The Orchids Share I Never Thought I Was Clever Video

Earlier this year, the Orchids made a bold return with their brilliant new Dreaming Kind LP; the record is full of great pop tunes, and we get a chance to reinforce that today by sharing the video for “I Never Thought I Was Clever.” The video captures a blossoming relationship, spliced with some live footage and a little political nod; it’s great storytelling if you’re here for that. Me, I just love the tune. It takes a minute to really dive into the meat of the track, offering a silky little vocal over light accompaniment from the group. Just as you creep towards the 1 minute mark, the drums pick up and the song turns into this wistful pop tune that will carry you into daydream nation. GIFT Release New Single, Share the Present

Sometimes a band’s sound just hits all the right notes, such as GIFT‘s latest track from their forthcoming debut album, Momentary Presence. It’s a familiar sound, especially for those of you visiting this site, using a propulsive drum beat to kick start the song’s vibe, only to allow a wash of atmospherics to drift atop and coat it in this dense dreaminess. The vocals don’t do much to stray you away, holding you in their arms as they wrap you in the darkened pop sound. But, the importance revolves around the messaging, reminding us to stay in the present, focus on what’s around you, good or bad, share it! Momentary Presence is out next Friday via Dedstrange.

Video Premiere: Fujiya & Miyagi Drop New Body Language

Brighton based Fujiya & Miyagi is simply one of the most well known names in the indie electronic pop game, having started their musical career over twenty years ago. Nathan and I have really been seeing the tunes coming out this year as a welcome return to the band’s engaging, dance pop ways. So naturally we were thrilled and excited when asked to premiere this new single with accompanying video for “New Body Language”. This, sure to be on your weekend party mix, song will be the last track released before new album Slight Variations is released on Friday. Pre-orders are currently live for digital and physical releases of the LP.

Here’s some words from David Best on both the track and the video:

Track: “New body Language is probably the most instant and accessible song on the record. We took a lot of our current listening habits and put them in a blender till it turned out like us.”

Evripidis and His Tragedies Share Alegre Persona Triste

After our DJ set last night, I came home to find an email from Evripidis and His Tragedies; I knew immediately that this would be the tune that would start off our day, and perhaps yours. The track has this nostalgic bent to it, like the best of classic synth pop from the 80s, which matches up with the video’s goal to take from the likes of Grace Jones and Peter Gabriel. There’s a whole lot of bounce and natural joy that resonates from the way the song was constructed, with dual vocal harmonies hitting all the right notes. It’s subtly satisfying, but punch enough to get you going this morning.

Have Another Hit From Disq

My Wisconsin based pals in Disq are really looking like they’ll be releasing one of my top albums of the year in the next few weeks. We’ve already released one banger of a single from the upcoming album, with now another one entitled “The Hardest Part” dropping today. I love this band’s ability to show a clear alt-rock, sort of Midwest inspiration with these delicate hints of shoegaze and emotion for a remarkable sound, truly their own. You’ll definitely want to go ahead and pre-order the new album, Desperately Imagining Someplace Quiet, coming out on October 7th via Saddle Creek. It’s stunning.

Another Jam from Well Wisher

If you’re in need of heavy pop rock riffs and a blast of hooks, might I suggest diving into Well Wisher this morning? The band are my current go-to for sweet pop rock, replacing Weakened Friends momentarily. I love that there’s not a lot of extemporaneous bullshit here, just a straight-ahead rocker with Natalie Newbold’s voice doing all it can to be sure there’s just enough hooks to hold the listener’s attention from start to finish. Lyrically, it’s all about self-deprecation, just showing us how much fun we can have while feeling sorry for ourselves. The band’s album That Weight just dropped via Egghunt, so be sure to check it!

The Intelligence Share Keyed Beamers + Announce Lil Peril

Every time I listen to the Intelligence, I just run this gamut of self-doubt. Am I cool enough to listen to this band? Will I even really get at what they’re doing? Somehow, I always end up gravitating towards a cliche Wayne’s World “we’re not worthy” moment…which again, seems to suffice with the newest single. It’s this disorienting piecemeal tune, bits of sticky cymbal work, primal electronic pulses, with Lars Finberg crafting his poetic lines so as to weave around the amps like a jumbled pile of chords. Then the song stutters, only to shriek back into place, plodding along with more texture, seemingly, only to remind us that we need to check our expectations of rock n’ roll at the door. With this jam comes great news; the band will release Lil’ Peril via Mt. St. Mtn. on September 30th.

Aluminum Share Windowpanes Video

A few weeks ago we were catching up with our friends over at Dandy Boy Records; they had just recently announced a killer 12″ EP from Aluminum…and now we’ve got a video for that accompany single, just as a reminder of what should be on your radar. The more I listen to this tune, the more I’m drawn to the propulsive nature of verses; it’s matched up right up with the way the video was shot, meant “to capture the wide-eyed feelings of youth.” It’s the perfect set up for the acidic wash of noise that bursts in through the almost-chorus, blurring the lines between our expectations and how far the group are willing to take their sound. The Windowpane EP is out on October 7th, so don’t forget to grab it right now!

Pete Astor Shares Fine and Dandy Video

The first single we heard from Pete Astor‘s new album was a long burner, but since that track’s release, Pete’s been focusing on the quicker ditties, like this delightful new jam. I love the burning stomp of the guitar here, kind of bringing in a bit of old school classic rock to Pete’s repertoire. Still, when you get to the charm of the chorus, that’s Astor’s bread and butter, bringing in this blanketing melody that certainly warrants at least a dozen repeat listens. If you’re digging on the vibe, as you should, then be sure that Time on Earth is on your radar when it drops on October 7th via Tapete Records.

Broken Baby Drop Make Manager Video

Sometimes you just need a straight rock tune to clear the cobwebs in your brain, something to clean the stress out. Well, if you’re in that boat, turn up this new track and video from Broken Baby; it’s a song that will draw some comparisons to Amyl/Sniffers, particularly in the way the vocals have that biting sharpness that seems to warn the listener to back up…though you could also hear it being a riotous performance in the live setting. Speaking of that live setting, the band have a nice little mini tour going on this week and next with our own ATX friends in Calliope Musicals, coming to Austin on the 16th.
