Skloss Share Veto Powder

After dropping The Pattern Speaks, Skloss are back at it this year with a brand new single, bringing their thunderous brand of psychedelia to the masses. Sandy’s heavy guitar wailing continuously builds this massive wave of noise that shatters the cones in your speakers, but it only works with Karen’s drum work. Every song they play, she’s banging those drums like its the last set on Earth and she’s determined to break it into pieces. They offer some heavily affected vocals this round, bringing in a bit of that sort of interstellar-psych mood into the picture. They’re currently over in the UK hitting a few shows, then they come back to win over audiences at Levitation!

Caleb Nichols Shares Slate Age Video

Just a few months out from the release of the new Caleb Nichols record, and I feel like the single we’re offering you today might be the finest of the collection. There’s an understated jangle element to this jam, which certainly pulled on my ears, particularly when it mingled with the stomp of the drum to kick off a proper rhythm. Nichol’s, for his part, offers another charm, kind of like the missing link between Jason Quever of Papercuts and Elliott Smith; it’s a nice mixture of sounds that welcomes listeners with such ease that you’ll have an impossible time turning this one off. Stone Age is Back comes out on October 5th via Royal Oakie.

Pleased to Meet You: Spotless Souls

Fresh off of celebrating their Europa League triumph, our friends over at Soliti Music have just picked up a new artist to keep our eyes on: Spotless Souls. Their debut single is out today, and it drops a hint that not all dream pop should be treated equally, or elegantly. This Finnish quartet have adopted the cavernous sound on the genre, but instead of overflowing the front of the mix with noise, they’ve pulled back a bit, letting vocalist Alina take the spotlight. Don’t get me wrong, her vocals operate in the dreamy category, but by letting the chime of the guitars sit behind her, there’s a larger focus on the siren-esque performance. Look for more from the group in the near future!

Galore Share Bastard Video

There is something so powerful about the jangling of a guitar that just makes the world open and say awesome, like on this new Galore track. You can’t deny that the minute they started chugging away at those jagged riffs that your spirit instantly picked up, much like the joy the band takes in smashing things throughout the accompanying video. The vocals do a lot to carry the song as well, switching back and forth between the wistful dreaminess of indiepop and an emphatic punch up when the whole gang joins in on the fun. Everything about this track just feels like this is the world we should be living for, so grab Dirt from Speakeasy Studios SF on July 25th.

Teethe Release Holy Water

The title track from Teethe‘s forthcoming Magic of the Sale LP was a banger, and they’re following that up with another powerful single, moving their work to the front of the line in “Must Listens” for the year. It instantly rains down heavy guitars upon the listener, though I can’t help but hear that synth line punctuating and setting up the pop sensibility and Madeline Dowd’s vocals. The chorus combines all the swirling vocals into one magical ball of noise, and the combined vocal effect maintains that syrupy treat at the core. If anyone is perfecting the loud/quiet contrast better than this lot, I haven’t heard it! Their new LP is out August 8th via Winspear.

Gelli Haha Shares Spit Video

When you find yourself stuck in a musical rut, sometimes you just need to kick over your chair, stand up and dance…and what better way to get started than by cranking up this new Gelli Haha track. A self-imposed rule of only using “S” words creates this artistic layer to the project, along with the incredible video by David Gutel that has Gelli strapped into some absurd scientific experiment. For me, I got locked into this groove, wrapped around a tight little punch that feels like you’re running in place at full steam. It’s propulsive, but stationary, locked into this groove that forces your body to convulse in a freeing fashion. Not sure what all that means? Press play below and grab Switcheroo on June 27th from Innovative Leisure.

The Beths Return with Metal

The Beth‘s have been mostly silent since their deluxe reissue of Expert in a Dying Field. But, they’re about to set off on a huge North American tour, and what better way to kick off the excitement than by dropping a brand new single? Today they bring you, “Metal,” returning with this perfect brightness for Springtime, marching through with this steady snare roll and light-hearted jangling on the guitar, allowing Elizabeth Stokes to weave her vocal magic. It’s definitely a pop focused tune, playing into the band’s lighter side, perhaps hinting at what we can expect on their next album. Speaking of a new album, today’s new jam comes with the announcement of the band’s signing to Anti Records too!

Fotoform This City is Over

Friday’s a busy day on the release schedule, and Fotoform will be dropping their latest effort, Grief is a Garden (Forever in Bloom). Alas, you can’t head into the weekend without one last convincing hint at the record, like the latest single “The City is Over.” This go round, the entirety of the song is a personal reclamation of meaning in our life, realizing that goals and expectations are part of the cyclical nature of modernity, and as such, are destructive forces in our lives. All of this is supported by a shiny bit of industrial-influenced dream pop, filled by hazy guitar lines and a exploring the negative space with bubblegum melodies. Grab the LP this Friday!

New Single from MIEN

It’s got to be a great feeling to be working with friends, as is the case with the members of MIEN (all who have heavy psych pedigrees); they seem to sort of let their influences billow and bear fruit when fitting, never staying in one place for too long. This new number is a hypnotic event, that for some reason feels like it’s some underwater Massive Attack move; Alex’s vocals have this quieted constraint, and the effects definitely give that vibe of being just beneath surface water. But, while that natural pulse makes its way, the song eventually erupts with bits of screaming fuzz, hanging out in the far distance as the edges get washed out through your speakers. Just a reminder their new self-titled LP is out on April 18th via Fuzz Club.

Another Jeffrey Lewis Single

Next Friday the new Jeffrey Lewis album will drop for the masses, and before it hits, the label’s shared one more single to entice us, by way of a lyric video. After spending a lot of time this week watching rock n’ roll, Lewis’ style has this warming simplicity; it’s mostly operating with a heavy strum and a light tambourine jangle. His lyricism and distinctive delivery are on full display, with the lyrics rushing through to match the formatting of the video’s lyrical work. The tune is a reminder that adoring fans will be quite pleased when The Even More Freewheelin’ Jeffrey Lewis drops March 21st via Don Giovanni.
