunes; this single below falls somewhere between the punch of GBV and the pop vibes of Superdrag (which is a compliment!). Antlered Auntlord, on the other hand, are always going to give you something that feels a touch more raucous and devil-may-care. Their tune below is a bit of noise, a sprinkle of driving punk, all built around a central melody that brings a smile to your face! If you dig, as you should, why not grab the tape from HHBTM today!

Slow Rosary Prepare Free Wifi in the Vatican

I fell in love with Slow Rosary last year when they dropped their album Refinery, and they’re already back with a brand new collection of songs for Free Wifi in the Vatican. You can tell on the first of these two tracks that things feel different; the tune almost has this sort of cacophonous, early Arcade Fire vibe to it, albeit one spun through the band’s unique discussion on the underbelly of Catholicism. It’s exciting to hear the band return to the fold so quickly, and this one’s shaping up to really stretch their sound into something spectacular. Free Wifi in the Vaticandrops on June 24th.
