Free Week In Austin!

freeweekWe’re back, and just in time for free week in Austin!  Where were we during this holiday season?  None of your damn business!  So as we get back into regular posting mode for 2010 let’s go over a few recommendations for you upcoming week of free shows.  We’ll give you one, yes just one, recommendation for each night starting tomorrow.  If we haven’t made it crystal clear already, all of these shows are completely free if you are 21+.  Happy New Year!

Tue(1/5): Red 7 with Cruiserweight, Lemuria, O’Pioneers!!!, and The Anchor @ 9pm

Wed(1/6): Emos outside with Brothers & Sisters, The Laughing, Ovenbirds, Oh No Oh My @ 9pm

Thu(1/7): Mohawk outside/inside with Brazos, TV Torso, Great Nostalgic, Ume, Transmography, Daniel Francis Doyle, and Many Birthdays @ 9pm.  (If you aren’t watching the national championship game of course)

Fri(1/8): Emos inside with Ume, Speak, The Authors, The White White Lights @ 9pm

Sat(1/9): Stubbs inside with Leatherbag, The Pons, and Danny Malone @ 9pm

Sun(1/10): Emos inside/outside with A Giant Dog, Bad Sports, Cause For Applause, Elvis, Red X Red M, Woodgrain, Eagle Claw, ODEZCO, and Expensive Shit @ 9pm

All times are for doors opening and not start times for music.  Shows will generally start around 10pm at each venue.  Please remember that this is not a complete list of free shows for the week and one can check out the Mohawk, Emos, Red 7, Beerland, Stubbs, Beauty Bar and Parish websites for a full list of shows.

The Parish has a great show going down on Friday night with 2 solid local bands and one out of towner.  Locals Lemurs and The Laughing will be on hand to open things up for headliners Givers.  Never had a chance to catch these guys live so I’m excited to see what they bring to the table.

Quiet Company @ The Parish (12/7)

One of Austin’s finest, Quiet Company, have an intimate show planned at The Parish tonight.  We realize it’s a little short on notice, but it should be worth your time.  Fellow locals Frank and Derol and Windsor Drive will also be performing on the Parish stage.

If you’re appetite for live music hasn’t been quenched by the madness that is ACL, make your way to the Parish on Monday night for a set by Oxford, MS band Colour Revolt.  Local support will be provided by Winston Audio and Ume.  Now we’ve seen this band a few times before and we can honestly say that this one will be worth wiping the dust off your face and shaking off your ACL hangover.

More New Music From A.A. Bondy

Last month we dropped a new A.A. Bondy track on you and now that the release date for his new album draws nearer, we have another incredible new song for you to check out.  This one is called “I Can See the Pines are Dancing” and will also appear on upcoming album When the Devil’s Loose due out September 1st on Fat Possum Records.  Also don’t forget that Mr. Bondy will be dropping by Austin on November 13th in support of Elvis Perkins at the Parish.

FT5: Best Austin Music Venues

0814top5coverWe spent a lot of time this week debating our favorite venue.  What constitutes the perfect place to catch a show?  Is it sound alone, or beer prices?  Maybe it’s both.  We decided that we wanted to narrow it down to the best five places in town where you’ll most likely see one of us, or one of our favorite bands playing.  We even developed a rating system for them.  We’ll be using our typical 5 Star system (1 being the lowest, 5 the highest) to rate the following areas: Sound Quality, Band Quality, Beer Prices, Atmosphere, and Mobility during packed shows.
