Last Week’s Jams (4.14 – 4.18)
A fairly busy week as we got a little more back on routine writing last week, and we were especially excited for all the pop fans out there. New stuff from Jeanines, the Perfect English Weather, Lightheaded, and Lost Film had what cures the ills, and man, were there some special tracks mentioned above. Circled around to hear some Austin, and Austin adjacent stuff with Little Marzarn, BS and former ATX resident Lauren Green and Tan Cologne. Plus, M. Maly gave us a peek at what’s in store for Pscyh Fest, throwing in some coverage with King Hannah being highlighted on the playlist. Plus, great new albums from the Convenience and Mythical Motors rounded the week out properly. What was your fave?
We covered a shit load of great music last week, and as is likely to happen, we’re a bit all over the place, sonically. There’s definitely a fair share of punk-ish stuff like The Golden Toad and Second Act, but some classic pop acts of days of old have returned. I mean, can we give a shout out for Comet Gain and Brideshead both announcing brand new albums? I premiered a brand new track from Gentle Leader XIV, and RayRay continued with our undying love of new Night Beats. Plus, you can’t go wrong with new Austin stuff from French Film (not streaming) and Mobley, so bopping there as well. Just find a favorite, as you’re bound to find something joyful.
While we covered a lot of territory, I’ll admit that there’s definitely a shadow hanging over last week’s jams, namely the much-hyped return of Allo’ Darlin. I also had to go back and make sure I added in that Day Friend to the list, as that’s one of my favorite ATX acts. Plus, the return of ATH faves the High Water Marks makes another weekly highlight, and now that I’m thinking about it…there’s just a ton of rad stuff here. We got other Austin stuff represented with a new single from Thor & Friends, not to mention this really great introduction to the Pennys (which has some ATX connections). Also, some photos of Hey Nothing ran with a show review, so we threw up their latest single too! Stream it all below!
In playing catch-up from Spring Break, we covered quite a bit of new music, though I may have run out of steam at week’s end. Still, we brought you some new music from Austin artists like Sophia Warren, Adrian Quesada, Will Johnson and Day Friend. Unfortunately, the Day Friend was your sneak peek before their show this Friday at 13th Floor, so we’ll include that in next week’s jams. We also got to premiere a brand new Why Bother jam, so be sure to give that one a listen. Some of my personal favorites from the week are down below, like a new Dumb Things single, as well as fresh Pachyman to boot. And as always, the sounds are all over the place, from the folk of Swedes Egentid to the crazy joyousness of Johnny Maraca‘s garage punk! Play it all below!
Sure, we’ve had our eyes on SXSW as of late, but there were so many great songs coming out, we had to hustle to be sure we got to as many as possible. We covered new stuff from the Gotobeds and Reds, Pinks and Purples, plus we got to highlight longtime favorites like The High Water Marks and Exploding Flowers, just to name a few. We had some quick SXSW interviews with Cloth, Snacktime, Last Waltzon, Two Man Giant Squid and Saint Blonde, so all get a little feature loved today, along with the rest of the weekly bangers. I’ll keep this simple. 
As we hope you know, we’ve been throwing an annual Austin SXSW party, highlighting bands with new work out that we’ve adored; we always throw this show with our friends at 101X Homegrown/Side One Track One. Well, since the show is less about us, and more about the music, we’ve created an easy playlist to sample some of the new work by all the artists that are giving up their free time to be part of this yearly celebration.
Even with Presidents Day offering a slow musical roll, we covered a ton of music last week, at least in our brains. There were some standout tunes from the likes of Triathalon, Now and Scrounge…but also got to hear from one of our old favorites, Pia Fraus. We started to dip our toes back into the SXSW scene, with RayRay grabbing an interview from Gold Star. Then we made sure to rep our friends in Keeled Scales, who had a big week with new Will Johnson and Emily Hines. You’ll get to hear some off the beaten path post-punk from Private Lives and Low Monroe. Speaking of the Low Monroe tune, it’s strange that the two longest tracks on the playlist are both Aussies (the other from Tropical Fuck Storm), and they’re both labeled to have an identical running time.
