unnamed (3)North Carolina based Echo Courts caught my ear last month with new single “Set Me Free” in all its psych pop glory. Well now the band has just released another new single entitled “Control” in preparation for their upcoming debut LP. This one is even brighter and sunnier than the previous single and I’m sure it will be making your end of summer playlist. I told you more of that would be coming your way right?

Debut LP In The Garden is coming on August 19th via Negative Fun Records.

Here’s yet another song called “Set Me Free” from North Carolina based Echo Courts sure to reach the top of your summer playlist. It’s bright, it’s sunny and I don’t see anyone denying the good vibes coming through here.

Mellow Folk from River Whyless

riversAs I speak, the weather here in Austin has grown increasingly frigid (which I abhor), so I just want to bundle up and jam to something warming (wearing out my Sturgill Simpson LP).  This River Whyless single should definitely do the trick, offering up some ornate folk music.  From the picking of the guitar to the burst of cymbal crashes, you can tell that there’s been great care put into each touch on their new work.  It’s the sort of music that provides emotional warmth while allowing for the lyrics to carry your mind away. Look for their self-titled EP on January 20th via Backwoods Nation.

Orchestral Pop from The Collection

collectionYou thought Austin’s East Cameron Folkcore had a lot of members, then you need to check out the Collection.  The North Carolina collective ranges anywhere from 13-18 members, and the music they’re crafting is pushing the boundaries of grandiose.  This single below swells, not only with insturmentation, but with an inner spirit, which is why I’ve found myself so attracted to this song. They completed Ars Moriendi, their latest releasep; it will be released on July 15th.  Not going to lie, I expect big things from such a big group, so hopefully they live up to my lofty expectations.

Sometimes when you maintain a music blog for years, you get a little inundated with the same old genres and musical styles in the indie scene today.  I’m even guilty of often going along with it and pigeonholing myself into specific genres that I like while flat out ignoring the sounds I usually don’t find interesting.  It’s not what we are supposed to do as music journalists right?  Today I broke my trend, giving this song called “Death Magic” a chance, and I’m really glad that I did.  Coming to us from Asheville, NC based pop hit makers RBTS WIN, one can find a lot to like in the simplicity of what’s going on here. What starts as a synth laden pop number with head nodding beats, evolves into this creative R&B tune sure to be worthy of repeat listens.  Something about this song is really doing it for me today.

Sure, it adds intrigue, but it also seems like the artists is making a statement like “hey, you don’t need to know me, just listen to my music.”  In the case of Jackson Scott I’m completely okay with that attitude, especially considering the songs are so ridiculously good.  There’s definitely a creepy vibe going on in these lo-fi pop jams, but I can’t help but find myself completely sucked in to the songwriting. He’s currently giving away his album, Melbourne, right now, so go HERE and get lost in his world.
